HawkFrost   History

Leopardstar announces at a Gathering that Hawkpaw and his sister, Mothpaw, have become warriors in RiverClan, with the names Hawkfrost and Mothwing. His former mentor was Leopardstar. When some warriors from other Clans protest, Leopardstar tells the story of how the rogue, Sasha, stayed in RiverClan with her kits, Hawkpaw and Mothpaw there. Later, she does not think the life of a Clan cat suits her, so she leaves, but her kits prefer to stay with RiverClan and receive their Clan names. She says that they will not be disloyal just because they are rogues, seeing as many of ShadowClan's warriors were once rogues, and ThunderClan is now led by a former kittypet. After the Gathering, Firestar approaches Hawkfrost to tell him that the fuss about his heritage will be over soon, and Hawkfrost replies that he will work hard to defend his Clan.
Hawkfrost is seen on a patrol with Mistyfoot watchingWindClan drink from the river, to make sure that they don't steal prey. Hawkfrost says something urgently to Mistyfoot, but she shakes her head to whatever it is. The RiverClan patrol greets a ThunderClan patrol consisting of Leafpaw and Sorreltail, and Hawkfrost greets them politely. Leafpaw thinks that Hawkfrost reminds her of someone else she knows, but can't think of who. Mistyfoot asks if they have seen any sign of Stormfur and Feathertail, who have gone missing, and she is shocked to learn that ThunderClan is missing cats too, Brambleclaw and Squirrelpaw. Hawkfrost suggests that they ask other Clans if they are missing cats as well. The subject soon turns to the fact that WindClan has continued drinking from the river even though the drought on their territory is over, and Hawkfrost ferociously says that they should be driven off, but Mistyfoot tells him that Leopardstar has forbidden hostile actions and she will keep her word even if Tallstar doesn't. Hawkfrost concedes to her logic, but still seems angry.
At a later Gathering, Hawkfrost asks Leopardstar if he may speak. He says that he saw WindClan warriors stealing fish from the river when they were only supposed to be taking water. He claims to be alone at the time, so no other warrior could verify his words. Tallstar is indignant that his Clan is accused of stealing, but Leopardstar grows angry when he accuses Hawkfrost of lying.
As clouds start to cover the moon, some warriors try to calm the commotion; Firestar asks Hawkfrost if he might have been mistaken and Hawkfrost admits that he could have been dazzled by the sunlight on the water, though he still thinks he saw what he saw.

MoonriseEdit

Leafpaw sees Hawkfrost at the head of a RiverClan patrol after leaving RiverClan territory. He stops to talk with his sister, Mothwing, who is near the border, but never once glances towards the ThunderClan border. Leafpaw looks at his massive shoulders and strong muscles and is glad that he had not caught her trespassing. She thinks to herself that he keeps strictly to the warrior code, and is unlikely to listen to her explanation. She once again, feels as if he reminds her of some other cat, but is unable to think of whom it might be.
Later, when Mothwing lets Leafpaw eat a RiverClan fish, they both scent Hawkfrost at the same moment. Mothwing immediately pushes the ThunderClan apprentice into a hiding spot, and confronts her brother. Hawkfrost stops to talk with Mothwing, and Leafpaw hears him talk about keeping an eye on WindClan. Heknows they are stealing fish, and one day he would catch them at it. Mothwing points out that WindClan would be more likely to fish near Fourtrees, if they were fishing at all, but Hawkfrost insists that they're guilty. He then comments that he can smell fresh ThunderClan scent, causing Leafpaw to shiver. Mothwing points out that it would be odd if he didn't scent ThunderClan, since the border was so close by. Hawkfrost grunts, and then says that something wasn't right in the forest. He says cats have gone missing from the Clans, besides Stormfur and Feathertail. He has no idea what was going on, but plans to find out. Mothwing reminds him that nothing was wrong in RiverClan, so he shouldn't care. But he tells her to not be so mouse-brained and reminds her that this was a chance to make RiverClan great. If the other Clans are weak, they could take over the whole forest. Mothwing is disgusted, and asks him who he thinks he is and compared him to Tigerstar. Hawkfrost then says, "There are worse cats to imitate." Mothwing reminds Hawkfrost of Tigerstar's fate, but Hawkfrost insists that he has learned from his father's mistakes. Sasha had told them enough about Tigerstar; he broke the warrior code, and he deserved to fail. Hawkfrost then insists that he can smell fresh ThunderClan scent. He mutters to himself that he would claw up any warrior that dared stray across the border. Mothwing, in order to save Leafpaw, insists that he's right, and leads him away from her friend's hiding place. Leafpaw acts upon the opportunity and races towards the border.
As she turns back, she sees Hawkfrost investigating her hiding place, growling. Once again, she feels as if he reminds her of some other cat, but can't figure out whom.

DawnEdit

When Leafpaw and Sasha are trapped in Twoleg cages, Leafpaw tells her that she knew Mothwing. Sasha asks if she knew Hawkfrost as well, sounding as worried as a Clan queen would be about her own kits. Leafpaw, who is uneasy speaking about the tabby warrior, tells Sasha that he had been fine the last time she had seen him, and Sasha lets out a sigh of relief.
Hawkfrost is seen when the Clan leaders and warriors gather at Fourtrees to witness its destruction and wait for the "dying warrior" sign from StarClan. It is revealed that Hawkfrost is RiverClan's deputy now, as Mistyfoot was captured by the Twolegs. He says that the other Clans should leave the forest to avoid starvation, but RiverClan will stay as they are safe from Twolegs and have enough food. Brambleclaw suspects him of wanting to take over the territory of other Clans. When Mistyfoot is freed and returns to the Clan, Hawkfrost loses his position as a deputy.
When Firestar's patrol finds Sasha on ThunderClan territory and chases her out, they are confronted by Hawkfrost. Sasha reveals that Tigerstar is the father of Hawkfrost and Mothwing, and Firestar, Brambleclaw and Squirrelpaw are shocked on hearing this. They later discuss about him and some cats fear that Hawkfrost will share his father's ambitions of taking over the forest, but Firestar says he is no threat to them. However, Squirrelpaw is still suspicious of the RiverClan cat.
When Leafpaw visits the RiverClan camp, Hawkfrost appears and says that Tigerstar's fault was being loyal only to himself, while he is loyal to the Clan and lives by the warrior code. He says that he will be the most powerful cat in RiverClan, and all cats will respect him. Leafpaw is taken aback by his arrogance, and decides that he cannot be trusted.
As all four Clans finally prepare to leave the forest, Sasha asks Hawkfrost and Mothwing to stay in the forest with her. Hawkfrost declines, most likely because he plans to become leader of his Clan later, but he doesn't exactly make that clear. The two siblings say goodbye to their mother for the last time, and it is revealed to all cats that Tigerstar is their father. Some cats are frightened, but Leopardstar says they are loyal warriors, and Hawkfrost states he would never desert his Clan.
During the journey, Brambleclaw, Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw hunt in the moorland and Hawkfrost comments on their poor hunting skills. They are suddenly attacked by dogs, and Hawkfrost helps Brambleclaw drive the creatures away.
Hawkfrost is seen in the Tribe Of Rushing Water's camp, looking relaxed as he watched Mothwing groom Morningflower's pelt for fleas.

StarlightEdit

Hawkfrost's ambitions continue to grow. He argues several times with Mistyfoot, still jealous of her. Even so, the other RiverClan warriors trust and respect him, and he continues to have several supporters who still believe he should have stayed deputy when Mistyfoot returned.
When Brambleclaw, Squirrelflight and the others return to the temporary camp after their mission to discoverthe lake, he is friendly toward Brambleclaw, and thanks him for going with the patrol. Squirrelflight, however, is still suspicious of him because she knew Leafpaw didn't trust him, and has an argument with Brambleclaw over him. This later leads to the end of their relationship.
Hawkfrost takes a patrol to explore the island in the lake, and suggests that RiverClan should use it as a camp, as it can be defended easily. Mistyfoot disagrees because she had found a good camp for them already. Hawkfrost argues with her and openly challenges her authority. In the end, Leopardstar decides that they won't set up their camp on the island and they would live in the territory Mistyfoot found.
It is later mentioned, after the Clans have settled into their new territory, that Hawkfrost and Blackclaw drove abadger from their territory.
Soon after, Tigerstar begins to visit Hawkfrost and Brambleclaw in their dreams. The two brothers start to meet in the waking world as well, and they develop a close friendship. As Firestar is still refusing to appoint a new deputy in the hope that Graystripe would return, Hawkfrost suggests Brambleclaw try to impress Firestar and show him that he should be deputy. He also urges his brother to convince Firestar Graystripe was not returning, so he would have to name a new deputy.
When there is a dispute about who should be next WindClan leader after the death of Tallstar, Hawkfrost sides with Mudclaw, and helps him lead a revolt against Onewhisker by leading some RiverClan and ShadowClan cats to help him in battle. During the fight, ThunderClan gets involved; on the shore across from the island, Mudclaw attempts to kill Brambleclaw, but Hawkfrost saves him. Mudclaw continues to tell Brambleclaw that Hawkfrost had promised to help him fight against Onewhisker if, once Mudclaw was leader, he made Hawkfrost deputy of WindClan. Later, they planned to take over RiverClan. Hawkfrost denies this, and Brambleclaw believes him. Lightning strikes a tree and it falls on Mudclaw, killing him instantly, and creates a bridge to the island. Hawkfrost accepts this as a sign from StarClan, and formally apologizes to Onewhisker.

TwilightEdit

Hawkfrost chases away a badger from the RiverClan territory, and when the RiverClan kits stumble upon the toxic Twoleg waste, Hawkfrost helps Blackclaw to build a thorn barrier around it. He thanks Leafpool when she reminds him to wash his paws in a stream. He also notes that the incident with the toxic waste happened because the patrols were not organized properly. Thus, he criticizes Mistyfoot's job as deputy practically to herface, trying to undermine her authority.
Hawkfrost's friendship with his brother Brambleclaw grows, and they meet both in the waking world at Gatherings and in the dreams of the Dark Forest. He promises to follow in his father's pawsteps, and that he will do anything Tigerstar asks to become leader. Squirrelflight and Leafpool still believe that he is untrustworthy, but the other cats do not have any problem with him, and he is seen as an excellent warrior.

SunsetEdit

Hawkfrost learns about the badger attack on ThunderClan when he meets Brambleclaw in the Dark Forest, and he is concerned about his brother. In a dream, Tigerstar offers Brambleclaw advice on becoming deputy, suggesting that he should manipulate Firestar, make a good impression on him, and make friends with Daisy's kits so he can have an apprentice. The three cats practice battle training in the Dark Forest.
Trying to weaken ThunderClan so that his brother could become deputy, Hawkfrost tells ShadowClan about the badger attack, and ShadowClan attacks ThunderClan; however, they are defeated.
Hawkfrost is not pleased when Stormfur returns to RiverClan, as he believes that he has much better chances of becoming a deputy than him. He pressures Mothwing into telling about a fake sign about a stream blocked by two pebbles, interpreting it openly to mean that Stormfur and Brook should be exiled from RiverClan for the good of all. He argues with his sister and it is revealed that it was him placing the moth's wing sign on the night when Mudfur asked for StarClan's guidance in the selection of his future apprentice, and he uses this secret to control his sister. Later, he provokes Stormfur into a fight, thus making Leopardstar exile the other warrior from RiverClan. Brambleclaw sees this as a tactical plan to become the next deputy.
Hawkfrost shows hostility towards Brook when she chases a squirrel over the RiverClan border into ShadowClan territory and reports her to Leopardstar. He explains in full detail Brook's deed, and how she almost got hit by a monster on the thunderpath, maliciously adding a comment about how he wished it hadn't missed her, and reminding the Clan of Mothwing's false sign. Most of the cats seem to agree with Hawkfrost, and Leopardstar is finally convinced to send the Tribe cats on their way, after Hawkfrost provokes Stormfur and he lashes out at him. Hawkfrost believes that he will become deputy then with no competition if Stormfur is exiled. The former Tribe cats have not gone far when they are taken to the ThunderClan camp by Brambleclaw.
When Brambleclaw is finally made deputy, Tigerstar tells his sons that they are destined to rule the forest. He says that Hawkfrost should take over RiverClan and ShadowClan, while his brother will control the other two Clans, and they start making plans about how to do it. Hawkfrost suggests that once they are in charge, they should kill the other two leaders at a Gathering when they are all trapped on the island, and take over their Clans. He also suggests that they should continue the discussion when they are awake, and Brambleclaw agrees to meet him in two days, at sunrise, near the ShadowClan border.
Before they meet, Hawkfrost lures Firestar into a fox trap, so that Brambleclaw can finish him off easily and become leader in his place. However, Brambleclaw chooses to save his leader instead, because of his loyalties to Firestar, and gets him out of the trap. He tells Hawkfrost to go back to RiverClan, saying that he does not want to hurt his brother. Hawkfrost attacks him, but he is killed in the fight, his neck pierced by the stick of the fox trap. Thus, Leafpool's prophecy of "blood will spill blood" is fulfilled because they are half-brothers. The other part of the prophecy, "the lake will run red" is when Hawkfrost's blood spills out into the lake, turning the water red. Before he dies, Hawkfrost promises revenge, and reveals that there is a traitor in ThunderClan who helped him trap Firestar. He then staggers and collapses beside the lake and dies.

In the Power of Three ArcEdit

The SightEdit

It is revealed that most Clan cats do not know how Hawkfrost died; they were only told that he was found dead on ThunderClan territory by a patrol, and his body was taken to RiverClan where his Clanmates mourned him. This contradicts the description in After Sunset: We Need to Talk, where everyone seems to know the circumstances of his death, and that he wanted to kill Firestar.
Hollypaw mentions him when trying to convince Ashfur and Lionpaw that Firestar should make Graystripedeputy again, saying that he was only deputy until Mistyfoot returned.
Hawkfrost appears with Tigerstar when they try to convince Jaypaw to train with them, but Spottedleaf appears and takes him away from them.

Dark RiverEdit

Hawkfrost and Tigerstar are seen to be watching Lionpaw with interest.
He is furious with Lionpaw when he teaches Heatherpaw, the pretty WindClan apprentice he had been meeting with secretly in the tunnels underneath their territories one of the battle moves Tigerstar had taught him, saying that he had just taught an enemy a battle move. When Lionpaw protests that Heatherpaw is not an enemy, he hisses and asks him what he will do if she uses the moves against him one day. Lionpaw says that Heatherpaw will never do that, and says that he thinks Tigerstar and Hawkfrost didn't care about his meetings with Heatherpaw. Hawkfrost growls that they had admired his independence, and had only thought it was a harmless kit-friendship. Hawkfrost tells Lionpaw to take advantage of the tunnels and use it for an attack on WindClan to get more territory. Lionpaw replies that they already had enough territory and prey. Hawkfrost states that WindClan changed since Onestar became leader, and that ThunderClan was terrified of them, since Firestar is too scared to ask them what happened to Hollypaw, making Lionpaw suspicious that Hawkfrost knows something about his sister's disappearance. Before Lionpaw can ask, Hawkfrost disappears.
He and Tigerstar later tell Lionpaw how proud they are for ending Lionpaw's friendship with Heatherpaw.

OutcastEdit

He and Tigerstar continue to train Lionpaw, but he is not seen, nor Tigerstar, in one of Lionpaw's dreams. When Stormfur says Tigerstar's name while talking to Lionpaw, he thinks Stormfur knows about his meetings with Tigerstar and Hawkfrost, but he doesn't. During the battle against the rogue invaders, Lionpaw glimpses Hawkfrost's eyes shining as he fights.

EclipseEdit

He and Tigerstar visit Lionpaw in a dream and Hawkfrost tells him that he needs all the training they can give him. This sparks Lionpaw's annoyance because he thinks he fought well for the Tribe. Lionpaw realizes Hawkfrost and Tigerstar didn't see him in the mountains. Tigerstar orders Lionpaw to attack Hawkfrost and he does so. When Lionpaw tells them about the prophecy, he sneers at him for believing in the prophecy and attacks him, leaving him bleeding when he wakes up. Tigerstar is angry at his sneering even though he does not believe in the prophecy either and refuses to take him to the next training session with Lionpaw. Tigerstar is furious when he finds out that Hawkfrost was right and Lionpaw still believes he has the power of the stars in his paws.

Long ShadowsEdit

Hawkfrost does not make an appearance in this book. However, Ashfur reveals to Squirrelflight, Jayfeather, Hollyleaf, and Lionblaze that he was the one who had helped Hawkfrost from within ThunderClan to lure Firestar into the foxtrap, saying that he wanted for Squirrelflight's father to die so she would feel the same pain he felt when she chose Brambleclaw over him.

In the Omen of the Stars Arc Edit

The Fourth ApprenticeEdit

Hawkfrost, Tigerstar, and Brokenstar are seen looming over Poppyfrost's newborn kits, Cherrykit and Molekit. After this, Jayfeather and Lionblaze suspect that there will be a war between StarClan and the Dark Forest.

Fading EchoesEdit

In the prologue, Hawkfrost is seen battle training with Breezepelt in the Dark Forest. As the two warriors battle, Hawkfrost manages to pin Breezepelt down with his claws. His opponent's eyes flash with panic as Hawkfrost begins to close his jaws around his throat; he is stopped by Tigerstar, who praises him on his good moves.Darkstripe arrives, remarking that Hawkfrost could match any warrior, and there weren't many cats with such strength and skill. Tigerstar silences him, hissing that Hawkfrost knows his own strengths. Brokenstar comments that while Breezepelt is quick, Hawkfrost is strong, and if their strengths are put together, they will be nearly unbeatable. Hawkfrost greets Brokenstar, baring his teeth, asking if he should take advice from him for not silencing Jayfeather. When Brokenstar responds that he didn't expect StarClan to fight so hard to save him, Hawkfrost says that he should never underestimate his enemy. As he says this, he stretches his forepaw forward, wincing.
When Hawkfrost suggests more training, Tigerstar shakes his head, telling Hawkfrost that he had another task for him. Narrowing his eyes, Hawkfrost asks what it was, and Tigerstar replies that he wanted him to recruit a certain apprentice. Menace edges Hawkfrost's mew as he asks if Tigerstar wanted him to visit her. As Hawkfrost turns away, Tigerstar calls out to him that he should have no trouble as she is ready.
One night, Hawkfrost walks in Ivypaw's dreams, appearing to her in a sunny meadow. She asks him if it is his field, but he says no, and casually offers to show her better hunting techniques. She accepts, and he shows her a few methods. He also asks about her sister, to which Ivypaw replies that Dovepaw is clever and funny. Before Ivypaw leaves, Hawkfrost tells her his name. She tells him hers, shortly before she departs.
When Ivypaw is assigned to help Blossompaw with her assessment and Blossompaw complains that Ivypaw is not a good hunter, Ivypaw hears Hawkfrost whisper in her ear that she is just as good a hunter as Dovepaw. She also feels him guiding her in the hunting move he showed her.
He continues to meet with Ivypaw in her dreams, showing her more battle and hunting moves. Ivypaw believes him to be a StarClan cat, and almost tells Dovepaw about his teachings, but she is too busy to listen, so she decides to keep it a secret so she can become as good a hunter as Dovepaw. Hawkfrost assures Ivypaw that she is not merely an echo of her sister, and can surpass Dovepaw if she works hard.
Eventually, Hawkfrost takes Ivypaw to the Dark Forest itself, and introduces her to Tigerstar. She is uneasy at first, but they convince her that they are trustworthy, and she continues her dream training there.
During the battle with ShadowClan, Ivypaw can feel his presence, even though she can't see him.

Night WhispersEdit

When Ivypaw returns to the Dark Forest after the battle with ShadowClan, Hawkfrost tells her that she fought well, but she got the move wrong on Scorchfur, and comments that she should never turn on two legs when she can manage on one. When Mapleshade attacks Ivypaw, Hawkfrost tells Mapleshade to let her go, and Ivypaw informs him that her sister, Dovepaw, knew that she was training in the Dark Forest. After Hawkfrost tells her that he would inform her if she was doing anything wrong, he introduces her to two Dark Forest Clanmates:Shredtail and Sparrowfeather. Afterwards, he supervises the training session with Thistleclaw.
The next time Ivypaw goes to the Dark Forest, she is attacked by Thistleclaw, but she fights him off so nicely that Hawkfrost praised her, and it is mentioned that praise from him is rare. Hawkfrost supervises a water training session, and Darkstripe tells him that he can partner up with his apprentice, since he is supervising.
Ivypaw strays into the Dark Forest, calling for Hawkfrost, after finding out the truth about the Dark Forest: that they aren't trying to help Ivypaw be a better warrior, but wanting to get her support as they try to destroy the Clans. Mapleshade appears, telling Ivypaw that Hawkfrost is busy, and that he wanted Mapleshade to train Ivypaw for the day.

Sign of the MoonEdit

Hawkfrost is seen managing a Place of No Stars battle session. He instructs them to all attack him at once, to show what they should've done. Then Brokenstar introduces Blossomfall to the other Dark Forest trainees, interrupting the session.

The Forgotten WarriorEdit

After Ivypool spies on Tigerheart, Hawkfrost finds her and shoos her away for training with the other apprentices.
When Ivypool requests to become a warrior for the Dark Forest, Hawkfrost is impressed with her bold request and replies that he knew she was special.
After Ivypool killed Antpelt's spirit to become a Dark Forest warrior, Hawkfrost tells her that he is glad that she became his apprentice, and that he is proud of her. Ivypool also notes that she sees a glint of fear in his eyes as they walk away. He also reminds her to train the apprentices before he leaves her.

The Last HopeEdit

He is seen training the apprentices at the beginning of the book. Hawkfrost snarls at Ivypool when she cautions Birchfall and Redwillow to be careful while training. Curling his lip and staring at Ivypool, he says that there was a war coming and it wouldn't be won with sheathed claws. Hawkfrost tells Ivypool that he thought that she was training the Dark Forest apprentices to be real warriors, not soft Clan cats. Birchfall bristles and says that Clan cats weren't soft, causing Hawkfrost to challenge him, asking why he was in the Dark Forest. When Redwillow tells him that the Clans needed them to be the best warriors, Hawkfrost nods slowly and adds that he could learn the skills only at the Dark Forest.
Flicking his nose toward Birchfall, Hawkfrost instructs him to attack Redwillow once more and to not stop at the first scent of blood. While he says this, he narrows his eyes at Ivypool. After Ivypool attacks Redwillow, she glances at Hawkfrost, whose eyes were glittering with approval.
During a meeting in the Dark Forest, Brokenstar kills Beetlewhisker. Afterwards Ivypool watches Hawkfrost walk up to Beetlewhisker's body and kick it viciously, commenting that he never trusted him. In the battle between the Dark Forest and the Clans, Tigerheart whispers something to Hawkfrost. Then Thistleclaw tells Ivypool to meet Hawkfrost on the far side of WindClan's camp. When Ivypool admits that she fights for the Clans, Snowtuft, Hawkfrost, and Thistleclaw attack her and drive her into the Dark Forest. Hollyleaf joins the fight while Tigerheart helps Ivypool, only to die of the wounds Hawkfrost gave her when she was brought back to ThunderClan camp.
After the final battle at ThunderClan's camp winds down, Hawkfrost tries to escape with his Dark Forest Clanmates, but Brambleclaw stops him. Ivypool attacks him furiously, aiming to avenge Hollyleaf's death, but Hawkfrost fights back fiercely and almost kills Ivypool. Brambleclaw kills Hawkfrost before he can do so, though, and his spirit fades permanently.

In the Field Guide Arc Edit

Cats of the ClansEdit

In this guide, Rock says that even before he knew who his father was, Hawkfrost wanted to take Leopardstar's place. It is said that Hawkfrost is clever enough to know that even though he is Leopardstar's favorite, it did not make him respected by his Clanmates.
Hawkfrost even tore off a moth's wing to convince Mudfur to take his sister, Mothwing as his medicine cat apprentice.

Battles of the ClansEdit

Hawkfrost does not appear in the book, but Tawnypelt mentions him when she is giving the reader a tour around the lake territories. She tells how he aided Mudclaw in his rebellion against Onewhisker when in WindClan territory. While crossing ThunderClan, she stops by the lake and tells how Hawkfrost died at the paws of Brambleclaw when he had tried to kill Firestar. She also states that so much blood flowed from Hawkfrost, it turned the lake red. This is a mistake, only Brambleclaw, Firestar, and Leafpool know what happened.

In the Tigerstar and Sasha ArcEdit

Return to the ClansEdit

Hawk is seen on the front cover playing with his siblings Moth and Tadpole. The three kits go off to find Kenwhile their mother, Sasha, is off to hunt. They climb into a abandoned Twoleg Nest. It starts filling up with water and Tadpole is able to open a window, but slips and drowns in the flood. Hawk then keeps yelling for his dead brother, and when he finds out Tadpole had died in the flood he lets out a yowl of grief.
Moth, Hawk and Sasha go to a barn which Pine suggests, but they are attacked by the cats living there, Hawk's ear getting cut in the process. Quickly, they leave for RiverClan, and Sasha leaves her kits there, but decides Clan life isn't for her.

In the Short Stories and PlaysEdit

After Sunset: The Right Choice?Edit

Hawkfrost doesn't personally appear, he is mentioned often. Leafpool remembers the prophecy she was given when the Clans arrived at the lake, and how it was fulfilled when Brambleclaw killed Hawkfrost, making the lake run red with his blood, while defending Firestar.
She finds Brambleclaw sitting on the shore, staring out at the lake. Leafpool asks him if he was thinking about Hawkfrost, to which he replies that he was.

TriviaEdit

  • He has been mistakenly described as black.[28]
  • He has been mentioned with both amber eyes[29] and dark blue eyes.[30]
  • He has SkyClan blood, because his great aunt, Spottedleaf, is descended from Spottedpelt and because his father, Tigerstar, is descended from Gorseclaw.[31]
  • He has ThunderClan blood, because his father, Tigerstar, was born in ThunderClan.[32]
  • He has kittypet blood, because his mother, Sasha, was formerly a kittypet.[33]
  • In The Sight, he is mistakenly referred to as being RiverClan deputy when he died, even though Mistyfoot had taken back her position long before that. [34]
  • In Cats of the Clans, it is mentioned Hawkfrost wanted to take over the Clans even before he knew who his father was. This is false, as in Return to the Clans, Sasha told Hawkfrost and Mothwing who their father was before they joined RiverClan.[35]
  • He was called a gray tom in The Last Hope. [5]

                             MothWing History

Mothwing and her brother, Hawkfrost, are announced at aGathering by Leopardstar as a newly appointed warriorand medicine cat apprentice. Everyone cheers for them, but some cats' uneasiness is sensed by Leafpaw. To calm the tension, Leopardstar proceeds to tell the warriors of the Gathering the truth about the two warriors in order to prevent rumors from spreading. She explains how six moons prior to this Gathering, a rogue named Sashacame to RiverClan with her two surviving kits, seeking help from the Clan. She was weakened by the birth of her kits and requested care for her kits and help with hunting. RiverClan was more than willing to accept her as a warrior, but Sasha left, and her kits Hawkpaw and Mothpaw chose to stay.
After recollecting the story, the other Clans are shocked and outraged that a Clan has taken in a few rogues, but Leopardstar reminds ShadowClan that several of their Clanmates were once rogues themselves, andThunderClan's leader, Firestar, was once a kittypet. Leopardstar then moves on to announce that Mothwing wishes to follow the path of a medicine cat instead, and has become Mudfur's apprentice, to the other Clans' outrage. As the noise dies down, Mudfur expresses his confidence in his new apprentice, remarking on her talent, but intends to wait for a sign from StarClan. Once the sign is sent, Mudfur will take her to Mothermouth for the official medicine cat apprentice ceremony. After the Gathering, the mood appears to be good-humored despite the fuss over Hawkfrost and Mothwing.
At the half moon, Leafpaw and Cinderpelt meet up withLittlecloud and the RiverClan medicine cats. Leafpaw starts talking to Mothwing, but Mothwing looks at Leafpaw sourly, as if she is inferior to her. Mothwing apologizes to Leafpaw for her hostile looks; she explains that for a while, there was no sign telling Mudfur Mothwing the right choice for a medicine cat. Mothwing thought that meant that StarClan had rejected her. Mudfur had told her to be patient, and Hawkfrost told her that she did not have to prove her loyalty to anyone but StarClan. He was right, for two dawns later, Mudfur found a moth's wing outside his den, and he interprets it as an omen that Mothwing was to be the next medicine cat apprentice. She is now making the journey with the other medicine cats to become formally accepted as a medicine cat.
After talking, Mothwing becomes more friendly with Leafpaw and as time progresses, they develop a friendship. Once the medicine cats are settled by the Moonstone, Mudfur presents her to StarClan and the medicine cats start to share dreams with StarClan. The cats wake up and leave the Moonstone. Once outside of Mothermouth, Mothwing expresses her excitement to Leafpaw about the ceremony.
At the next Gathering, Leafpaw and Mothwing meet each other. Mothwing seems to be troubled about something, but before she can explain to Leafpaw, the leaders begin the Gathering. During the Gathering, Hawkfrost accuses WindClan of stealing prey. Mothwing immediately defends her brother's claims, but is silenced by Mudfur. She casts her mentor an angry and ashamed glance. The Clans then discuss how at least one cat from every Clan left for unknown reasons. Mothwing yowls in question at the meaning of their disappearance and why StarClan has not shown anything to her. After the Clan leaders dismiss the Gathering, Mothwing says good-bye to Leafpaw.

Moonrise Edit

When Leafpaw and Sorreltail are chased by a WindClan patrol, they cross into RiverClan territory and are rescued by Mothwing, who chases off the WindClan warriors. Leafpaw tells Sorreltail that Mothwing used to be a warrior apprentice before choosing the path of a medicine cat. Mothwing tells them to rest, and brings themherbs. While she is away, Sorreltail remarks that Mothwing should be more loyal to her Clan, such as chasing away intruders instead of welcoming and helping them, and suggests that she does not understand the warrior code because her mother was a rogue. Leafpaw defends Mothwing, saying she is a loyal Clan cat. Mothwing returns, bringing medicine, and listens to their story about their encounter with the WindClan patrol, and aboutMonsters destroying the forest. She says that RiverClan is safe from Twolegs.
A couple of days later, Mothwing offers to teach Leafpaw how to fish in the river, as ThunderClan starts running short on prey as the forest is being destroyed. Leafpaw notes Mothwing's ignorance of the warrior code, as Clans are not supposed to take prey from one another. Hawkfrost suddenly appears, and Mothwing pushes Leafpaw into the river to hide her, almost drowning her. Hawkfrost says that RiverClan should take the other Clans' territories and rule the forest, but Mothwing protests, and is worried by her brother's ambitions. She then lures Hawkfrost away from the place where Leafpaw is hiding. Later, Leafpaw admits to Firestar that Mothwing was teaching her how to fish.
At the half-moon, when medicine cats visit the Moonstone, Mothwing and Mudfur appear sleek and well-fed, unlike the cats from the other Clans. She says she is progressing well with her medicine cat studies, and has learned about remedies for coughs. Leafpaw is delighted as she knew how insecure Mothwing felt about her position, and desperate to prove that she could be a good medicine cat. While crossing the WindClan ground, Mothwing notices some dead rabbits, and Barkface explains they have been poisoned by Twolegs.
When Reedpaw falls into the river and almost drowns, Mothwing is in panic and shock, and has no idea what to do. Fortunately, Leafpaw is there as well, and, with Spottedleaf's help, tends to the apprentice. Hawkfrost tells Mothwing off for being useless. Mothwing is embarrassed and desperate, believing that she has lost the respect of her Clan. Leafpaw tries in vain to cheer her up, and Mothwing walks away.
Mothwing saves Leafpaw and Sorreltail once again when they cross the RiverClan border, driven by hunger, and are caught by Hawkfrost. Mothwing tells her brother that taking the ThunderClan cats to Leopardstar to punish them could mean a war between the Clans, which they want to avoid. She suggests another way to take over ThunderClan, profiting of the Twoleg devastation, and Hawkfrost finally lets the two cats go. Leafpaw feels betrayed, but Mothwing explains that she was just trying to save Sorreltail, and they are still friends.

Dawn Edit

Mothwing comes to ThunderClan camp, seeking help from Leafpaw; Mudfur was very ill and she needed help. Leafpaw tells Firestar and her mentor, Cinderpelt, and Cinderpelt volunteers to assist her. Mothwing leads the two to Mudfur, who lays dying in his den. Mothwing tells Cinderpelt what she has treated him with, and Cinderpelt tells her that Mothwing has done everything right, and there is nothing else they can do. Mothwing can not stand to see her mentor suffer, and asks Cinderpelt to do something. Cinderpelt gives him poppy seeds and marigold to ease his suffering before StarClan takes him. Mothwing and Leafpaw leave Mudfur with Cinderpelt and exit into the camp. Mothwing reports Mudfur's condition to Leopardstar. Leafpaw reassures Mothwing that she is a great medicine cat, and Cinderpelt would have done nothing different from what Mothwing did to treat Mudfur. Hawkfrost assures Mothwing that the two of them will gain respect one day.
Some time later, on the day of the journey, Stormfur delivers a message from RiverClan camp. His Clan has realized that they couldn't leave, for Mudfur is about to die. Frostfur and Speckletail are staying behind in the forest, and they offer to watch over him. Stormfur takes Firestar, Cinderpelt, Leafpaw, Runningnose, and the two ThunderClan warriors to RiverClan camp. Firestar offers the plan to Leopardstar, but she declines, since Mudfur is almost dead. Cinderpelt, Leafpaw, and Runningnose enter the medicine cat's den, and see Mothwing with her mentor. She tells Cinderpelt that she has made sure that he is not in any pain and there is nothing more anyone can do for him. As Mudfur takes his last breath, Mothwing cries in grief, not knowing how she can manage without her beloved mentor, and leaves for her Clan with the news.
Once RiverClan is ready to go, the cats return to ShadowClan and the rest of ThunderClan. It's not long after they arrive that Sasha shows herself. Mothwing and Hawkfrost bound over to her in excitement. Sasha tells the cats that she has seen what has happened to their homes, and wants Hawkfrost and Mothwing to leave the danger and come to live with her. Firestar says that the decision is theirs but he wants them to stay because their father was a great warrior, and all four of his children have inherited his courage. RiverClan, who just learned of their parentage, admit that, regardless, none of them have doubted either of their loyalty before. Hawkfrost and Mothwing gently decline Sasha's offer, since their loyalties are tied to their Clan. Sasha wishes her kits well, and leaves to never see them again.
When the Clans take shelter from the Tribe of Rushing Water, she is seen tending to Morningflower and checking to make sure that the weak and the cold are tended to.

Starlight Edit

Mothwing is seen walking beside apprentices from all four Clans when they arrive at the lake for the first time.
She later talks to Leafpaw and confesses that she feels helpless because she has no supplies and so many cats are tired and weak. Leafpaw reassures Mothwing that she will be fine. Mothwing speaks with the other medicine cats when they discuss where they would find a new place to share tongues with StarClan. Mothwing mentions that it shouldn't matter, so long as they can find herbs and heal their Clanmates. The other medicine cats look at her in astonishment and Leafpaw covers up Mothwing's mistake. Mothwing goes with the other medicine cats down to a boggy area near the lake to collect herbs. While there, Mothwing notices an island in the lake and offers to swim out to it. The other medicine cats agree, and she does; after she comes back, she tells them all about the layout of the island. Mothwing seems convinced that the Clans could use it for Gatherings, but the others say not all cats would be able to swim out to it as she had, especially elders.
When Firestar calls a meeting of all the Clans to discuss where to meet for the next Gathering, Mothwing explains to the Clans the island that she had found, and again brings up the idea of using it for Gatherings. Many cats complain about having to swim over. Hawkfrost speaks up, saying that if it wasn't going to be used for Gatherings, it could be RiverClan's camp.
Before the Clans separate, Leafpaw meets up with Mothwing once more and Mothwing offers to give some water to Leafpaw for ThunderClan's elders. Leafpaw is alarmed when she find a strong scent on the water-soaked moss and Mothwing explains that she got the water from a pool nearby. Mothwing takes Leafpaw to the pool and they are surprised to see a dead rabbit at the bottom of it. Mothwing says that she didn't see it there earlier and hopes that the elders will be alright; Leafpaw tells her that they will, though she is still worried. In ThunderClan's camp, Mousefur and Goldenflower become sick from the tainted water. Leafpaw murmurs that Mothwing meant well and Cinderpelt understands that it was a mistake.
Near the end of the first Gathering by the lake, the medicine cats have a meeting and Mothwing apologizes for not checking the water before giving it to the elders. They all share concern that their elders have been sick and Mothwing shares a glance with Leafpaw. The medicine cats separate and Mothwing thanks Leafpaw for not telling them about the tainted water. Mothwing then reveals to Leafpaw that she doesn't believe in StarClan and thinks that they are a bunch of stories to keep the Clans happy. Leafpaw is shocked by this, and reminds her friend that the moth's wing sign must have been real. Fear flashes in Mothwing's eyes, and she is about to say something, but Cinderpelt cuts her off and takes Leafpaw with her.
The medicine cats gather for the first time at the Moonpool and Mothwing seems eager to arrive there. Mothwing cheers for Leafpool, eyes shining, after she receives her medicine cat name.

Twilight Edit

Leafpool meets Feathertail in a dream, and she asks Leafpool to send a message on to Mothwing. Leafpool recalls how Mothwing had revealed her lack of faith in StarClan. Leafpool tells Feathertail that Mothwing is good with the healing herbs and that she wanted to believe in StarClan when she was an apprentice. Leafpool then asks if Mudfur's moth's-wing sign wasn't true, and Feathertail replies that she can't expect to understand signs that were given to another cat. Feathertail then tells Leafpool that the message is urgent; RiverClan is in serious danger from Twolegs. Leafpool promises to tell Mothwing and Feathertail then fades away.
Mothwing is visited by Leafpool, who was found on RiverClan territory by Mistyfoot. She is pleasantly surprised to see Leafpool. Mothwing is told about the message from Feathertail and Mothwing thinks about the message thoughtfully. She then tells Leafpool that the small Thunderpath nearby has been quiet, so they should go check it out. Leafpool agrees and while they are walking out to the Thunderpath, Leafpool asks Mothwing if she is starting to believe in StarClan now because of Feathertail's message. Mothwing tells her she still doesn't believe in StarClan and Leafpool shows confusion because Mothwing took notice of Feathertail's warning. Mothwing says that she trusts Leafpool, and soon they reach the Thunderpath. The two of them are revolted by the stench of monsters on the Thunderpath and ShadowClan's smell from across the border. They can't sense any danger around so they head back to the camp. Mothwing offers to let Leafpool stay in the camp for the night since it's getting dark, and she accepts.
At the half-moon, Mothwing arrives late to the Moonpool and apologizes for being late. After Leafpool wakes up from her dream, she wakes up Mothwing, who is having a nap, and Mothwing complains because she was having a good sleep. Leafpool tells her it's so the other medicine cats don't catch her sleeping. All of the medicine cats discuss the dream that they had and Mothwing mentions that StarClan must be warning them about something ahead. As the medicine cats walk down from the Moonpool, Leafpool asks Mothwing if she told Leopardstar about her dream and Mothwing says she has never told Leopardstar about a dream before. She says that she doesn't have prophetic dreams and she never will. The two of them talk until they reach the WindClan border and Crowfeather then emerges out of the bushes, asking to talk to Leafpool. Mothwing nods and leaves.
Mothwing calls Leafpool out to RiverClan to help with many sick cats. Mothwing panics because all her Clanmates were dying. Mothwing shows her the cats that are sick and she blames herself. Leafpool reassures her that it isn't her fault and then helps her with the sick cats by giving them yarrow and juniper berries. Mistyfoot takes Leafpool to see a Twoleg thing with ooze coming out of it. They all know this must be the thing making the cats sick. They later go back to the camp and Mothwing learns what they found. Mothwing is then called over by Willowkit and she introduces the kit to Leafpool. Mothwing treats more of the sick cats and the next morning Leafpool leaves to go back to ThunderClan.

Sunset Edit

Leafpool speaks to Mudfur in a dream and he tells her that a RiverClan elder is suffering from greencough but Mothwing can't find any catmint to cure him. Mudfur questions if his choice to make Mothwing his apprentice was right and he recalls the moth's wing sign that he received. Mudfur then asks Leafpool to tell Mothwing about the catmint that grows at the edge of RiverClan territory. Leafpool decides against going immediately, because she had to take care of Berrykit, and waits until the next trip to the Moonpool.
The medicine cats gather at the path to the Moonpool but Mothwing hadn't shown up yet. Leafpool wonders if Mothwing had to stay to take care of the elder with greencough. She hopes to see Mothwing when they get to the Moonpool but Mothwing isn't there.
At the Gathering at the island, Leopardstar announces Willowpaw as Mothwing's apprentice and Mothwing is seen sitting next to Willowpaw. Leopardstar also mentions that an elder, Heavystep, has died from sickness and Leafpool realizes this must be the elder Mudfur was talking about.
After Leopardstar finishes speaking, Hawkfrost cuts across Onestar as the WindClan leader begins his report. He tells the Clans that Mothwing has important news for them. Leopardstar allows Mothwing to speak, although she hadn't been expecting anything to happen. Mothwing rises to her paws but doesn't say anything so Hawkfrost reminds her that it was about a sign. Mothwing, sounding confused, says that she had a dream. Leopardstar is unhappy that Mothwing didn't ask her first before telling it at the Gathering. Hawkfrost pushes Mothwing to go on and she stammers that she may have been mistaken about the dream. Hawkfrost and Leopardstar tell her to explain the dream anyway and Mothwing continues nervously. Leafpool is seen by her sister, Squirrelflight, watching Mothwing with dismay in her eyes.
Mothwing says she dreamed she was fishing in the stream and two pebbles didn't belong in the stream, making it flow unevenly. The pebbles then washed away and the stream flowed normally again. The cats from all Clans are confused and Leafpool is clearly upset. Leopardstar demands to know what the dream means, and Hawkfrost jumps up before Mothwing can speak. He says that there obviously must be two things in RiverClan that don't belong and that they should leave. Voletooth speaks up and says that the two pebbles might be Stormfur and Brook. Hawkfrost growls that StarClan would be angry if they let Stormfur and Brook stay in RiverClan. Mothwing begs him to stop, and says that she doesn't know exactly what her dream means and that she should wait for another. Hawkfrost glares at her and Leopardstar says that they won't do anything until Mothwing knows more. Mothwing then sits down and the Gathering continues.
After the Gathering, Leafpool tries to speak to Mothwing but Hawkfrost gets to her first. He snarls at her that she was an idiot for almost ruining everything. Mothwing tells Willowpaw to leave, probably because she was worried that Hawkfrost would attack her. Willowpaw scampers off and Hawkfrost continues to shout at his sister. He tells Mothwing that she let him down and that no one will believe her anymore because she was so uncertain. She and Hawkfrost argue for some time and Leafpool tenses herself in case she has to jump to Mothwing's defense. Mothwing obviously feels terrible for lying to every Clan about her dream. Hawkfrost mentions again that Stormfur should leave and that he will be able to become deputy after that. Mothwing defends Stormfur, and Hawkfrost bares his teeth, saying he was the one who helped Mothwing become a medicine cat, then threatens to expose her secret to the Clan. Mothwing looks him squarely in the eyes and replies that she has served her Clan as best as she can, and that if he exposes the truth, he won't look good either. Hawkfrost then pads off and Mothwing slumps down underneath a tree as if all her strength was gone.
Later, after Brook chases a squirrel into ShadowClan territory, Hawkfrost reports back to Leopardstar, demanding that she be punished or exiled. He then brings up the subject of Mothwing's feigned sign from StarClan, which makes up Leopardstar's mind to relegate the former Tribe cats from RiverClan.
Leafpool then speaks to Mothwing, saying she is sorry about Heavystep's death and reveals to Mothwing that she didn't tell her about Mudfur's message in her dream. The two of them discuss Leafpool's dreams for a little while. Then Leopardstar calls Mothwing over to leave for the RiverClan camp. Mothwing walks off with Leopardstar as Leafpool calls out to her where the catmint is.
While Leafpool is in the ThunderClan camp, Hazelkit and Mousekit are playing with a dead butterfly and Leafpool thinks she recognizes it. Mousekit interrupts her thoughts by saying a tortoiseshell cat showed it to them. Leafpool knows it must have been Spottedleaf and then knows that Spottedleaf was telling her something. She also realizes that the butterfly's wing could mean a moth's wing. A scene then flashes before Leafpool's eyes; Hawkfrost putting a torn moth's wing in front of Mudfur's den as a false sign from StarClan. Leafpool wonders if Hawkfrost had put it there on purpose. Leafpool thinks about what she has just seen and now knows why Mothwing has no faith in StarClan. Leafpool then decides that Willowpaw would be able to take over RiverClan's connection with StarClan.
When Brambleclaw sees Stormfur, Brook, and Hawkfrost talking angrily to each other near the RiverClan-ShadowClan border, he followed then back to their camp to see what would happen. He watches as Hawkfrost tells Leopardstar about Brook crossing the border then Hawkfrost asks Mothwing if she's had another sign. Mothwing tells Leopardstar that she has not, and that they mustn't be so quick to decide. Blackclaw says that the dream is clear to him and that they should get rid of Stormfur and Brook. Leopardstar decides to make Stormfur and Brook leave after Stormfur attacks Blackclaw out of outrage.
At the next medicine cat meeting, she presents Willowpaw to StarClan and the other medicine cats accept Willowpaw as Mothwing's new apprentice. Leafpool wakes up from her dream and Mothwing is also awake so they talk. Mothwing tells Leafpool that she is worried for Willowpaw since she herself doesn't believe in StarClan. Mothwing then confesses to Leafpool that the moth wing's sign was fake and Leafpool tells her she already knows. Mothwing then mentions that the dream at the Gathering was fake and Hawkfrost was always threatening her to do things. The rest of the medicine cats soon wake up and they all leave.
Hawkfrost is later killed by Brambleclaw, fulfilling Leafpool's prophecy; this means that Mothwing no longer has to live in fear of Hawkfrost, and she can keep her lack of belief in StarClan a secret forever.

In the Power of Three ArcEdit

The Sight Edit

Mothwing and Willowpaw arrive in ThunderClan camp. Willowpaw had received a dream from StarClan, and wanted Leafpool to help her interpret it. Hollykit didn't understand why Mothwing couldn't help her, but Willowpaw explains that Mothwing wanted Leafpool's opinion. Hollykit, as she watches the cat go inside Leafpool's den, decides that the path she wants to follow is that of a medicine cat. When they emerge from the den, Hollykit badgers Willowpaw with questions about what being a medicine cat was like. Before she can complete her answer, Mothwing called to Willowpaw, telling her that they are leaving. The two cats return to RiverClan camp, unaware that they have inspired Hollykit to become a medicine cat.
Willowpaw sees Hollypaw at the Gathering, congratulating Hollypaw for her new apprenticeship to Leafpool. Willowpaw informs Hollypaw that Mothwing told her of Hollypaw's new position.
Jaypaw is visited by Tigerstar and Hawkfrost. The two warriors want to train Jaypaw to become a warrior. When Jaypaw shows uncertainty at becoming a warrior, Tigerstar expresses his annoyance at having to watch both Jaypaw and Mothwing, his own kin, waste their talents on medicine.
At the half-moon meeting of the medicine cats, Jaypaw scents Mothwing and Willowpaw's odor from their visit a moon ago. Mothwing and Willowpaw actually do arrive, Leafpool asks if RiverClan is well. Mothwing reports the elders are driven to their den due to the cold, but they have plenty of medicine are getting alone alright. Inside the Moonpool itself, Jaypaw wanders into Willowpaw's dream. Mudfur is seen delivering a message to Willowpaw to tell Mothwing to beware of the Twoleg kits that are attempting to block the river that feeds the Clan. Jaypaw is confused at why Mothwing isn't the one being told the information. Jaypaw wanders into Mothwing's dream, and discovers she is having a dream of a normal warrior. Jaypaw returns to his own dream and Yellowfang visits him. Wanting to solve the mystery of Mothwing, Jaypaw asks if Yellowfang has ever spoken to him. She doesn't reply and instead scolds his curiosity. Before he can discover the truth, he is woken up by Leafpool. Mothwing wakes up, as though she had a good rest and gestures to Willowpaw not to hang around because of the cold. Mothwing, as they leave, inquires about the status of Jaypaw's training. Jaypaw, still determined to crack the case on Mothwing, says his training is going good, and says that the best part is sharing dreams with StarClan. She quickly changes the subject at his response and asks him about his cases. He tells her about Stormfur, and how he can't get the medicine to stay on without it rubbing off. Mothwing suggests covering the wound with catchweed after applying the poultice. Jaypaw thanks her for the advice and slyly asks her if StarClan gives her advice. She doesn't appear to hear and instead speeds up to catch up with Willowpaw. Mothwing, upon exiting the Moonpool cavern, bids the other medicine cats farewell.
Weaselfur and Kestrelpaw of WindClan arrive at ThunderClan, requesting catmint for greencough. Leafpool has none either, and, after some persuasion from Jaypaw, leaves to go ask Mothwing for some. Mothwing agrees, evident by the bundles of catnip Leafpool brings back from her. Mothwing must have much, for she was able to spare much for Leafpool.

Dark RiverEdit

Mothwing is sitting with Leafpool and Barkface at the Gathering. Willowpaw talks to Hollypaw, but cannot stay, because she must join Mothwing soon. She does not show it, but RiverClan is slowly losing their home. Jaypaw suspects that there is something bothering RiverClan, but is unaware of what. At the half-moon meeting, Mothwing chats with Leafpool about Mousefur, and if she has recovered from greencough. Jaypaw attempts to figure out what was wrong with RiverClan. He reads Mothwing's mind, but nothing is shown. It is as though there is a constant shield of blankness that is protecting her mind. When Jaypaw dreams, he journeys into Willowpaw's dream, and discovers that RiverClan is slowly losing their home. He wakes up, and tells Leafpool he has news about RiverClan. Concerned, Leafpool wakes Mothwing up. Willowpaw, once she awakens, gravely tells Mothwing that they must return home at once.
Hollypaw goes to Firestar, wanting to stop a fight between RiverClan and WindClan before it happened. She is concerned that, because of the Twoleg kits in their territory that are blocking the river, RiverClan could move into WindClan territory and a fight would break out. Leafpool tells her that at the Gathering, Mothwing had told her that RiverClan has its problem, but they are addressing it. Aggravated that nothing is being done, she goes to RiverClan herself and looks for Willowpaw on the island where RiverClan is temporarily staying. Mothwing is treating a kit, who keeps stepping on pine needles. Icewing, the kit's mother, explains that the kits keep stepping on the needles. Once the kit is treated, Mothwing accompanies Icewing in sweeping the needles from the nursery entrance. Willowpaw is about to follow, but Hollypaw calls her and they hide in a cave to discuss things. Mothwing catches them, and asks sharply what Hollypaw's buissness is. When Hollypaw justifies herself, Mothwing gives Willowpaw permission to show her the camp, but they must remain out of sight. She explains their plan, which includes making the river wider and deeper by blocking it. Once the river floods, they will set up gorse barriers. They will be unable to reach the island, give up, and play somewhere else. The apprentices get caught, however, and Leopardstar orders her to stay with Mothwing and Willowpaw until it is safe for her to return, but it is mostly because Leopardstar thinks she is a spy.
Jaypaw and Leafpool attend a meeting with WindClan at the request of Firestar. Onestar reports that RiverClan has not invaded their territory yet, but it is still a possibility. Leafpool suggests that Barkface could talk to Mothwing and figure out what is happening at the next half-moon. Instead of doing that, however, Onestar decides to attack, for RiverClan has been found on their territory, and Gorsetail's three kits are missing.

OutcastEdit

At the Moonpool Gathering, Mothwing doesn't show up. Willowpaw explains that she is tending to an infected bee sting, but Jaypaw thinks it is just an excuse not to come to the Moonpool just because she doesn't believe in StarClan.

EclipseEdit

When the medicine cats go to the Moonpool, Mothwing gives her apprentice her full medicine cat name, Willowshine, and is reluctant to do so, since she does not believe in StarClan.

Long ShadowsEdit

Mothwing stays RiverClan's medicine cat. She starts to send Willowshine to the Moonpool by herself, now that she has become a full-fledged medicine cat.

SunriseEdit

Mothwing does not formally appear in Sunrise, but is listed in the allegiances.

In the Omen of the Stars ArcEdit

The Fourth ApprenticeEdit

Mothwing does not formally appear in The Fourth Apprentice, but is listed in the allegiances.
She is presumed to be caring for the sick cat in the RiverClan camp, which is later revealed to be Leopardstar by Dovepaw.

Fading EchoesEdit

Mothwing is with Mistystar in the ThunderClan camp as Mistystar announces that Leopardstar has died. Mothwing informs ThunderClan that they had just come from the Moonpool and Mistystar is now the leader of RiverClan. Mistystar then explains that they lost three of their elders, so Firestar offers some strengthening herbs for them to take back. Mothwing goes to Jayfeather for the herbs and Jayfeather is curious to know how Mothwing had managed Mistystar's ceremony when she didn't believe in StarClan. Jayfeather offers her some ointment for her aching paws but Mothwing politely declines. Mothwing then suggests some herbs that Jayfeather could use for Longtail's stiffness and he is grateful. Jayfeather asks how Mistystar's ceremony went, but Mothwing only replies that it was fine. Jayfeather wants to know more, so he probes her recent memories and watches how the ceremony had played out. He sees Mothwing and Mistystar at the Moonpool and watches as Mothwing shows anxiety. Jayfeather wants Mothwing to accept that StarClan is real and as he watches, he thinks to himself how stubborn Mothwing can be. Mistystar then awakens and turns to Mothwing, very surprised that the medicine cat wasn't at the ceremony. Mothwing then reveals to Mistystar that she doesn't believe in StarClan and Mistystar is shocked, but then accepts Mothwing's beliefs. Jayfeather leaves Mothwing's thoughts and Mothwing can tell what Jayfeather had been doing. Mothwing mentions again that having no connection with StarClan doesn't make her any less of a good medicine cat. She then picks up her herbs and leaves with Mistystar, back to RiverClan.

Night WhispersEdit

Mothwing is heard, but not seen, when Dovepaw focuses her hearing on the RiverClan camp while waiting forTigerheart. Mothwing is heard asking Willowshine if she made sure Pouncetail's bedding was fixed.
Mothwing is seen later in the book when she is escorted to the ThunderClan camp by Thornclaw andSpiderleg. She breaks away from the two warriors and says she could have found her own way there. Jayfeather decides they should talk down by the lake since his den is full of sick cats. Mothwing asks howBriarlight is and he says she has shaken off the infection. Jayfeather reminds himself not to fall into the old bonds of friendship with Mothwing. Once they reach the lake, she tells him that Willowshine told Mothwing that StarClan wants them to stop talking to the other medicine cats. She tries to reason with Jayfeather that he shouldn't listen to StarClan all the time and do what's best for his Clanmates. Mothwing is angered when Jayfeather refuses to listen to her and when he turns to leave she offers him herbs if he's desperate. Jayfeather bluntly declines the offer and Mothwing leaves without saying another word. The whole time, Yellowfang was warning Jayfeather to keep his mouth shut.

Sign of the MoonEdit

Mothwing appears very briefly at the Gathering alongside her apprentice, Willowshine. It is noted that they are separated from all of the other medicine cats.

The Forgotten WarriorEdit

At a Gathering, Mothwing is still attempting to promote conversation with the other medicine cats to rekindle the bond medicine cats are meant to share. The other medicine cats reply shortly, and the frustrated she-cat gives up and sits with Willowshine.
At another Gathering, when Dawnpelt accuses Jayfeather of murdering Flametail, she and the other medicine cats agree with Mistystar and Onestar that he should be suspended from his duties. Jayfeather then retorts that they walk alone and had no place to tell him what to do, and he continues being ThunderClan's medicine cat.

The Last HopeEdit

Mothwing is first seen after Jayfeather sneaks to Moonpool despite being banned from medicine cat duties. She admits to Jayfeather that Willowshine refused to come because of the message she received from StarClan.
Jayfeather tells her how StarClan is frightened of the Dark Forest, and that the Dark Forest has been training Clan cats in their sleep for the battle. Mothwing, due to lack in belief in StarClan, is confused by this but seems scared much to Jayfeather's amazment. She tells him how some of her clanmates have been acting strange and guesses Hollowflight, Icewing, and Beetlewhisker are training there.
Mothwing offers help to Jayfeather, and he tells her how Hawkfrost, her brother, is involved. She is filled with grief by this, but then declares that she is not her brother and she is loyal to her clan. She then promises to persuade Willowshine to visit Moonpool again.
Later when Jayfeather is going to visit her in RiverClan, he is stopped by a patrol and led to camp. Mothwing says she has to talk to Jayfeather alone, and she tells Willowshine to collect mallow while she talks. Willowshine seems upset by this but leaves. Mothwing exclaims in annoyance at her apprentice's blind faith in StarClan.
Mothwing scraps her claws against that ground and says that cats are ignoring common sense listening to starry old cats, but then apologizing and admits that she respects his faith in StarClan as it has helped lead the Clans through hard times before.
She is not mentioned at the gathering, only the three medicine cats, Willowshine, Littlecloud and Kestrelflight are pointed out.
Later Mothwing comes to the ThunderClan camp and tells Jayfeather to come with her, and that there is somthing he must see. After Firestar objects to this he explains that he must go and leaves anyway. They head back toward RiverClan but are stopped by a patrol of WindClan cats who, after a while, allow them to continue.
She shows Jayfeather a smouldering reed that has not extinguished for days despite the rain, revealing that the reed has been burning since the Gathering. Jayfeather reconizes it as a sign from Flametail, and explains to her that the reed means he must talk to Flametail in StarClan. As Jayfeather leaves, Mothwing notes that she will know that he has found what he is looking for if the flame on the reed goes out.
Mothwing is not seen again but is mentioned by Willowshine when Jayfeather is reuniting StarClan, and again by Jayfeather later.

In the Tigerstar and Sasha ArcEdit

Return to the ClansEdit

Moth is shown on the cover with her brothers, Hawk and Tadpole. She is colored wrong and shown as a silver tabby with green eyes, even though she is supposed to be a gold tabby with amber eyes.
They are born during this book to Sasha and Tigerstar, although their father doesn't know about them. Sasha lets them out of the den to play and Moth worries if it will be safe outside because there might be foxes. Tadpole assures her that he will protect her from any threats. The three of them climb to the top of the den with some difficulty and are later scared by a bird that jumps out of the woods.
Back in the den, Sasha tells the kits about a story when her old owner, Ken, saved her from a fox in the woods. Moth tells Sasha she shouldn't be sad that she doesn't know where Ken went.
The kits are often seen playing and hunting together. Sasha wonders whether she should tell them about Tigerstar or not.
When Sasha is out hunting one day, the kits decide to go into Twolegplace to look for Ken. Moth is shown to be cautious of going into an unknown place and she sticks close to Tadpole. When they come in contact with some BloodClan cats, they are very scared and run away. They decided to hide from the BloodClan cats in an old Twoleg nest, but they get stuck inside by accident. A water pipe inside ends up breaking and the nest begins to fill with water. Sasha arrives just in time to save Moth and Hawk, but unfortunately Tadpole drowns after helping his siblings up. Moth, Hawk, and Sasha grieve for Tadpole's death and head back to their den in the forest.
A rogue named Pine appears near their den one day and offers to take them to a farm where some friends of his live with their kits. They think it's a wonderful farm, but the cats already living there don't appreciate them barging in and they try to force Sasha and her kits to leave. Sasha attacks the she-cat and claims that she is a warrior. They leave the farm in search for a better place to live. They travel on toward Sunningrocks and stop on the stepping stones, where Sasha tells Moth and Hawk about Tigerstar.
A patrol of RiverClan cats finds them and Leopardstar demands to know why they are on RiverClan territory. Sasha reasons with Leopardstar and the leader allows them to join RiverClan. Mistyfoot takes Moth and Hawk to the nursery to care for them, while Sasha thinks about what has happened. After a short while Leopardstar makes Moth and Hawk into apprentices and gives them their new Clan names, Mothpaw and Hawkpaw. They are seen training with Stormfur and Blackclaw and have adjusted to Clan life well.
One day, Mothpaw and Hawkpaw see some RiverClan cats play-fighting with each other and one of them pretends to be Tigerstar. Mothpaw and Hawkpaw don't understand why the fighting cats are talking about Tigerstar and killing. Sasha reminds them that they shouldn't talk about Tigerstar to any of the other cats and Mothpaw and Hawkpaw promise not to.
Mothpaw and Hawkpaw later play with a few bones they find on the ground and the other RiverClan cats are shocked, because those were the remaining pieces of Tigerstar's Hill of Bones. Leopardstar takes them aside to explain all the horrible things Tigerstar did to the Clans. Sasha realizes that she can't stay with RiverClan anymore, and says goodbye to her kits before leaving. She reminds them once more not to mention Tigerstar to any of the RiverClan cats, then leaves.

In the Field Guide ArcEdit

Cats of the ClansEdit

When Rock talks about Mothwing, he says that she is a constant puzzle to StarClan, since she doesn't believe in it. But, StarClan allowed her to stay because they saw that she only had the welfare of her Clan at heart. Unfortunately, she has more responsibilities than medicine alone. He tells how Hawkfrost had threatened to revealed the truth to RiverClan unless Mothwing made up fake prophecies and how StarClan couldn't warn Mothwing about the poisonous Twoleg fluid that ended up killing her Clanmates. Worried that her lie may destroy her Clan, she asks requests help from her good friend, Leafpool, who began speaking to Mudfur on Mothwing's behalf. Rock then explains how Willowpaw became Mothwing's apprentice and Feathertail and Leafpool assisted her in the StarClan part of her training. She respects her mentor's disbelief, and respects her in every other way.

Battles of the ClansEdit

Mothwing does not formally appear, but is noted to be shown as the full medicine cat of RiverClan in the RiverClan facts. She is also mentioned as having made a trip to ThunderClan with Blackclaw.

In the Short Stories and PlaysEdit

Ultimate Leader Election: FirestarEdit

She, along with Jayfeather, Barkface and Littlecloud, measures the length of line of stones used for voting on each side of the stick. They come to the conclusion that the majority of cats voted for Firestar to lead all four Clans temporarily.

In the NovellasEdit

Hollyleaf's StoryEdit

Mothwing does not formally appear in Hollyleaf's Story, but is listed in the allegiances.

TriviaEdit

  • Mothwing has been mistakenly described with blue eyes many times.[14]
  • She has SkyClan blood, because her grandmother, Leopardfoot, is Spottedleaf's sister and because her father, Tigerstar, is a descendent of Gorseclaw.[15]
  • She has ThunderClan blood, because her father, Tigerstar, was born in ThunderClan.[16]
  • She has kittypet blood, as her mother, Sasha, was formerly a kittypet.[2]
  • She was seen training with Stormfur, so it is possible that he was her mentor.[17]
  • Cherith thinks that Mothwing will go to StarClan, although she would be very surprised. [15]
  • Mothwing is mistakenly depicted as a ginger cat in Cats of the Clans.[18]
  • Kate thinks that after the battle with the Dark Forest, Mothwing would believe in StarClan, because "it's difficult to deny something you've seen with your own eyes".[19]
  • In the Erin Hunter Chat 4Kate and Vicky think that if Hawkfrost hadn't sent the false sign of a moth's wing for Mudfur, StarClan wouldn't have sent him a sign to choose her as a medicine cat. However, Cherithcontradicts them by saying that she thinks that they would have done it.[20]

                    BlueStar History

Crookedpaw first sees Bluepaw at a Gathering, where they begin a friendly conversation, but they are often hushed by both Bluepaw and Crookedpaw's Clanmates. Bluepaw at first doesn't know who the tom is, but he introduces himself as Crookedpaw. They start to talk. Bluepaw tells him who the medicine cats and leaders were, telling him that Hawkheart killed her mother, and they joke about Stonetooth, ShadowClan's retiring deputy. When a breeze ruffles the cats, Crookedpaw presses his pelt against Bluepaw's.
Later on, ThunderClan and RiverClan have a battle overSunningrocks. Bluepaw sees Crookedpaw, thinking he's not going to attack, but Crookedpaw lunges at her and they end up tumbling down the side of Sunningrocks. Crookedpaw hesitates and Bluepaw swipes at his nose. Not knowing that she is missing her shot, Crookedpaw lunges at her again and this time holds her down. Bluepaw yowls in pain but Crookedpaw refuses to let go. Then Bluepaw's sister, Snowpaw, joins in the battle and fights with Bluepaw against Crookedpaw. Bluepaw and Snowpaw end up winning the fight. She is also seen at a Gathering, scowling when Oakheart jumps onto the Highrock.
Bluepaw and Crookedpaw reunite at a Gathering - Crookedpaw is now Crookedjaw, and Bluepaw is now Bluefur. Bluefur knows jokingly how Crookedjaw got his name, and when Crookedjaw questions her, she tells him that his tail's still straight - due to an earlier joke when they first met each other.
Moons pass, and Crookedjaw is now RiverClan's deputy. Crookedjaw sees her when Bluefur is on the patrol to take Sunningrocks back from RiverClan without a fight. He notices Bluefur and Whitestorm are whispering to each other. Afterward, Ottersplash voices her concerns, noticing that Oakheart was talking with her. Crookedjaw dismisses this, stating that Oakheart was probably asking Bluefur what was going on. When casually asking Oakheart about the patrol, Oakheart doesn't mention talking to Bluefur. Crookedjaw suspects that Oakheart thinks a conversation with a ThunderClan warrior wasn't worth mentioning.
Later, Mapleshade reveals that the two kits apparently found by Graypool are Oakheart's kits, and that of a ThunderClan warrior. The leader Crookedstar questions Oakheart about this, and he admits that they are, in fact, his and Bluefur's kits, and that she gave them up to be ThunderClan deputy, since she couldn't let Thistleclaw take over the position. Crookedstar feels guilty about this, as he knew Thistleclaw was being trained in the Dark Forest, and wonders if he could've toldSunstar, enabling Bluefur to keep her kits.

Bluestar's Prophecy

Bluestar appears in the prologue during the Dog Pack attack on ThunderClan where she saves Fireheart from the leader of The Pack by knocking him into the gorge but she then falls in and nearly drowns. She hearsOakheart teaching her how to swim long enough to get to their kits, Mistyfoot and Stonefur. She apologizes and soon after they forgive her, she dies.
Bluekit and Snowkit are born to Moonflower and Stormtail. Bluekit finally opens her eyes, after a lot of commotion from Swiftbreeze about why she hasn't, and she and Snowkit are taken out of the nursery byPatchkit and Leopardkit, who show them around camp and take them to the apprentices' den where they start to talk with Dapplepaw. Bluekit wants to explore the camp on her own, so she and Snowkit slip away and cause mischief around the camp; they meet a few warriors and the elders, like Stonepelt, who quickly shoos them out of the warriors' den. Snowkit and Bluekit find a lichen den, and go into it. It appears to be Pinestar, the leader of ThunderClan at that time's, den. Featherwhisker, the medicine cat apprentice appears and takes them to the elders, where they talk for a while.
The next day, Moonflower takes her kits to meet Stormtail, their father. They wait in camp a long time until he comes back from hunting. He admires his kits, complimenting that they look better with their eyes open. Stormtail later starts to part from them when he announces that Pinestar wants to share prey with them. Bluekit asks if she can watch, and Stormtail growls that he had heard about the mischief in the warriors' den. After this, Snowkit and Bluekit meet Goosefeather, Moonflower's brother and the medicine cat of ThunderClan. The kits know who he is almost immediately. They drift off into conversation until Pinestar tells Moonflower he needs her. Moonflower asks Goosefeather if it's okay if he can manage them for a bit, and he replies that he can do it. Snowkit and Bluekit explore Goosefeather's den, and Snowkit swallows some poppy seeds. After they are discovered, Goosefeather looks over Snowkit and assures Moonflower she will be okay, and just needs to sleep it off, but is still very worried. Moonflower becomes extremely agitated at this, and mutters angrily as she hauls Bluekit and Snowkit back into the nursery.
A few moons later, Bluepaw is apprenticed to Stonepelt. When Goosefeather sees an omen on the vole that was Snowpaw's first catch, he announces to the Clan that unless they attack WindClan, they will be destroyed. Pinestar decides to attack at dawn. He tells Snowpaw and Bluepaw that they will be messengers to find and help injured cats, rather than participate in the fighting, since they haven't learned to fight yet.
On the morning of the fight, Goosefeather announces that he has seen another sign from StarClan: they must destroy WindClan's medicine supply because he found a piece of catmint on the vole's fur. During the battle, Bluepaw watches uneasily and helps tend the wounded. Later, in horror, she watches Moonflower, her mother, being attacked and killed by the medicine cat, Hawkheart, who was originally a warrior. Pinestar soon calls the retreat for ThunderClan when he realizes they are losing the battle.
Bluepaw falls into depression after Moonflower's death as she has no interest in going on patrols and speaks very little to her Clanmates. Due to the recent battle, her former mentor, Stonepelt has retired because of a shoulder injury that wouldn't heal properly and her new mentor is Sunfall, the ThunderClan deputy. She resents her apprentice tasks, and only after Sunfall talks to her does she begin to notice how everyone is avoiding her. At the next Gathering, Bluepaw meets Crookedpaw for the first time and they become friends. Bluepaw begins to act friendly towards her Clanmates again. She just returns to camp when they learn that RiverClan is invading Sunningrocks. At the battle, Bluepaw and Snowpaw work together to fight off Crookedpaw, and soon RiverClan are forced to retreat. However, afterwards Bluepaw is very upset because she thought Crookedpaw was her friend.
A while later, Goosefeather is treating Bluepaw's wounds from a fox when he suddenly reveals a prophecy to her, saying, "Like fire, you will blaze through the forest. But beware, even the most powerful flames can be quenched by water." Not long after, Bluepaw and Snowpaw receive their warrior names, Bluefur and Snowfur. A few days after the Gathering, Pinestar tells Bluefur that he had overlooked part of her training, and that he would be taking her to the Moonstone so that he may speak with StarClan. Once they reach the Moonstone, Bluefur dreams that she is drowning in a fierce current.
Not long after their return, Leopardfoot begins to give birth to Pinestar's kits. The next morning, Bluefur finds that she has a horrible bellyache, but recovers soon. Rosepaw and Sweetpaw are also ill, possibly from a mouse they shared with Bluefur, and while Rosepaw is able to recover, Sweetpaw grows sicker and eventually dies. Much to Bluefur's annoyance, Snowfur continues to show deep feelings for the new warrior, Thistleclaw.
A little later, Bluefur finds the young RiverClan warrior, Oakheart, who is Crookedpaw's brother, sunning himself in ThunderClan territory. Bluefur is furious and attacks him. He pushes her into a stream, and she panics, thinking she is drowning, but Oakheart points out that she can stand on the bottom. Bluefur snaps at him and makes him leave. She then starts to think about him, even though she keeps telling herself it's against The Warrior Code to fall in love with Oakheart. But she can't stay away from him or keep him out of her thoughts.
Rosetail finds her drenched and says she looks "moony," much like the way Snowfur was mooning over Thistleclaw. Rosetail keeps pressing Bluefur until she snaps at her. Rosetail then tells her that Thrushpelt has had enough time to moon over Bluefur, and she is surprised because she thought of him only as a friend.
Snowfur tells Bluefur that she is expecting Thistleclaw's kits. Bluefur pretends she is overjoyed, but she really is devastated. Snowfur is surprised when she gives birth to only one kit, who she names Whitekit. Bluefur is surprised at Thistleclaw's kindness to her sister.
After that, Bluefur finds a tuft of dog fur and brings it to the nursery for Whitekit to play with. She then coaxes Snowfur to go on a walk with her. As they walk, Snowfur finds out that Bluefur is mooning over Oakheart. She runs and Bluefur finds her watching ShadowClan warriors hunting in ThunderClan territory. They chase them across the border and Snowfur runs out onto the Thunderpath. As Snowfur is on the Thunderpath, a monsterkills her. Bluefur is even more devastated, similar to her emotions of Moonflower's death, and has trouble telling Whitekit. After Bluefur tells him, Whitekit cannot stay away from his dead mother. Later, Sunstar has the same kind of talk with Bluefur that he did when Moonflower died.
After Sunstar claims back Sunningrocks, Bluefur and Oakheart spend the night together at Fourtrees. After standing in the cold, she doesn't want to just sit there and do nothing, so Bluefur challenges Oakheart to a race to the top of one the four oaks. Oakheart then reveals he can't climb, and Bluefur shows him how. Oakheart then vows to teach Bluefur how to swim. Bluefur has no interest, for she fears the water because of Goosefeather's prophecy. Oakheart and Bluefur then build a nest in one of the roots of the great oaks. Bluefur becomes pregnant with their kits.
Leopardfoot tells Bluefur that it is clear that she is expecting kits. Bluefur is unsure of how to explain it, but Thrushpelt generously offers to say he is the father, because he loves her. As Bluefur has her kits, Snowfur comes and helps her along; she then gives birth to two daughters and a son, MistykitMosskit, and Stonekit. She doesn't let Thrushpelt name them because she wants her kits to remember the river. As the deputy to Sunstar, Tawnyspots, becomes very sick and must retire soon, Bluefur realizes she must give up her kits so she can become deputy instead of Thistleclaw, who is too violent, and threatens every Clan. She leaves in the middle of the night with her kits and makes them think it's a game called "Secret Escape": they go to Sunningrocks where Oakheart is waiting.
The weather then takes a turn for the worse, and Bluefur realizes that her kits won't survive if she doesn't do something. She makes holes in the snow to try to keep her kits warm. As she moves them from hole to hole, Stonekit complains of being tired. Bluefur decides to let her kits sleep and she also dozes off. When Bluefur wakes up, she wakes up her kits. Mosskit doesn't awaken. Bluefur desperatley tries to bring her out of it but fails. She hears Snowfur, her dead sister, telling her to let go of Mosskit. Bluefur looks up to see Mosskit talking to Snowfur with excitement as she goes to StarClan. Bluefur gives her two remaining kits, Stonekit and Mistykit, to Oakheart. This is the last time she talks to Oakheart. She buries Mosskit and tells the Clan that afox took her kits. She acts devastated, but is even more inside.
She is then chosen to be deputy of ThunderClan. When Sunstar dies, she becomes leader of ThunderClan, and picks Redtail to be her deputy. Featherwhisker takes her to Moonstone to receive her nine lives: Pinestar,LarksongMumblefootWeedwhisker, Sweetpaw, Mosskit, Sunstar, Moonflower and Snowfur give her these lives. When Mosskit comes to give her mother a life, Bluefur says she's sorry for her death, and Mosskit simply replies that she misses her.
At the end of the book, she and Whitestorm see a kittypet named Rusty on a fence, staring into the forest. Whitestorm remarks, after a close to successful attempt to catch and kill a bird, that it wasn't bad. The kittypet haunts Bluestar's mind, as before, Spottedleaf received a prophecy, "Fire alone can save our Clan."Bluestar thinks the kittypet might be the fire.
After sharing tongues with Brindleface and Lionheart, she goes to the medicine den and admits all her thoughts to Spottedleaf. Spottedleaf simply replies, "This is a choice you will not regret." She appears in the manga at the end, making Rusty an apprentice warrior of ThunderClan.

Firestar's Quest

Bluestar appears as a StarClan cat, telling Firestar about SkyClan when he visits the Moonstone for answers. Firestar becomes angry at Bluestar and the rest of StarClan for lying to him, but he quickly gets over it.
When Firestar and Sandstorm start their journey, they eventually come to an abandoned Twoleg nest. Sandstorm wants to stay for the night, but Firestar convinces her that they need to continue, even though a raging storm had already begun. When they begin traveling upstream, Firestar looks into the clouds and somehow sees Bluestar's face in the clouds. Her face is pleading, as if trying to tell him something. Firestar starts to yowl a question, but is cut off by a bang of lightning, in which Bluestar's face then disappears. After Firestar and Sandstorm get separated, Firestar realizes that Bluestar was trying to warn them.

SkyClan's Destiny

Bluestar is seen in one of Leafstar's dreams along with Snowfur, Spottedleaf, Whitestorm, Cloudstar andSkywatcher. Spottedleaf introduces Leafstar to Bluestar, saying she was the leader before Firestar.

In the Original Arc

Into the Wild

In the prologue, Bluestar is seen in the ThunderClan camp, staring at the night sky. The ThunderClan medicine cat, Spottedleaf, appears next to her and tells Bluestar that all the cats will recover from the battle at Sunningrocks. Bluestar tells Spottedleaf she is worried, because ThunderClan hasn't lost a battle in their own territory since she became leader, and also because fewer kits have been born. While they are talking, Spottedleaf receives a message from StarClan: "Fire alone can save our Clan." At first, Bluestar is unsure about this message, but trusts Spottedleaf.
Bluestar is seen with Lionheart when they meet Rusty for the first time near Twolegplace. Graypaw had fought the kittypet and he is startled when Bluestar offers Rusty a place in ThunderClan. Rusty later accepts this offer. He is brought to the Clan, and after proving himself worthy by fighting Longtail and loosing his collar, Bluestar names him Firepaw. She names Lionheart deputy after the death of Redtail, and takes Firepaw as her apprentice. Before Bluestar punishes Firepaw, Firepaw tells Graypaw that Bluestar will probably make him a loner once she's done with him, but Graypaw says that Bluestar is very fair, and would never throw him out, especially since they have such an important ShadowClan cat held prisoner. She tells the Clan that she thinks that ShadowClan has driven out WindClan since their scent is in the WindClan territory. Also she tells the Clan that she would take Firepaw as her apprentice. Bluestar ends up punishing Firepaw, for feedingYellowfang before his Clan, by making him take care of Yellowfang while ThunderClan kept her prisoner. Bluestar tells Firepaw that he should continue his training, after a few days of taking care of Yellowfang, and tells him that she'll make sure one of the queens will take care of her.
Before ThunderClan enters the clearing into the Gathering, Bluestar tells Ravenpaw, Graypaw and Firepaw to not waste any of their time, and that this is the time to meet their enemies, and learn from them. WhenBrokenstar demands hunting rights from the other Clans, Bluestar refuses to agree. Later, she, Tigerclaw, Firepaw, Graypaw, and Ravenpaw go to the Moonstone so she can share dreams with StarClan. Once the get there, Bluestar chooses Firepaw to go inside with her and Tigerclaw while the other apprentices wait outside. During their return, they are attacked by rats, and Bluestar loses a life, and tells Tigerclaw that she lost her fifth life. The ShadowClan cats attacked the camp in their absence, and Lionheart was killed in the battle. Bluestar names Tigerclaw the new deputy.
One day in her den, she is battle training Firepaw when she reveals that she had really lost her seventh life in the battle with the rats. Later, when Spottedleaf is killed and Frostfur's kits are taken, Bluestar sends Firepaw to retrieve Yellowfang and to question her. Soon, she sends a patrol led by Whitestorm, telling him "he might see a friend". They come back, and they revealed that they had the kits and that they drove Brokenstar and his rogues out of ShadowClan. Graypaw and Firepaw tell Bluestar that the timid apprentice Ravenpaw had died in the battle, and as much as she grieves, Bluestar gives the pair their warrior names - Graystripe and Fireheart.

Fire and Ice

Fireheart talks to Bluestar about the Sunningrocks battle and Redtail killing Oakheart, but Bluestar does not think so, and she says that a deputy should not kill another deputy. She also learns that Ravenpaw is living with a loner.
Bluestar makes sure that WindClan is found and returned to their territory by sending Fireheart and Graystripe to go bring them out of exile. She copes with many problems throughout the book, one of them being the possible threat of RiverClan and ShadowClan making an alliance with each other. She also comes down withgreencough, which causes her to lose her eighth life. Tigerclaw sets a trap for her by the Thunderpath, hoping that she will die when she tries to bring a message to him. However, Cinderpaw instead falls into the trap.
Later on, it is suspected that RiverClan and ShadowClan are hunting in ThunderClan territory. RiverClan has an excuse unknown by Bluestar, but instead of ShadowClan, it turns out to be Brokenstar, the exiled former leader of ShadowClan, and his band of rogues. Brokenstar and the rogues later attacks the ThunderClan camp, but is defeated and blinded by Yellowfang. Bluestar accepts the newly named Brokentail into the Clan as a prisoner.

Forest of Secrets

Fireheart begins investigating the battle at Sunningrocks when Redtail was killed to find out about Tigerclaw, but in the process, he discovers Bluestar's greatest secret: the RiverClan warriors, Mistyfoot and Stonefur, are her kits.
When Fireheart asks what Bluestar was going to say about Brokentail at the Gathering, she said she would say nothing, because it doesn't concern the other Clans and he is ThunderClan's responsibility now. She tells both Tigerclaw and Fireheart that no one is to say anything about Brokentail or the attack of the rogue cats. However, the other Clans find out about it and declare war, and Bluestar is accused by her warriors of putting the Clan in danger.
When Graystripe and Fireheart come back from Barley's Farm to see Ravenpaw, Tigerclaw notices that they are full-fed but bring no fresh-kill, so Bluestar says that they will hunt for the Clan until the next sunrise. She appoints Mousefur and Whitestorm as the mentors of Thornpaw and Brightpaw. Bluestar denies Fireheart's accusations towards Tigerclaw and denies that Mistyfoot and Stonefur have ThunderClan blood. When Fireheart tells about some unknown rogues near Twolegplace, Bluestar tells him that sometimes she thinks he spends too much time there, but orders the patrols to keep a lookout.
Bluestar finally believes Fireheart about Tigerclaw's treachery when Tigerclaw brings the rogue cats to attack ThunderClan. While the other Clan cats are busy fighting them off, Tigerclaw slips into Bluestar's den and is about to kill her, but is stopped by Fireheart. Bluestar exiles Tigerclaw from ThunderClan, and says that if he is caught on their territory again, the warriors can kill him. She makes Fireheart her deputy, which comes much to the Clan's surprise because of his kittypet origins. However, the ceremony is after moonhigh, which is against Clan customs, and many elders think it to be a bad omen.

Rising Storm

Bluestar has become a shell of her former self after Tigerclaw's treachery, leaving most of the management of the Clan to Fireheart, and sometimes forgetting things about what is going on. After learning about Tigerclaw's treachery, she trusts only Fireheart and Whitestorm. Whitestorm tells Fireheart that Brindleface thinks her two kits are ready to be warriors, and that maybe good news could cheer Bluestar up, but the leader becomes furious at Fireheart when he says that there are no warriors in the camp, making a rule that there should be at least three warriors in the camp at all times. Bluestar announces Fireheart's requests as mentors of Brindleface's kits, Dustpelt mentoring Ashpaw, and Darkstripe mentoring Fernpaw.
When trying to travel to Highstones to speak with StarClan, Bluestar smells RiverClan cats, and Fireheart thinks she's hoping she'll see her kits, Mistyfoot and Stonefur. They are stopped by a WindClan patrol led byMudclaw on the way to Highstones and forced to return. She begins to think that StarClan does not want her to speak with them.
When Bluestar tells Fireheart to gather all the warriors to come to the Gathering, Fireheart asks who they should take, and Bluestar lists the names easily, leaving out Cloudpaw and including Ashpaw. When Mousefur asks Bluestar what they are going to say about WindClan not allowing her to go to the Moonstone, she tells her that she will say nothing and that WindClan knows what they did wrong. Sandstorm tells Fireheart that Bluestar seemingly changed since Tigerclaw's attack with the rogues, and Fireheart agrees with her, but tells that Bluestar is still the same. When everyone at the Gathering wants to know what happened to Tigerclaw, Bluestar tells them that it is none of their business and that it only concerns ThunderClan.
When the ThunderClan cats find Littlecloud and Whitethroat on ThunderClan territory, Bluestar finds out thatNightstar is sick, despite seeming fine last night at the Gathering. Bluestar agrees with Yellowfang to send the cats back to ShadowClan and instructs Fireheart to do so.
Later, when there is a fire in the forest near ThunderClan's camp, Bluestar helps get the cats out, being more alert than usual. When all of ThunderClan is sheltering with RiverClan, she decides that StarClan has turned their backs on her and declares war against her warrior ancestors.

A Dangerous Path

Bluestar goes through a huge depression, caused by Tigerclaw's treachery and StarClan not helping ThunderClan. She is told by Fireheart that Tigerclaw, now Tigerstar, is the new leader of ShadowClan. Bluestar has now grown to loathe StarClan, believing that they have betrayed her.
She believes that WindClan is stealing prey from ThunderClan, when in reality the evidence shows that it is a dog, and prepares to launch an attack on them. Fireheart travels to WindClan to set up a peace meeting in an attempt to avert an inter-Clan war. He manages to prevent the battle, but Bluestar is disappointed in him.
When Bluestar leads a patrol past Sunningrocks, they are attacked by a RiverClan patrol. She is attacked by her own kits, Mistyfoot and Stonefur, and Fireheart stops them by revealing to them that Bluestar is their mother. She also allows Graystripe to rejoin ThunderClan after he is banished from RiverClan for warning Fireheart.
She disappears from camp without warning any of her Clan, and travels to Mothermouth to share tongues with StarClan. They warn her of the "pack," saying that "it will bring more death and destruction than the forest has ever seen before."
She portrays her hatred of StarClan to her own Clan by giving only Cloudpaw his warrior name, Cloudtail; she does this because of his belief that StarClan does not exist, and also because she only trusts Fireheart, therefore she thinks his apprentice is the only one that deserves to become a warrior. This causes Swiftpawand Brightpaw, the two older apprentices who Bluestar has neglected, to travel to Snakerocks in hope of discovering what has been stealing ThunderClan prey, all in attempts to impress Bluestar. They are brutally attacked by dogs, and Swiftpaw dies. Brightpaw barely manages to survive, but with a gruesome scar on her face. Bluestar gives the dying warrior ceremony to Brightpaw, naming her Lostface.
Fireheart comes up with a plan to rid ThunderClan of the Snakerocks menace, which turns out to be a pack of dogs which are fed by Tigerstar. When Tigerstar pins Fireheart down so that the lead dog could catch up to him, Fireheart is saved by Bluestar, who cannons into the lead dog's side, knocking the dog and herself off the side of the gorge and into the river, also giving up her ninth life to save her Clan. During her final conversation with Fireheart, she reveals to him that she helped defeating the dog pack because she knew StarClan and ThunderClan had not betrayed her. When she saw the Clan working together to drive off the dogs, she realized that none of her Clanmates were traitors, and she could not leave the Clan she loved so much to face the danger alone. She is also forgiven by Mistyfoot and Stonefur, who accept her as their mother. She shares tongues with them for the first and last time. She dies naming Fireheart leader, and telling him that he is the fire that would save the Clan.

The Darkest Hour

Fireheart lets Stonefur and Mistyfoot say goodbye to their mother before they return back to RiverClan. Whitestorm apologizes to Fireheart for not watching Bluestar, claiming that it was his fault that Bluestar had died, but he told Whitestorm there was no need for an apology. Fireheart tells the Clan all about Bluestar and her secret past. Cinderpelt talks about Bluestar during her burial ceremony, and she says that Bluestar was a noble leader. When Fireheart sits next to Bluestar's body, he feels security, like a kit with his mother.
When Fireheart is receiving his nine lives, Bluestar gives Fireheart his ninth and final life, along with the gifts of nobility, certainty, and faith, and his leader name, Firestar. She then gives him the book's main prophecy: "Four will become two, Lion and Tiger will meet in battle, and Blood will rule the forest."
During the battle with BloodClan at Fourtrees, she also explains that his body needs to recover from the loss of his first life before he can rejoin the battle. She tells him that there will always be five Clans in the forest, and that she will go back with him in the battle.

In the New Prophecy Arc

Midnight

In the prologue, Bluestar, as a StarClan warrior, chooses the ThunderClan representative to go to the sun-drown-place. She also challenges her mate Oakheart when he chooses Feathertail to go on the journey, and he says asks her if she thinks Feathertail was not mentored well, because Feathertail was mentored by Mistyfoot, Bluestar's kit. When Nightstar chooses Tawnypelt, Bluestar says that she has strength and courage. But when Deadfoot chooses Crowpaw, Bluestar asks him if he wants to make another choice, but he dares any cat to say he's not worthy. When Bluestar asks if StarClan approves of Crowpaw because he is an apprentice, some cats agree, but most of them stay quiet about it.
She later appears to Brambleclaw in a dream, telling him of his fate; he needs to go with three other cats to find a new territory for the Clans.

Starlight

Bluestar is amongst those cats that meet with Midnight in the skies controlled by StarClan over their new territory. Bluestar tells Spottedleaf that they chose the four cats to lead the Clans out of the forest, well. When Oakheart says that trouble comes from Twolegs, Bluestar says that they both know that not just Twolegs cause problems, but also the Clans themselves. She is the first to welcome Midnight, and she tells her that StarClan owes her thanks. She states that every loyal warrior wants what is best for their Clan.
When Yellowfang says she sees dark times ahead, Bluestar asks her what she means. She cautions Spottedleaf against looking too hard for the future of cats because she "of all cats should know that sometimes there is nothing we can do."[24] When Spottedleaf says she would use all the power in StarClan to protect Firestar, Bluestar says that even that wouldn't be enough. She tells Midnight that StarClan is not her place, and that she may meet her once more, but clouded times are coming.

Twilight

Bluestar is amongst the StarClan warriors at the Moonpool that tell the ThunderClan medicine cat, Cinderpelt, that she will be joining StarClan very soon. Bluestar tells her that she has served her Clan more faithfully than some cats can in their lifetime, and that it might not seem fair if they take her away. When Cinderpelt tells Bluestar there's no need to apologize, she says that there is because of how much her Clan owes her. Nightstar tells Cinderpelt that they wish they could change it, but Bluestar says that some destinies StarClan can't control, no matter how much they want to. When Cinderpelt wants to know when she will die, Bluestar says that she don't even know when, but they will be waiting for her when the time comes. She tells Cinderpelt that the strength of StarClan will be with her and they wouldn't let her face this alone. She says it hurts them all when a young cat has to go to StarClan, and she knows Cinderpelt would have continued serving her Clan for many more seasons. Bluestar tells Cinderpelt before she goes that they will always be with her. Later on, during a badger attack on ThunderClan, Cinderpelt dies defending the nursery and Sorreltail, who is giving birth to her first litter of kits.

Sunset

Bluestar, Yellowfang, and Lionheart tell the new ThunderClan medicine cat, Leafpool, that she will walk a path that few medicine cats have walked before. Leafpool asks Bluestar about three bright stars that she sees very often in the sky, but does not recognize, but Bluestar ignores her. When Leafpool asks her if she had a prophecy for her, Bluestar tells that her life was going to twist in ways hidden to her. Bluestar informs her that these stars are of cats she has not met yet, but will shape her future when she does meet them. She tells Leafpool that StarClan will always be with her, and that her path will vanish into shadow, but they will be with her every pawstep of the way. When Leafpool visits the Moonpool, Bluestar welcomes her as the new medicine cat of ThunderClan. Leafpool searches for Cinderpelt, but when she asks Bluestar where she is, Bluestar is fading away, along with the other StarClan cats.

In the Power of Three Arc

The Sight

When Leafpool appears at the Moonpool, Bluestar welcomes her, and tells her that they had a feeling she would come. Bluestar asks Leafpool if she came with good news, and she says that Graystripe was back.
When Tallstar says that Firestar would choose the warrior that knows the Clan best, Bluestar says that would be a tough decision, one that no other leader has decided before. Lionheart tells Bluestar that they should have seen that Graystripe was still alive, and told Leafpool, but Bluestar says that he was too far away for them to see him. She tells Leafpool that Brambleclaw has done well as deputy, and that Firestar would had been foolish if he had gone without a deputy. Bluestar gives Leafpool a message to tell Firestar on the matter of Graystripe or Brambleclaw being ThunderClan's deputy. She says that Firestar needs to use his head, not his heart, in his decision. With help of Jaypaw deciphering, Firestar chooses Brambleclaw to remain the deputy of ThunderClan.

Eclipse

Bluestar is seen talking to Whitestorm, Spottedleaf, and Yellowfang about the prophecy of Jaypaw, Hollypaw, and Lionpaw. Spottedleaf asks Whitestorm if Bluestar was with him, and he said she was a minute ago. Then, Bluestar enters telling them all that she would've came sooner if Tallstar wasn't fretting and had stopped her. She teases Yellowfang by saying, "Bad luck, I didn't think there were any fleas here," when she was looking at Yellowfang's flea-bitten nose. She tells them all that Tallstar was worrying over Hollypaw, Lionpaw, and Jaypaw, and that the prophecy has gotten under his pelt like a tick. Bluestar starts arguing with Yellowfang over whether to tell Hollypaw, Lionpaw, and Jaypaw the truth. Bluestar thinks it should be kept a secret, but Yellowfang thinks they should tell them. After a while, Bluestar starts to leave and tells Spottedleaf that if she stays any longer that her and Yellowfang will argue. Bluestar says that she understands Yellowfang's fears, but for now, they were to keep it a secret. Yellowfang growls under her breath that Bluestar is stubborn.

Long Shadows

Bluestar is seen among StarClan by Jaypaw, furious that greencough might destroy her Clan. She respectively greets Brightspirit when she bursts into the clearing, saying it has been a long time since they've met.

Sunrise

Yellowfang attacks Bluestar, angry that she did not tell the truth to the Clans. Bluestar asks Yellowfang what her problem is and reminds her that she was her leader. When Yellowfang says more blood will be shed on ThunderClan, Bluestar tells her she doesn't know that. After the fight, Bluestar tells her that the damage is done, and it's not her fault. She couldn't believe that Midnight betrayed them, because she thought she was going to watch over the Clans. When Yellowfang asks Bluestar if they were wrong about the Three, she yowls her diagreement and that she didn't want to lie. She thought Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight were good parents, and telling the truth would not have helped, but Yellowfang says that Bluestar had destroyed the Clan she had always tried to protect.

In the Omen of the Stars Arc

The Fourth Apprentice

Bluestar joins with three other cats in StarClan to discuss what to do about the one cat in the prophecy. Irritably shaking one of her forepaws, Bluepaw asks why they all had to meet at the waterfall, complaining that it was too noisy and too wet. Yellowfang tells her former leader to stop complaining and that she chose the meeting place because it was noisy and wet. Lionheart invites Bluestar to sit by him and she seats herself with a sniff of contempt. Bluestar tells him that if it was dry, she would be a mouse. She asks Yellowfang what she wants. After Yellowfang explains the purpose of the meeting, Bluestar sharply asks if they are certain that they have the right Three this time. When Spottedleaf says that she knows that they are the Three and that they had the same dream the night the One was born, Bluestar says that she may be right, but so much has gone on that some things change. She is against Yellowfang regarding the plan of sending the One a sign to tell her that she is part of the prophecy. Lionheart interrupts her by telling her that she needs to have faith in the cats. She tells them that they had thought Hollyleaf was good and loyal, but that she had turned out the opposite in the end.
When Feathertail enters, Bluestar asks her what she is doing, and demands if she is spying on them. WhenYellowfang says in the end, kits would go their own way to Feathertail, Bluestar says all cats do it. As Lionheart returns to conversation focus, Bluestar says that the One was already strong and clever, even without knowing the special power. After Lionheart mentions that if StarClan had meddled more, Hollyleafmight not have been lost, Bluestar's neck fur bristles as she tells the cats that the Clans had to live their own lives. She is outvoted by the other cats about sending the sign, and then asks Yellowfang who she will send it to out of Jayfeather and Lionblaze. Yellowfang responds that she will not send it to either one of them, but send it to the third cat.

Night Whispers

Bluestar is seen in the prologue. She is conversing with Yellowfang, SagewhiskerFernshade, Lionheart,Mudfur, Oakheart and Mudclaw about the battle between ThunderClan and ShadowClan. She reminds the cats that it is not the Clans' battling that they should be worrying about, but the Dark Forest, and says that Tigerstar has never understood anything but violence.

The Forgotten Warrior

When Jayfeather tries to sneak up on Ashfur, Bluestar leaps down from a branch above him, saying that she doesn't think that's a good idea. Jayfeather explains his reasoning for wanting to talk to him, and Bluestar remarks that he's kept the secrets about the murderer of Ashfur. Jayfeather retorts that she's his sister. Bluestar rests her tail on his shoulders, saying he won't learn anything from talking to Ashfur. He knows who killed him, and it is not StarClan's place to judge him. If he found his way to StarClan, he deserves to be here. Jayfeather shakes his head, saying he doesn't understand, but Bluestar wisely states that some things are beyond understanding. Jayfeather finally says that he doesn't know if Hollyleaf deserves to be back, and Bluestar replies that it is not his decision. Hollyleaf and Ashfur paid a high price for what they did. Perhaps justice has now been served.

The Last Hope

Bluestar is seen in the prologue, being warmly greeted by Half Moon. When she settles herself andSpottedleaf beside the four Ancients, Bluestar curls her tail over paws, and solemnly says that they have come to prepare for the end. When Owl Feather narrows her eyes and suspiciously asked if they would believe what the Ancients would say, Spottedleaf jumps to Bluestar's defense, arguing that her leader had always believed, but others needed convincing. Eyes glistening, Bluestar says that the Clans would make their own choices and that there was nothing more she could do. When Slant leans closer and asks Bluestar if the prophecies helped, Bluestar glances at her medicine cat, agreeing that they did and Spottedleaf had recognized the flaming star that led her to Firestar. As Slant asks if the Clans would fight alone in the final battle, Bluestar's tail thrashed, vowing that she would die a tenth time to defend ThunderClan.
Bluestar is seen in StarClan, eating a vole in the shade of a wilting juniper. She looks up in surprise when she sees Jayfeather, Whitestorm, Goosefeather, and Sunstar, and asks where they're going. Jayfeather simply replies, "Wait and see!" Bluestar pushes past Sunstar later in the united StarClan, correcting him by saying, now there are four in the prophecy. Bluestar also states that they aren't the only cats guided by a prophecy, and mentions the fire will save the Clan prophecy. After Mosskit asks Jayfeather why he took them to the terrible Dark Forest cats, Bluestar comforts the kit by reminding her that they have to know the enemy. When Jayfeather demands StarClan to fight together, Bluestar reasons that they can't fight such cruelty while divided.
After Firestar is killed, Brambleclaw sees Bluestar under thorns, and beckons her out. Bluestar comes out with Redtail, Silverstream, Brindleface, Swiftpaw, and Yellowfang following. Runningwind and Lionheart join them. Bluestar steps forward, stating that Spottedleaf isn't with StarClan, but gave Firestar a life for love. Bluestar continues, meowing that she gave him a life for nobility, even though he was born with more nobility than any warrior she ever knew. Bluestar talks about the two prophecies Firestar takes part in, and says that he left ThunderClan in the paws of a new leader. She tells Brambleclaw if he has half the courage and loyalty of Firestar, he'll be a fine leader of ThunderClan.

In the Stand-Alone Manga

The Rise of Scourge

Bluefur, then a young warrior, is on a patrol made up of herself, Thistleclaw, and his apprentice Tigerpaw. They discover a kittypet on ThunderClan territory, and Thistleclaw thinks that he should be chased out, but Bluefur defends him, saying that he is only a kit. Thistleclaw says that Bluefur is being soft on him because he is a kittypet, then asks his apprentice, Tigerpaw, what he thinks, and Tigerpaw said that the kittypet should be taught a lesson. He almost kills the kit on Thistleclaw's orders before being stopped by Bluefur, who says that a cat doesn't need to kill to win a battle.

In the Ravenpaw's Path Arc

Shattered Peace

When Ravenpaw goes to the Moonstone with Barley, Bluestar appears in a dream to Ravenpaw, along with Whitestorm and Spottedleaf. She tells Ravenpaw that it was good to see him. When Ravenpaw tells her that he thought they forgot about him, she tells him never, and that they have seen that Barley and him are in trouble. Bluestar tells Ravenpaw that they have as much right to live on the farm as much as the Clans live in the forest, because the farm is his and Barley's home. Ravenpaw says that he doesn't deserve ThunderClan's loyalty because he was no longer a Clan cat, Bluestar tells him that he may not be a Clan cat, but that he has their friendship and that is a loyalty that never dies. Finally, she wishes him luck to find ThunderClan.

In the Field Guide Arc

Secrets of the Clans

Bluestar is seen as a warrior in "Snowfur Speaks: A Sad, Cold Death" where she has given birth to her kits, Mosskit, Stonekit, and Mistykit. As Snowfur watches, Mosskit is too cold and weak, and she dies. When Bluefur tries to nudge her, she doesn't move. She exclaims, "Oh, Mosskit! What have I done? Mosskit, please wake up Mosskit, don't leave. There's warmth and safety just on the other side of the river. Your father will look after you, I promise. Just a little bit farther my tiny, brave son." Snowfur promises that she would take care of Mosskit for Bluefur. It was revealed that Whitestorm is Bluestar's nephew, explaining the great affection between them. It is revealed that Bluestar's mother was Moonflower, her mentor was Stonepelt, and she was a mentor to Frostfur and Runningwind, as well as Firestar.
She also appears in the story, "Bluepaw Speaks: My First Sight of Fourtrees." Her first Gathering is only two days after her apprentice ceremony, and her mother proudly accompanies her. She says that the moon is as bright and round as her mother's eyes. She says that there were four oaks at each of the four corners of the clearing, and the clearing was full of cats murmuring and meowing, their fur silver in the moonlight. In the center of the clearing was The Great Rock, looking like to stick straight out of the ground. Bluepaw quotes that one day, she would be the leader of ThunderClan, and she would stand on top of The Great Rock.

Cats of the Clans

Rock questions Bluestar's decision to bring Firestar into the Clan, asking whether Bluestar was blinded by the color of Firestar's pelt, knowing he fulfilled the prophecy that fire would save ThunderClan. He also says that StarClan wanted Firestar as much as Bluestar did. Rock says that Bluestar was a great leader, and the price of it is even bigger than she dreamed, giving up her kits so she could become deputy instead of Thistleclaw, who would have made the forest run with blood. He tells Mosskit that she should be proud of her mother, for her loyalty to her Clan.
Rock says that Bluestar mentored Firestar well, and trained him to be a wise and confident warrior, and she saw that Firestar was a savior as soon as the sun hit his flame-colored pelt, seeming like a gift from StarClan, who gave Spottedleaf the prophecy that fire would save the Clan. Rock also states that it is too easy to think that Bluestar went mad during the last moons of her life, after losing her kits, her mate, her kin, and betrayed by her seemingly loyal deputy; but one must remember that she died protecting her Clan, giving up her last life valiantly and making peace with her surviving kits before dying.
When Rock is talking about Yellowfang, Bluestar is briefly mentioned, saying Yellowfang persuaded her to let Brokenstar live in the ThunderClan camp. She is also mentioned in Cinderpelt's section, when Rock tells the kits that StarClan did not plan for Cinderpelt to be struck on the Thunderpath instead of Bluestar. Rock also mentions Bluestar when talking about Tallstar. He tells them how she tried to lead ThunderClan into battle against WindClan over a belief of stolen prey. Luckily, Tallstar believed Firestar's warning that Bluestar was mistaken and refused to fight. Rock also says that it was partly thanks to Onewhisker that Tallstar agreed not to fight against Bluestar. Rock mentions that Crookedstar knew who Mistystar and Stonefur's mother was the moment Oakheart came to him with a tale of finding two kits lost in the snow, because it was obvious who their mother was from the color of their fur and the scent that clung to them.
As Rock lists the deaths that Tigerstar caused, Bluestar is on the list.

Battles of the Clans

Bluestar is mentioned in "Dustpaw Speaks: Shadows in the Forest," when Tigerclaw sends Ravenpaw back to the camp to tell Bluestar about the invading ShadowClan warriors and fetch reinforcements. During Dustpaw's plan of a double Lightning Strike to make the invaders think the whole Clan has them surrounded, Longtail calls out to Bluestar to make it seem as if she was present, when she wasn't.

In the Short Stories and Plays

The Elders' Concern

None of the ThunderClan elders agree with Bluestar's naming Fireheart deputy, especially because he was a former kittypet, and the deputy ceremony took place after the time allotted by the warrior code. Halftail suggests that Bluestar has stopped caring what StarClan thinks, which is partly true. Smallear growls in response that he will never forgive Bluestar for what she has done.

Trivia

  • In an Erin Hunter Chat, it was revealed that Bluestar's name could have been Moonstar, but the Erins wanted to keep the prefix Moon- to the StarClan territories, the Moonstone and Moonpool. However, this is somewhat strange, due to the fact Bluestar's mother was named Moonflower.[25]
  • In that same chat, Vicky said Bluestar's warrior name was originally Moonstone, although this was changed later on.[25]
  • She has been mistakenly described as dark gray.[26]
  • She has been mistakenly described with pale fur.[21]
  • She has been mistakenly described and shown as pale gray.[27][28]
  • She has been depicted as a light gray cat with dark stripe on her head.[29]
  • She has been depicted as completely blue instead of blue-gray in official art.[30]
  • She has been mistakenly called Snowfur.[31]
  • In Into the Wild, Graypaw tells Firepaw that Bluestar usually only mentors deputy's kits.[32] This is false, as Frostfur and Runningwind are not Redtail or Lionheart's kits.[10]
  • It was originally stated that Bluestar and Whitestorm shared no familial relation.[33]
  • On Twitter, Kate Cary confirmed Bluestar and Oakheart are mates in StarClan, but that she and the rest of the Erin Hunter team never had time to point it out in the books.[34]

                                             SilverStream History

Silverkit is born to Willowbreeze and Crookedstar along with her littermates, Willowkit and Minnowkit. Soon after her birth, her mother and both her sisters catchgreencough, and lose their lives to it, making Silverkit

the only survivor of her litter. Her father, Crookedstar, is shaken by their deaths and tries to avoid Silverkit at first, as he doesn't want to lose her like his mate and other daughters. Oakheart insists that Crookedstar should be more fatherly and tells him he is acting like Rainflowerwhen she ignored Crookedstar after he had fallen and gotten his crooked jaw. They get in a fight, which frightens Silverkit. Her father sees her like this and calms her down, assuring her that the fight was not for real. He then formally introduces himself to Silverkit.
In the manga after the book, she is now a warrior with the name of Silverstream. She is seen sneaking off to see aThunderClan warrior, Graystripe. Crookedstar tells her he doesn't want her going out of camp alone, and she reluctantly agrees and returns to camp. When he sees her with Graystripe, Crookedstar confronts her about it. Silverstream tells him that he is obsessed with Clan loyalty, and that if her relationship with Graystripe is against the Warrior Code, then the code should be changed. She tells him that even though she loves her father, he needs to let her choose her own future.
Crookedstar sees her in a dream, at the border between StarClan and the Dark Forest. Silverstream tells him to take care of her kits and walks into StarClan. Mapleshade meets him and is satisfied that she has taken everybody that he loves - which isn't true, because Silverstream's kits are still alive - but Crookedstar coolly replies that now, everybody he loves is protected in StarClan. When Crookedstar wakes up, another RiverClan warrior tells him Mistyfoot had bad news about Silverstream.
While watching Stormkit and Featherkit playing, Crookedstar thinks to himself that she lives on in them. When Crookedstar goes to join StarClan, Silverstream is seen with her mother, Willowbreeze, and her father's friends and family.

Firestar's QuestEdit

She appears briefly in a dream to tell Firestar to do what he thinks is right concerning SkyClan, by reminding him of the life she gave to him in his leadership ceremony. She also catches a fish for him, which, as he eats it, gives him a warm feeling. While Bluestar tells him that SkyClan is none of his business, Silverstream tells Firestar that he needs to do what is right and Firestar knows that she means helping the lost Clan.

In the Original ArcEdit

Fire and IceEdit

Silverstream is the only daughter of Crookedstar, the RiverClan leader, and Willowbreeze, a RiverClan queen. She first appears when she saves Graystripe from drowning in the freezing river. She asks him what he's doing in her territory, to which Graystripe answers he is drowning. On the way back to ThunderClan, Fireheartnotices Graystripe looks back at his rescuer multiple times and Cinderpaw, Fireheart's apprentice, mischievously comments about how pretty she was.
After that she starts to secretly see Graystripe. During those meetings, she falls in love with him, despite warnings from Fireheart, and Silverstream's best friend and cousin, Mistyfoot. Fireheart sees Silverstream and Graystripe meeting once more, and Silverstream goes back to her own territory. Fireheart, frustrated at Graystripe's lack of concern for being discovered with Silverstream, finds Silverstream and tries to persuade her to break up with Graystripe. However Silverstream declares that she won't give up Graystripe and Fireheart has to leave before he is discovered by a RiverClan patrol.
She is there when RiverClan and ShadowClan are attacking WindClan. She launches herself at Fireheart without realizing who he is. She stops after Graystripe calls out for her to stop. As Fireheart is about to take a forepaw and claw Silverstream, he sees Graystripe staring at him in horror and lets her go. She runs off with Graystripe following her. Darkstripe notices and reports it to Tigerclaw. Tigerclaw says that he noticed Graystripe following her and it is clear the dark tabby suspects something going on between Graystripe and Silverstream.

Forest of Secrets Edit

Silverstream convinces Mistyfoot and Graypool to talk to Fireheart about the battle at Sunningrocks so he can find out how Oakheart died. When the RiverClan camp is flooded and Graystripe and Fireheart are taking prey to RiverClan, Silverstream reveals to Graystripe that she is going to have his kits. They are both overjoyed, yet nervous as well. Mistyfoot asks Silverstream to help her find her kits that were carried away with the flood. Graystripe and Fireheart find and rescue the kits and return them to Mistyfoot.
When Silverstream goes to meet Graystripe at Sunningrocks a moon later, she starts kitting, but something is wrong. Graystripe yowls to Fireheart, who's standing nearby, to go fetch Yellowfang. Tigerclaw sees Fireheart and asks him what is happening. When Fireheart brings Cinderpaw she tells Fireheart and Tigerclaw to lick the kits and warm them up while she works on Silverstream. Cinderpaw then manages to save the two kits, named Featherkit and Stormkit, but Silverstream dies from loss of blood, telling Graystripe good-bye, that she loves him and that he should take care of their kits. Graystripe is depressed beyond belief and doesn't know that his kits are still alive. He asks Fireheart to bury the kits with Silverstream, but when Fireheart tells him they are alive, he is overjoyed momentarily. Silverstream is buried near the river; Graystripe says she would have liked that, as she loved the river.

The Darkest Hour Edit

Silverstream gives Firestar a life during the leadership ceremony, along with the gift of loyalty to what he knows to be right. Firestar asks the she-cat if she has a message for Graystripe, but Silverstream just looks back with her eyes filled with more pain and love than a message could have described. Silverstream is described as looking just as she did in life. Firestar does not tell Graystripe of his encounter with Silverstream, as it is forbidden to by the warrior code. Later, she, along with the other cats that gave Firestar lives, runs alongside the ThunderClan leader to help him defeat Scourge.
In this book, Firestar has a dream about a she-cat with faded eyes and a swollen belly. He notices that this she-cat in his dream was Silverstream. This reminds him about her death and her remaining kits.

In the New Prophecy Arc Edit

MoonriseEdit

She appears to her son, Stormfur, in a dream, telling him to return to the Tribe of Rushing Water to help them get rid of a mountain lion known as Sharptooth. At first Stormfur does not recognize her, as he never knew her in life but he soon realizes who she is. She tells him that a prophecy can mean many things but a cat must know what path to choose. Based on this, Stormfur decides to go back. After her daughter, Feathertail, dies saving Crowpaw from Sharptooth, she comes down from StarClan and tells Stormfur not to grieve her too long, saying she will take care of her.

Dawn Edit

Though Silverstream doesn't formally appear, Leafpaw sees her and Feathertail in the waterfall while the Clansstay with the Tribe of Rushing Water, specifically during Crowfeather's warrior ceremony. When Stormfur decides to stay with the Tribe, Firestar remarks that Graystripe made a hard choice choosing Silverstream over his Clan, but from that choice he and Feathertail were born, and that it was all right for Stormfur to choose what was in his heart.

SunsetEdit

She is seen by Leafpool at the Moonpool with her daughter, Feathertail, and the many other StarClan cats who greet her as the new medicine cat of ThunderClan.

In the Power of Three ArcEdit

EclipseEdit

Jaypaw sees Silverstream in a vision while Millie is having Graystripe's kits. Jaypaw does not know who she is, but he feels that she is attached to Graystripe, and that he is attached to her too. Graystripe waits outside the nursery while Millie has their kits, and Jaypaw asks if he knows Silverstream. Graystripe tells Jaypaw how Silverstream died bearing his kits. He seems happy that Silverstream cares for his new mate, and he worries for Millie and her new kits.

Long ShadowsEdit

Silverstream appears briefly in one of Jaypaw's visions right before he meets Brightspirit, worrying about how Graystripe doesn't deserve to have his heart broken again when Millie is dangerously sick from greencoughand is close to joining StarClan. Jaypaw tells Graystripe about it, and Graystripe says it is just like Silverstream to care.

In the Omen of the Stars ArcEdit

Fading EchoesEdit

When Jayfeather and Yellowfang head towards the Place of No Stars, they cross some of StarClan's territory. Silverstream runs up to meet them, and she asks if Yellowfang had seen Feathertail anywhere, to which Yellowfang replies that she saw Feathertail at Warm-rocks earlier. Silverstream quickly thanks her and runs off to go find her.

The Last HopeEdit

Silverstream appears when Jayfeather is showing who the cats who gave Firestar his nine lives are, shortly after Firestar's death. Graystripe sees her and calls to her, and Silverstream tells him that she will be waiting for him, when he joins StarClan.

In the Lost Warrior ArcEdit

The Lost WarriorEdit

She appears from StarClan to encourage Graystripe not to give up, and that Stormfur is still alive. Their daughter, Feathertail, is with her. Graystripe also reveals he has been visited in dreams by Silverstream before, because he thinks that whenever he did dream of her, he didn't want to wake up. Silverstream visits Graystripe again with Feathertail, telling him to find ThunderClan and that he already knows to ask Millie to come with him. When Graystripe is delirious, he calls out his deceased mate's name. When Millie asks about who Silverstream is, Graystripe simply tells her Silverstream was his mate, and she died bearing his kits.

In the Field Guide ArcEdit

Secrets of the Clans Edit

She is seen as a young warrior on night watch. She goes to patrol the boundary when she suddenly splashes into water. In her confusion, she thinks that she might have wandered off the island and into the river, but then realizes that the river must have risen. She wakes Crookedstar and leads him to see the rising river, and asks him if they should evacuate the island, just to be safe, but Crookedstar gruffly says that it may go down later.
The next day, when Leopardfur and her patrol go to check how high the water has risen, two apprentices give warning that the river has risen so high that the water is breaking into the camp. Once it does, Silverstream goes to help her friend Mistyfoot, who called Silverstream to help her get her kits out of the nursery. Out of all four kits of Mistyfoot's litter, only two are found, but Silverstream and Mistyfoot take the kits to safety anyway. When RiverClan shelter in the bushes, Silverstream is the first to scent Graystripe and Fireheart. She realizes that they have Mistyfoot's missing kits, and goes to tell Mistyfoot. The story ends with Silverstream looking at Graystripe, feeling very proud of him.

Cats of the ClansEdit

Rock explains how Silverstream was respected from birth because her father Crookedstar was such a good leader. However, from the moment she met Graystripe she loved him and couldn't stop seeing him, even though it stabbed her heart with guilt when she returned to camp after a stolen moment with him. It is admitted she saved him because she thought he would clog the river, not because she was in love. In the end, she paid the highest price of all, bleeding to death at Sunningrocks while she kitted, not living to raise her kits with Graystripe. Even if she had lived, she would always swim in the river while Graystripe was as rooted to theforest as the oaks.

TriviaEdit

  • Silverstream is part WindClan, because she has a WindClan grandfather, Reedfeather; thus, four types of Clan blood thrive in her kits, Stormfur and Feathertail (ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan and SkyClan).[13]
  • She has been mentioned to have green eyes.[14]
  • In Cats of the Clans, she is shown as a blue-gray tabby.[15]
  • In the manga at the end of Crookedstar's Promise, she is shown as solid gray with a darker gray stripe on her head.[16]

                                                       Firestars History

Fireheart is mentioned, though not by name, in the comic at the end of the book when a RiverClan warrior meets with Crookedstar and tells him that a ThunderClan warrior had given Mistyfoot bad news about Silverstream.

Bluestar's Prophecy

Although not mentioned by name, Rusty is described as akittypet with a flame colored pelt and green eyes, often sitting on a fence overlooking the forestBluestar takes an interest in him after watching him while patrolling. Bluestar also sees him hunting a mouse, and notes that he has sharp eyes, and a natural hunting ability. She mentions him to the medicine cat at the time, Spottedleaf, who seems to know pretty quickly why Bluestar is interested in the kittypet. Graypaw is asked by Bluestar to keep an eye on Rusty. It is revealed that Graypaw's encounter with Rusty wasn't an accident, but that it was ordered by Bluestar herself. At the very end, Bluestar is thinking thatGoosefeather is right, and that a fire will blaze through the forest after all. Rusty only appears at the last chapter and the manga, when he is in the ThunderClan camp for the first time. From there, he is taught by Lionheart basic Clan Terminology. Bluestar holds an apprentice ceremony for Rusty, and he earns his name, Firepaw. Bluestar reminds herself of Goosefeather's prophecy, looking at Firepaw as the fire that will blaze through the Clans.

Firestar's Quest

Firestar is constantly having dreams about some unknown fleeing cats. After a Gathering, he travels to theMoonstone to share dreams with StarClan. Upon arriving and falling asleep, he speaks to Bluestar, who tells him the cats he is having dreams about are the cats of ancientSkyClan, the fifth Clan of the forest, who were driven out by the other Clans. Firestar wants to help SkyClan, but Bluestar refuses because she wants him to stay and assist his Clan. Eventually, Firestar hisses at Bluestar and argues with her, then wakes up.
Later, Silverstream appears to Firestar in a dream, giving him a fish. She reminds him of the life that she gave to him: the life of loyalty to what he feels is right. This convinces him that StarClan wants him to complete this mission, to right the wrong they failed to stop so many moons ago. Firestar is surprised at the taste, thinking that it is "warm and flavorful."
Firestar runs into Smudge while on a patrol and discovers that he is having similar dreams. That night, he decides to stay in Smudge's garden, where he then dreams ofCloudstar, the ancient leader of SkyClan. He is told that he is in the old SkyClan camp, and must make a journey to rebuild SkyClan. The next day he comes back to camp to tell Graystripe, Cinderpelt, and Sandstorm all he knows about SkyClan. At first they think that he is going to go back to being a kittypet again, but when he chooses Sandstorm to go with him on the journey, Graystripe and Cinderpelt agree to watch over the Clan while they're gone. And Firestar tells Graystripe that he wants only Sandstorm to go with him.
Sandstorm and Firestar set out in search of SkyClan. Sandstorm suggests that they spend the night in an abandoned Twoleg nest, but as Firestar steps inside, he becomes frightened from his kittypet roots and insists that they find another place to rest. They get separated after a storm hits, and Firestar looks through all of the Twoleg gardens to try and find Sandstorm. He eventually finds some cats in Twolegplace and they take him to a spot where they get their water, which is how he finds Shorty who says he has seen Sandstorm and leads Firestar to her. He fears that she had died, and feels guilty because they just had an argument about Spottedleaf. Soon they are reunited after Sandstorm saves him from a hostile kittypet.
Firestar and Sandstorm make it to SkyClan's camp, where they meet an old cat named Sky (later renamed Skywatcher), the last cat alive keeping SkyClan's memory. Skywatcher asks Firestar to rebuild the Clan, and Firestar, feeling forced to say yes, obliges. Two kittypets named Cherry and Boris join the new SkyClan, and get their apprentice names, Cherrypaw and Sparrowpaw. Firestar finds enough kittypets, loners, and roguesaround the area to rebuild SkyClan.
Before Skywatcher dies, he tells Firestar the prophecy, which later makes in an appearance in the Power of Three Arc:
"There will be three, kin of your kin, who hold the power of the stars in their paws."
Sandstorm becomes very distressed when Spottedleaf comes to help her heal Patchfoot, and Firestar lets it slip that he and Spottedleaf had seen each other before in his dream. Sandstorm states that Firestar loves Spottedleaf and how the two had always seemed to belong together when Firestar first joined the Clan. Spottedleaf says that she couldn't choose a mate, even if she wanted to very much. Firestar also tells Sandstorm he would love her for all the moons to come and that she would never be second-best to him. Firestar reveals his love for Sandstorm belonged in the life they shared and would last for all the moons to come -- basically he loves Sandstorm more than he will ever love Spottedleaf; Sandstorm is his one true love. Sandstorm accepts, although she gets slightly tense when Firestar brings up the name of Spottedleaf again.
In a dream, Skywatcher also tells him about a medicine cat that he needs to find, and he travels to Twolegplace in search of whoever it is. He asks some cats if they have dreamed of strange things, and a kittypet named Echo says that she has. When she agrees to join SkyClan, he names her Echosong. The Clan finds a large barn full of angry rats which drove out ancient SkyClan. Firestar leads the Clan into attack against them, but Rainfur is killed during the battle, and Firestar loses a life -- Sandstorm saves him from losing his other lives, and tells him she had to choose him over Rainfur. After he revives, Firestar and the otherSkyClan cats climb a tree hanging above the barn. Firestar leaps into the barn and kills the lead rat, and all the other rats flee. After the battle, he helps Leafdapple earn her nine lives and become Leafstar.
In the epilogue, Sandstorm gives birth to his two kits, whom they name Leafkit, in honor of Leafstar and Spottedleaf; and Squirrelkit, because of her bushy tail.

SkyClan's Destiny

He is mentioned a lot by Leafstar during her thoughts, telling stories, and multiple other times on his brave quest to revive SkyClan. Otherwise, he makes no formal appearances in this book. Stick also mentions him when he was trying to find Sandstorm and Firestar, and tells him that they must find the flame-colored cat.

In the Original Arc

Into the Wild

As a young kittypet named Rusty, he has been having strange dreams of himself hunting in the forest, though he would always wake up after he failed. Rusty has shown to have great interest in the forest, having inherited it from his adventurous father, Jake. He has a friend named Smudge, who is strongly against Rusty's idea of exploring the forest, claiming it is full of danger.
Rusty ventures into the forest, and is attacked by a forest cat named Graypaw. He confronts Graypaw instead of running away like most kittypets would. That impresses the ThunderClan cats, Bluestar and Lionheart, who watch from the bushes. Graypaw is curious at why Rusty is away from his Twoleg nest. He tells Rusty a few things about the Clan he lives in, called ThunderClan. Rusty, in turn, is asking questions about Clan life. As they question each other, Graypaw senses some cats from ThunderClan approaching and tells him to hide. Rusty wonders how Graypaw can scent them, though not saying it out loud. Bluestar and Lionheart appear from their hiding place, and Bluestar reveals that they had been watching the two young cats. She invites Rusty to join ThunderClan and Graypaw is startled, saying that kittypets couldn't become warriors, because they didn't have warrior blood. Lionheart voices Graypaw's thoughts differently, saying that kittypets were too soft for Clan life, deeply offending Rusty, because he himself knows differently. Rusty says that he will think about Bluestar's offer, and Bluestar gives him until sun-high the next day to decide, when Lionheart would be there. During that time he spends his last day with Smudge, and a couple of other friends. When he is seen by Lionheart and another cat, Whitestorm, he chooses to join the Clan, and they take him to his new home. On the way, they asked him if he could smell anything, and were impressed when he said he could smell other cats.
When Bluestar announces her intent to accept Rusty, many of her Clanmates are infuriated. A young warrior named Longtail taunts him, reminding his Clanmates that Twolegs would invade their territory because of Rusty's collar. Rusty attacks Longtail and hurts him, giving him a torn ear. Longtail tears off Rusty's collar with his teeth, and Bluestar accepts the broken collar as a sign that Rusty should be a Clan cat, and grants him his apprentice name, Firepaw, in honor of his flame-colored pelt.
Firepaw is mentored by Tigerclaw and Lionheart, until he eventually gets a very shocking choice for an official mentor: Bluestar. The Clan is very surprised, as it is a high honor, but Tigerclaw remarks that Firepaw wasn't being punished by feeding the enemy warrior, Yellowfang. Bluestar chose him because of his exceptional skill that exceeds the other apprentices, and because she has a suspicion that he was part of the fire prophecy. Tigerclaw continually bullies him, as do the two older and more experienced apprentices, Sandpaw andDustpaw. Graypaw stays by Firepaw's side all the time and they become best friends. Ravenpaw also becomes their friend, overcoming some of his timidness, but Tigerclaw, his taunting mentor, is still a big target of his nervousness.
Firepaw catches on very fast to everything he is taught, and soon is recognized as a natural warrior with leadership skills, gaining knowledge of Clan routines and heritage.
Later, Firepaw encounters a ShadowClan cat named Yellowfang, who is now living as a rogue since being unfairly driven out by Brokenstar, ShadowClan's cruel leader. They battle, and Firepaw wins, injuring Yellowfang's leg in the process. Instead of turning her over to Bluestar, Firepaw feeds her before feeding his own Clan. After they both have eaten, they are caught by a ThunderClan patrol, which takes Yellowfang into custody. Firepaw's punishment for breaking the Warrior Code is to care for the grumpy former medicine cat.
It becomes apparent to Firepaw that Ravenpaw, his timid friend, is in grave danger and cannot stay with ThunderClan, when he eavesdrops on Tigerclaw, Darkstripe, and Longtail's conversation about Ravenpaw being a traitor. Firepaw and Graypaw help him escape and live with a loner, Barley, spreading the rumor that their fellow apprentice had died.
Firepaw is shocked and hurt when ThunderClan's medicine cat, Spottedleaf, is murdered by Clawface, a ShadowClan warrior. It is apparent he liked the she-cat, although he knew it was against the warrior code to do so, as medicine cats are not allowed to have mates. Later it is revealed that they both were in love with each other.
Later, Bluestar sends Firepaw and Graypaw into ShadowClan territory to find and question Yellowfang and attempt to recover the stolen ThunderClan kits; BrackenkitCinderkitThornkit and Brightkit. It is later realized that Yellowfang didn't murder Spottedleaf like expected, but Clawface, one of Brokenstar's followers did. Following the successful mission, Bluestar grants Firepaw the name Fireheart and the status of a warrior along with Graypaw, who becomes Graystripe.
As he starts his vigil, he notices Tigerclaw's eyes shining back at him. He then reveals silently that he had made an enemy out of the Clan deputy, as Tigerclaw did the same for him.

Fire and Ice

At the start of the book, Fireheart dreams about a screeching cat, but he is quickly awoken.
Fireheart and Graystripe are sent by Bluestar to find WindClan, who has been driven from their land by ShadowClan. The missing Clan is found and returned, with help from Ravenpaw, as he let the Clan shelter in his barn through the rain. They are then accompanied back to ThunderClan territory by two WindClan cats,Onewhisker and Deadfoot. Fireheart, Graystripe and the two WindClan cats are caught trespassing onRiverClan territory, and a fight brews. During the battle, a RiverClan warrior named Whiteclaw falls to his death at the bottom of the gorge. This death is blamed on Graystripe, who had been battling Whiteclaw, but had tried to catch his falling enemy. During the fight, Fireheart saves Sandpaw from falling over the side of the gorge. She snaps at him, not noticing how close she came to death, telling him that she could fight her own battles. Afterwards, she realizes what he did, and slowly begins to warm up to him.
When the pair arrive back at camp, Fireheart is given his first apprentice, a she-cat named Cinderpaw, one of the kits he had previously rescued from ShadowClan. Graystripe also is given an apprentice, Cinderpaw's brother, Brackenpaw.
On a training session, Fireheart spots a familiar kittypet. When Cinderpaw says that they should drive her away, Fireheart purposely steps on a twig to scare the kittypet away. Fireheart comes to the realization that the pregnant she-cat they saw is Fireheart's sister, Princess. Fireheart starts to visit her and tells her about his life as a warrior.
One day, Graystripe and his apprentice, Brackenpaw, go hunting with Fireheart and Cinderpaw near the frozen river. When Graystripe begins to stalk a vole across the river, the ice shatters beneath him. A RiverClan she-cat ends up saving him, introducing herself as Silverstream. This leads Graystripe to fall in love with her, and the two begin meeting secretly, much to Fireheart's annoyance. The two friends begin fighting, and soon stop speaking to one another.
Fireheart fetches as much catnip as he can to help Yellowfang during a bout of greencough that threatens the camp and takes one of Bluestar's lives. After he delievers the catnip to Yellowfang, he goes out to find Cinderpaw, who is gravely injured from a monster on the Thunderpath. He spills out all his worries to Princess, whom suggests that it might be a trap that Tigerclaw set up for Bluestar.
While hunting, Fireheart decides to visit Princess, whom he knows is close to kitting. Princess gives him her first-born son, Cloudkit, to take back to ThunderClan, and to be raised as a Clan cat. Fireheart had told Princess all about his life in the Clan, and after hearing that Cinderpaw had been hit by a monster, she wants Cloudkit to be his new apprentice. When Fireheart arrives back at camp, the Clan is furious to see that he has brought a kittypet to their Clan. Graystripe speaks up in Fireheart's defense, and Bluestar decides to let the kit stay with ThunderClan. Brindleface, a ThunderClan queen who had lost one of her kits, decides to care for Cloudkit.
When Brokenstar, the former leader of ShadowClan returns with a group of rogues, Fireheart is the only fully trained warrior in the camp. While Fireheart is fighting, he sees Clawface and starts battling him fiercely because he killed Spottedleaf. Graystripe then kills him. The handful of able fighters manages to drive the rogues away, and Brokenstar is blinded by Yellowfang during the battle, thus unable to make his escape. Bluestar decides that the Clan would have mercy and keep him as a prisoner rather than slaying a helpless cat, and she changes his name to Brokentail. Fireheart tells Bluestar about Sandpaw's and Dustpaw's strength and courage in the battle. After this, Sandpaw and Dustpaw receive their warrior names: Sandstorm and Dustpelt.
When RiverClan and ShadowClan ally to attack WindClan, ThunderClan warriors are sent to aid them. During the battle Fireheart permits Silverstream, Graystripe's forbidden lover, to escape. Darkstripe sees this and quickly tells Tigerclaw, who views it as a defect in Fireheart's loyalty. After the battle, Graystripe thanks Fireheart for not attacking Silverstream and the two quickly rekindle their friendship.

Forest of Secrets

After one of the Gatherings, Fireheart and Graystripe sneak away to WindClan territory to find Ravenpaw, and confirm his story of the death of Redtail. When they find him, they question him about what he saw during the battle where Redtail was killed. Ravenpaw explains the story once more, and that Oakheart died from a rock fall, not killed by Redtail, but it was partly his responsibility that he died. Ravenpaw also mentions that Oakheart was fiercely protective of Stonefur before he died, hissing at Redtail when he attacked Stonefur. Fireheart is confused, saying that there are battles all the time. They eat mice, and when returning to camp, Tigerclaw sees them and comments that they have no fresh kill. Fireheart lies that they ate to kept their strength up. Tigerclaw refuses to believe that and takes the pair to Bluestar. She is disappointed and orders them to hunt until sunhigh the next day.
Fireheart wants a RiverClan warrior to confirm Oakheart's death, one who had been there. He speaks his fears to Graystripe, who tells him that there is a warrior that he can speak to. Fireheart guesses that it is Silverstream, while Graystripe nods his approval.
The next day, in RiverClan territory, Fireheart and Graystripe hide until they reach the camp. They spot Silverstream with Blackclaw and his apprentice, and Silverstream tells him that she's going to look for a mouse in the bushes. Blackclaw gives a mew of approval before racing in the bushes. Graystripe explains Fireheart's fears to Silverstream, and then she gets Mistyfoot to speak to them. Fireheart learns that Oakheart was Mistyfoot and Stonefur's father, and Graypool was their mother, but it still didn't explain why Oakheart had warned Redtail that no ThunderClan warrior would ever harm Stonefur. Mistyfoot tells Fireheart that Graypool can meet him and Graystripe on the half-bridge the next day. Fireheart agrees and he takes off with Graystripe. The next day they reach the half-bridge. He and Graystripe see Graypool appearing with Mistyfoot and Silverstream, complaining it is too cold to go out in the weather. Silverstream replies that it is nonsense, and that it was a warm day. Graypool later sees Fireheart and Graystripe and exclaims that there were ThunderClan warriors here, and she could rip their fur out. When Fireheart explains he was only here to talk, Graypool shoos Silverstream, Mistyfoot, and Graystripe away. Fireheart explains the story about Oakheart's death. Graypool tells Fireheart that she isn't the pair's mother; a ThunderClan cat was. She tells him that Oakheart found two kits in the snow, and the two scraps wouldn't see sunrise if it wasn't for her. She suckled them, and then noticed there was a scent underneath their snowy coats - ThunderClan. Fireheart thanks Graypool for explaining it all then goes back to camp with Graystripe.
While on the patrol at the RiverClan border, they see the flood and how horrible it is. They also see two kits struggling on a bundle of sticks and Twoleg rubbish. They rescue the kits and are spotted by a RiverClan patrol. Graystripe and Fireheart are astonished by how the flood waters caused so much damage that they had to move their camp. Leopardfur takes them to Crookedstar, who makes Fireheart and Graystripe explain the story. Though Blackclaw is hostile towards them and accuses them of trying to steal the kits. Crookedstar slowly believes the ThunderClan cats, with Graypool's help. Fireheart and Graystripe persuade RiverClan to let them catch ThunderClan prey and help RiverClan's starvation, as Graypool explained that they were nearly dying from hunger.
A few days later, Fireheart wakes Graystripe up and reminds him they need to go hunting for RiverClan. Cloudkit follows them out of camp, but Fireheart catches him in time. Graystripe remarks hotly, "Why does your kin have to show up at the weirdest times, Fireheart?" Cloudkit wonders where they're going, and Fireheart replies that they're going on a special warrior mission. Graystripe adds that it isn't for pesky kits. Instead of following them, Cloudkit scampers back to the nursery.
They hunt for RiverClan and take the prey to them. Stonefur welcomes them and tells Graystripe to take prey to the queens, and tells Fireheart to take prey to the elders. Fireheart meets back up with his friend after giving his prey to the elders, and figures out that Silverstream is expecting Graystripe's kits. Fireheart is uneasy and scared, but Graystripe is enthusiastic and happy about it. When Fireheart and Graystripe return to camp, Tigerclaw finds them with Cloudkit at his side, learning that Cloudkit boasted about everything to the deputy. He goes to the leader's den with Tigerclaw, Cloudkit, and Graystripe. Bluestar is extremely disappointed with them, and tells Cloudkit he can continue with his elder duties. Cloudkit doesn't seem to mind, as he likes caring for the elders. The blue-gray leader punishes the pair of warriors by making them apprentices for a half-moon once more, including sleeping in the apprentices' den, responsible for the elders; with Longtail to supervise their first hunting session.
Silverstream gives birth to Graystripe's kits at Sunningrocks, with Fireheart running to summon Cinderpaw, the new medicine cat apprentice. Though Silverstream dies, Graystripe's two kits, Featherkit and Stormkit, survive. Cinderpaw blames herself for the death of Silverstream.
When Bluestar is checking on the nursery, Bluestar explains to Fireheart that she is the mother of Mistyfoot and Stonefur. Fireheart is shocked as he learns the story how Bluestar had given up her kits to save ThunderClan from Thistleclaw. She had three kits, one had died because of extreme cold, the other two living in RiverClan.
While Fireheart takes out Cloudpaw, who has been named his apprentice, Cloudpaw is very scared and points that Tigerclaw is leading a patrol of rogues directly to ThunderClan's camp. The two cats follow him, then realize that this was why he sent all those patrols, and sent Fireheart to watch Cloudpaw, to plan an attack on ThunderClan with Brokentail and his old allies. Fireheart stops Tigerclaw from killing Bluestar and finally exposes his treachery. Tigerclaw is exiled from ThunderClan by orders of Bluestar. As he leaves, he threatens Fireheart's life. To Fireheart's and the Clan's astonishment, Bluestar makes Fireheart deputy, instead of an older warrior. However, she violates the warrior code in that she named her new deputy after moonhigh. Many believe this is a bad omen, and are skeptical about their new deputy.
Graystripe admits that Fireheart is right. He can't leave his kits in another Clan, so he goes with the RiverClan patrol, which includes Mistyfoot, Silverstream's cousin and best friend, to RiverClan to stay.

Rising Storm

Fireheart struggles with his deputy duties, much to the amusement of Darkstripe. Fireheart is also still mentoring Cloudpaw, who is being difficult. Bluestar is still traumatized from the disloyalty of Tigerclaw, to the point where she is barely eating.
Fireheart and Bluestar attempt to travel to Highstones. On the way, they are stopped by a WindClan patrol led by Mudclaw. The WindClan warriors do not let them pass, and eventually, Fireheart and Bluestar return to camp. The Clan is outraged, and they demand to know why Fireheart allowed the WindClan patrol to turn them back. Fireheart responds with a challenge of his own, asking, "Would you have risked your leader's safety?"
Two ShadowClan warriors, Littlecloud and Whitethroat, come into ThunderClan territory, pleading for help. ShadowClan has fallen ill, and Nightstar is dying. Yellowfang tells Bluestar to send the warriors away, because they have a dangerous disease with no known cure, and desperately reminds Bluestar that it had not been long since greencough had taken one of her lives. Fireheart and Sandstorm escort the ShadowClan warriors to the Thunderpath, where they find the tunnel under the Thunderpath inside of ShadowClan's territory. Bluestar tells him and Sandstorm not to inform the clan about the tunnel. Fireheart soon finds out that Cinderpelt has been taking care of Whitethroat and Littlecloud, despite Bluestar sending them away. He tells her that the ShadowClan cats must leave the territory.
A patrol comes back with battle wounds. Runningwind, who is part of the patrol, does not return. Fireheart returns to the scene of the attack, not knowing that Tigerclaw had led rogues to attack ThunderClan. Fireheart chases Whitethroat onto the Thunderpath, where he is hit by a monster. Tigerclaw attacks. Fireheart defeats him with the help of Stonefur's patrol, Tigerclaw then tells Fireheart that he will kill ThunderClan warriors one by one.
Cloudpaw has been traveling to a Twoleg nest everyday, getting food from the Twolegs. When Fireheart finds out, he tells him to stop, but the apprentice refuses to listen, not understanding how far he was breaking the Warrior Code. Fireheart and Sandstorm follow him on one of his "outings," and helplessly watch as the Twolegs put Cloudpaw in a cage, and take him away in a monster. Fireheart says that he has lost everyone important to him in his Clan, and Sandstorm, who apparently has feelings for him, says that she had thought she had mattered to him, but that she must have been wrong. Fireheart feels bad, because the two had been growing very close. He apologizes at the fresh-kill pile, and is embarrassed to realize that his interactions with Sandstorm have been an interest to his Clan.
Soon after, Ravenpaw visits ThunderClan, but as he traveled through the forest to ThunderClan's camp, he is attacked by Fireheart, Sandstorm, and Brightpaw, who had not recognized Ravenpaw at first. Ravenpaw tells Fireheart that he found a white kittypet that was lost, and smelled of ThunderClan. Fireheart sends Brightpaw back to camp to tell Whitestorm where he has gone, and Ravenpaw takes Fireheart and Sandstorm to the Twoleg Nest. On the way, they are chased by some dogs. Sandstorm becomes suspicious of Ravenpaw, questioning whether or not he was leading them into a trap. Fireheart thinks that her fears are ridiculous, and he continues to follow Ravenpaw to Cloudpaw's Twoleg Nest. There, they rescued Cloudpaw from his captivity. On the way back to camp, they are attacked by Mudclaw, his apprentice, Webpaw, and the WindClan deputy, Deadfoot. After the battle, Fireheart brings Cloudpaw to camp, and asks Bluestar if he can stay. Bluestar agrees, and Fireheart suggests that Darkstripe tell the Clan that Cloudpaw will stay, as Darkstripe had been the cat to protest. Bluestar seems disturbed by his coming, but tells him that Darkstripe will tell the Clan.
Later that night, Fireheart is woken up by the smell of fire and alerts his Clan of the danger. When everyone is evacuating, they realize that Bramblekit is missing, along with Patchpelt and Halftail. He and Yellowfang return to camp and find Bramblekit stuck in a burning tree. Fireheart rescues him, and the tree falls, separating him from Yellowfang. He drags Patchpelt to the river, hoping to save him, but the elderly tom dies. They take shelter in the RiverClan camp. The next day, he and Graystripe go back to camp. Fireheart finds Yellowfang dying. Yellowfang tells him that she killed her son, Brokentail, not knowing that he already knew this. She asks Fireheart to thank Bluestar for allowing her to stay in ThunderClan, and admits that she wishes that Fireheart was her son. She dies shortly after this.
At the end of the book, Fireheart takes his Clanmates to the gathering, because Bluestar had refused to go. When they arrive, they find that Nightstar had died, along with his deputy, Cinderfur. This confuses Fireheart, as Nightstar only received his nine lives and name at the Moonstone a few moons ago. When the new ShadowClan leader finally arrives, Fireheart is horrified to find that Tigerclaw is ShadowClan's new leader.

A Dangerous Path

Several hunting and border patrols find remains of rabbits and fresh-kill, along with evidence of a dog by Snakerocks. Bluestar believes it is WindClan, despite Fireheart's warnings that it is actually a dog. She plans to attack, but Fireheart comes up with a plan to divert the battle behind Bluestar's back, by traveling to WindClan to speak with Tallstar and ask him to have a peaceful meeting with Bluestar to work things out between the two rival Clans. He asks WindClan to have Ravenpaw be the messenger to ThunderClan from WindClan. When he tells the rest of the warriors about what he has done, and asks for their help, most of them are angry, including Sandstorm, who even asks Dustpelt to tell him what a stupid idea that was, but to Fireheart's dismay he agrees with his plan.
The apprentices Cloudpaw, Brightpaw, Swiftpaw, and Thornpaw are long overdue for their warrior ceremony, but when Fireheart asks Bluestar about it, she says that only Cloudpaw will be made a warrior, as all the others' mentors are "traitors." Fireheart tries to convince her to rethink it, but she remains stubborn, and soon holds Cloudpaw's warrior ceremony, naming him Cloudtail.
Two apprentices, Brightpaw and Swiftpaw, devise a plan to rid the Clan the problem of the dog at Snakerocks and tells it to AshpawFernpaw, and Thornpaw. Swiftpaw says that if they get rid of it, Bluestar will notice them, and they'll be made warriors. In the end, the only ones to go through with it are Brightpaw and Swiftpaw. But what they find at Snakerocks isn't just a dog; it's a whole pack of them. Fireheart learns from Fernpaw the following morning where the missing apprentices went, and Cloudtail swears to "shred anything that's hurt Brightpaw." When they got there, they noticed Swiftpaw was killed, and Brightpaw was badly injured, as Cinderpelt was unable to save her eye and ear, and she was terribly scarred.
When the time comes for Bramblekit and Tawnykit to become apprentices, Fireheart asks Bluestar to choose mentors for them, but she tells him to choose. He chooses to be Bramblekit's mentor himself, and Brackenfur to mentor Tawnykit, even though Sandstorm was the obvious choice. She is furious at him for this and makes it a point to ignore him afterward. Fireheart cannot tell Sandstorm why he chose Brackenfur as Tawnykit's mentor: he wishes to protect her from Tigerstar, as he is afraid that the ShadowClan leader will harm the mentors of his kits.
Fireheart finds out that Tigerstar is feeding a pack of wild dogs, who had killed Swiftpaw earlier in the book, and at the same time brutally injured Brightpaw. They find a trail of killed rabbits leading to the ThunderClan camp as Tigerstar's bait for the dogs, and at the end of the trail, the queen Brindleface, brutally murdered to give the dogs a taste for cat blood. Cloudtail is outraged when he discovers this, claiming he would flay Tigerstar, and scatter his entrails from the ThunderClan camp to Highstones. Tigerstar's intention was for the dogs to devour the ThunderClan cats after learning to like cat blood. Fireheart and a few other cats attempt to break the trail up, but the blood has already stained the ground and the dogs are still surely going to come to the camp, so they give the call to evacuate. Every cat except for a select few, Fireheart being one of them, leaves for Sunningrocks. Fireheart tells them to "Climb a tree as soon as you get there." Before they leave to get rid of the wild dogs, Fireheart reveals to Sandstorm his love for her.
At the end of the book, while Fireheart is trying to get the wild dog pack to go over the gorge, Tigerstar stops him and pins Fireheart down. Bluestar shows up and knocks the dog that is attacking Fireheart over the edge of the gorge along with herself. Fireheart tries to save her by jumping in after her, but he almost drowns. Mistyfoot and Stonefur appear and, since they are RiverClan cats and swim well, help Fireheart carry Bluestar up on to the bank where the ThunderClan leader shares tongues with her children one last time. Bluestar dies, but not before telling Fireheart that he is indeed the fire that was prophesied to save ThunderClan. After his leader's death, Fireheart looks at Graystripe. Graystripe dips his head in the deepest respect, and Fireheart is horrified because he realizes he is now the leader of ThunderClan, and has lost the easy friendship he shared with Graystripe.

The Darkest Hour

After Bluestar's death, he travels to the Moonstone with Cinderpelt for his leadership ceremony. He receives his first two lives from Lionheart (courage) and Redtail (justice). Then he thanks Fireheart for "Revealing the truth when no other cat could." His next four were from Silverstream (loyalty to what is right), Runningwind (energy), Brindleface (protection), and then Swiftpaw (mentoring). Fireheart apologizes to Swiftpaw; however he is seen as having no anger in his eyes, only "wisdom beyond his age." The ceremony then continues, and Fireheart receives his next two lives from Yellowfang (compassion) and Spottedleaf (love). She then tells Fireheart to "use it for the cats in your care -- especially Sandstorm," confirming that his love for Sandstorm and they becoming mates was okay with her. His final life is given to him by Bluestar, and with her life she gives him nobility, certainty, and faith. Once Firestar receives his leader name, the ceremony is interrupted with chanting and by a pile of cat and prey bones rising out of the ground. Bluestar then gives him this prophecy: "Four will become two, Lion and Tiger will meet in battle, and Blood will rule the forest."
Then blood flows out of the hill and he thinks he is going to be swept away by the rushing current. When he wakes up he imagines that he can still smell the stench of blood. On their way back they stop at the barn where Barley and Ravenpaw live and catch a few mice.
He gets back and Brackenfur wildly apologizes to him because he let Darkstripe, whom he was watching, out of his sight when Sorrelkit was fed the deathberries. Later, he exiles Darkstripe for his betrayal to ThunderClan, when he tried to kill Sorrelkit with deathberries after she had tracked him meeting up withBlackfoot, the ShadowClan deputy. Cloudtail complains about the cruelty of Lostface's name and asks if it could be changed. Firestar asks if that is possible and is told by Cloudtail if he thinks that Halftail and One-eye were born with those names, he's crazy. Firestar then goes to One-eye and is told how to perform the name-changing ceremony. Later, he renames Lostface as Brightheart.
Firestar and Sandstorm are apparent mates now. Though it is not directly stated until later books, Cinderpelt is in love with the ginger leader, though he never knows. She seems to flare up at Sandstorm a few times, but eventually the two warm up and become great friends.
Meanwhile, Tigerstar, leader of ShadowClan, tries to unite all four of the original Clans to form TigerClan. OnlyLeopardstar joins him, showing bad judgment as a leader. Tigerstar also brings BloodClan into the forest. He brings Scourge and BloodClan to a Gathering.
Scourge believes that Tigerstar is just a normal Clan leader, but then Firestar reveals to all the Clans, including BloodClan, Tigerstar's treachery, and Scourge then rips all of the ShadowClan leader's lives away when Tigerstar acts like Scourge is under his control.
Suddenly, Firestar realizes that Scourge is the real enemy. After wondering for a while what Scourge's weaknesses in battle are, Barley and Ravenpaw come to ThunderClan. Barley then tells him that he used to be a member of BloodClan, and that it was not a Clan at all, really, just a gang of vicious cats who fight for their own survival. Then Barley tells Firestar that Scourge's weakness is that he doesn't believe in StarClan. At first, Firestar is confused, until Barley explains that Scourge has one life, while Firestar has nine. Then, Firestar realizes how he can beat Scourge. He then convinces RiverClan's leader, Leopardstar and ShadowClan's leader, Blackfoot to join LionClan in the fight against BloodClan. They both agree, and the battle preparations began. He decides to teach the kits basic self-defense moves, and while training them, Sandstorm mentions how she would love to be Sorrelkit's mentor.
On the day of the battle, Firestar declines Scourge's offer, and the battle commences. Darkstripe is killed by Graystripe, and then that causes them to notice that Whitestorm is injured heavily by Bone, and Firestar rushes to his side. Whitestorm then tells Firestar that he knew he wanted Graystripe as his deputy. He then names Graystripe the new deputy, and when he asks if he's sure, Firestar responds, "Never surer."
Once he finds Scourge, the two begin battling. Scourge delivers a mortal blow to Firestar, causing him to lose the first of his nine lives. He is then met by Bluestar and Whitestorm, who inform him of his lost life. He then sees a faint outline of himself among the starry masses. Once he has healed, he goes back after Scourge. Scourge is blown away, as he believed Firestar to be dead. Firestar ends up killing Scourge, effectively ending the battle and ensuring peace in the forest at last.

In the New Prophecy Arc

Midnight

Mentioned by Cloudtail after Brambleclaw receives his dream from Bluestar, Cloudtail complains that Brambleclaw was muttering in his sleep, rudely comparing him to Firestar.
He then gives Sorreltail her long-deserved warrior name at sunset, as the stars were coming out. Right after the ceremony, he goes up to Brambleclaw, telling him he hunted well that day. Suddenly, he asks Brambleclaw is he misses Tawnypelt. Brambleclaw replies that he does, and Firestar says that he understands, since he realizes how close Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw are. He also admits that he misses Princess, too. He then leaves, and Brambleclaw wonders whether to tell him about the prophecy, but decides not to, since Firestar didn't receive anything.
He orders Thornclaw, Brambleclaw, and Ashfur to patrol Snakerocks. Squirrelpaw goes with them and they discover a badger's nest near Snakerocks. When the patrol tells Firestar, he decides to keep a watch out for it.
Squirrelpaw gets punished for leaving with them and she has to serve Speckletail. Speckletail tells her stories about when Firestar was a young apprentice. During the Gathering, Firestar speaks first, telling the Clans about Sorrelpaw getting her warrior name, Sorreltail. He congratulates Hawkfrost for becoming a warrior.
He wants to check the border between ShadowClan, but Brambleclaw contradicts him, saying that they should check the border with WindClan, instead. Firestar stops to listen, and slowly agrees, sending the cats off to the border of WindClan.
Ravenpaw comes to visit Firestar, warning him about different monsters nearing the forest. Firestar receives the prophecy about the fire and the tiger from Cinderpelt and Leafpaw, he tries to keep Brambleclaw and Squirrelpaw away from each other. He is rather harsh on them, ordering them to go on patrol, or to gather moss for the elders. He tries hard, for he thinks danger would come to the Clan if they were together.
After many attempts to keep the two cats away from each other, he fails. Firestar is very stressed out after their disappearance, and sends many patrols out to find the two. He often thought that he shouldn't have kept them apart from each other. He often blames himself that Squirrelpaw and Brambleclaw have gone missing. Sandstorm reveals that the fire might not have meant the end of the clan, but it could have meant that Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight would work to keep the forest from danger. Firestar nods in approval, understanding, and waits patiently for them to return.
At the end of the book, Firestar and a couple other cats witness one of the first monsters that traveled away from the Thunderpath, and sent the first damage to ThunderClan territory by running over a tree.

Moonrise

Firestar starts to become more and more worried about many things. Firestar is worried about the Twolegconstruction, and is afraid that the forest has become too dangerous to live in. The forest is becoming a bad place for ThunderClan to live in, and the monsters are destroying more of the Clan's territory. Firestar is also very worried about his daughter, Squirrelpaw, who had left with Brambleclaw, without telling anyone where they went. Graystripe helps the troubled leader cope with the disappearance, because Graystripe knows what it was like to live without a loved one. His other daughter, Leafpaw is trapped by Twolegs, while Sorreltail is powerless to help.

Dawn

In the prologue, Firestar is seen padding beside Sandstorm, who asks if he thinks their daughters would find their way home. Firestar flinches, but says that they could only pray they would. When Sandstorm asksGraystripe if they would manage to find them, the tom says they would. Growling, Firestar demands how he could be so sure. He suggests sending another patrol to search for Leafpaw. Sandstorm mentions thatThunderClan had lost so many cats through the current moon, causing Firestar's gaze to harden as the wind carries her voice. He says that the other Clans may agree to join together to face the Twoleg threat.
As Dustpelt objects, Firestar insists the no Clan would order the others, reasoning that leaf-bare was close and that ThunderClan couldn't fight it alone. Suddenly, a roar echoes through the four oaks of Fourtrees, and Firestar slows down. When Graystripe yowls that something was happening at Fourtrees, Firestar leads his Clan to the steep-sided hollow. After the oaks are cut down, Sandstorm murmurs that there was no hope. Firestar's eyes glint as he reassures his mate to have courage. He turns to face his clan and says that they still have their clan and there is always hope.
When the monsters are moving too near to the ThunderClan camp, Firestar has to move the Clan to Sunningrocks. Then, Squirrelpaw and Brambleclaw return from the Great Journey, and, though he is overjoyed to see them, he is not completely sure about their idea of leaving.
Firestar is devastated when he finds out his friend, Graystripe, was captured by Twolegs, but his grieving is interrupted by Tawnypelt, who begs them to help save ShadowClan when their camp is being terrorized by monsters, and he brings some of his cats to help. Soon after beginning of their trek, Firestar sees a tree falling near Onewhisker, so he pushes him out of the way along with some ShadowClan kits. Though he saves others' lives, that does not prevent him from losing yet another life, leaving him only six. Firestar allows ShadowClan to stay with ThunderClan until it is time to leave. Firestar helps the Clans leave the forest and remains optimistic during most of the journey.

Starlight

When the cats are at the lake, Firestar makes his daughter, Squirrelpaw, into a warrior, Squirrelflight. Onewhisker, along with Firestar and Brambleclaw, is told that he is to become deputy just before Tallstar'sdeath. Barkface arrives soon after and believes that what the ThunderClan cats say about Onewhisker is true. Firestar tells WindClan about their new leader for Onewhisker in fear that no one would believe him.
On the night Mudclaw revolts, Firestar brings help to WindClan, and helps to drive away Mudclaw and his attempt to overthrow Onewhisker. He wrenches his shoulder, because he was battling two cats at once.

Twilight

ThunderClan seem to be settling in alright. Firestar has still not appointed a deputy, with the faint hope that Graystripe may still be alive. ThunderClan has problems on their border with WindClan, though. Blackstar can't seem to contain his warriors, as it is ShadowClan that is the problem.
Firestar is also worried about Onestar and how his Clan are getting along. He sends some cats over to ask how they were doing, only to be told that Onestar can deal with his own Clan and their problems alone.
One night, badgers attack the camp as payback for them driving them out. Firestar fights alongside every warrior, and almost loses the fight. He would have lost, if it weren't for WindClan, who send a few warriors to help. This act loosens some of the tension between Firestar and Onestar. His daughter, Leafpool, and her forbidden love, Crowfeather, also come back to ThunderClan to fight the badgers. Firestar grieves for his former apprentice, Cinderpelt, when she dies protecting a kitting Sorreltail from the badgers.

Sunset

After a long convincing by Sandstorm, Brambleclaw, and Stormfur, Firestar has to accept Graystripe's death and move on. He is close to appointing Brackenfur as his deputy, until Leafpool approaches him and tells him about her dream that Brambleclaw would protect the Clan. Firestar then names Brambleclaw his deputy, stating that he would mentor Berrykit when the kit was six moons old.
After Stormfur and Brook are exiled from RiverClan, Brambleclaw takes them back to the ThunderClan camp, thus sparking an argument about whether the former tribe cats should stay in ThunderClan or leave. Finally, Firestar snaps that the meeting is over and retreats to his den. At first Brambleclaw is shocked because Firestar never snaps out orders, but then Brambleclaw decides that it is because he must feel some loyalty to his lost friend, Graystripe, so he has taken in his son, or another possibility is because of Firestar's kittypet heritage.
Firestar later gets caught in a fox trap when he is told by Birchpaw that Blackstar was on ThunderClan territory. It turns out to be a trap from Hawkfrost, who wants Brambleclaw to kill Firestar and become leader. Brambleclaw refuses and digs up the end of the trap, killing his half brother in the process. Firestar thanks Brambleclaw for showing his loyalty to the Clan and for not killing him.

In the Power of Three Arc

The Sight

Firestar's duties continue as he witnesses the apprenticeship of his grandchildren, HollykitLionkit, andJaykit. Firestar is the only one who knows that these three kits have the power of the stars in their paws.
Although his grandson, Jaypaw, is blind, he allows him to train as a warrior. When Hollypaw wants to quit being a medicine cat apprentice and train as a warrior, at the same time Jaypaw wants to leave his apprentice life behind, Firestar is skeptical that it wasn't planned, but goes along with it and allows Hollypaw to train as a warrior and Jaypaw as a medicine cat. He assigns Brackenfur as Hollypaw's mentor rather than Jaypaw's warrior mentor, Brightheart.
After many moons, Firestar's best friend, Graystripe, finds his way back to the Clans with his new mate,Millie. Even though he is pleased to see his friend, Firestar must choose who will be ThunderClan's deputy. After a long decision, his daughter, Leafpool, and his grandson, Jaypaw tell him that Brambleclaw should remain deputy. He realizes that that decision is probably for the best because Brambleclaw has been around their new territory longer and knows what is going on in the Clan.
When Jaypaw tells Firestar and Sandstorm of Tallstar's warning to Barkface about the dogs, Firestar ignores his warning, telling him that StarClan could be telling them to keep the look out for dogs, not take WindClan's territory.

Dark River

Near the beginning of the book, Hollypaw tells Berrypaw to only look at RiverClan territory, and not to hunt, and Graystripe teases Firestar by telling him that Hollypaw was competing with him for leadership. Firestar tells Graystripe that he doesn't have to worry until she's bigger.
Firestar reports at the Gathering that ThunderClan was doing well, and asks Leopardstar if she had news to share. She says that there was no news to share and that RiverClan was well, and Firestar told her he was happy to hear that.
When Leafpool tells Firestar that she had a dream about RiverClan, he asks if ThunderClan was mentioned in it, but she said no. Firestar asks her if there was any clear sign of what RiverClan's problem was, but Leafpool said no. Firestar tells her and Jaypaw that if RiverClan needs help they can ask ThunderClan when they need it, instead of trying to help them.
When Leafpool tried to get him to help, he gets angry at her, and tells her that Onestar has probably had enough of their meddling, and Blackstar looking to get even with ThunderClan. He says that he's only made ThunderClan the resentment and jealousy of the other Clans. Firestar holds a meeting to give Millie her warrior name, but Millie declines, saying that she wants to keep her name. Firestar accepts it, although the Clan doesn't, and he tells them all that it shouldn't matter if they have a warrior name or not, but the fact that they are loyal to their Clan. Hollypaw says that Brambleclaw should've spoken out, but Squirrelflight tells her that Brambleclaw is the deputy, which means he should support Firestar since he is the Clan leader, and she reminds her that Firestar once was a kittypet.
After Cinderpaw breaks her leg, Jaypaw tells Hollypaw to see Firestar because he must want to know what happened to Cinderpaw. A border patrol tells Firestar that WindClan almost crossed their border. Firestar tells them that if there is no scent of them across the border or any cats crossing over the border, then they should all just leave it alone.
At the next Gathering, Firestar doesn't mention WindClan's thieving and ThunderClan thinks he's scared. When Hollypaw sees that something was wrong with RiverClan, she asks Firestar to send a patrol to check on the Clan, but he refuses. Millie refuses her warrior name when he tries to give her one. Later, Onestar accuses him of stealing SedgekitThistlekit, and Swallowkit, not knowing that they were lost in the tunnels. He is relieved when the apprentices show up with the kits and stop the battle, thanking them deeply.

Outcast

In the beginning of the book, Firestar tells Lionpaw to rest since he worked hard all morning. He tells the border patrol to keep an eye out for WindClan, although things have been quiet since they found the missing kits. When Berrypaw tells everyone he passed his assessment, Brambleclaw says that it is up to Firestar to decide, and Firestar tells him that he'll gather the mentors and arrange the ceremony. Firestar gives Berrypaw, Hazelpaw and Mousepaw their warrior names, Berrynose, Hazeltail and Mousewhisker. Firestar goes on the evening patrol with Hollypaw and Brackenfur.
When Berrynose and Birchfall are caught crossing over ShadowClan border, Firestar tells Russetfur that it was a mistake and will not happen again. As punishment, Firestar makes the two do apprentice duties.
Firestar is later mentioned by Lionpaw when he is talking to Stormfur, where he says that he feels that he has to be better than all the other apprentices because he is Firestar's kin, and the other cats will expect him to be just as good as Firestar.
When Firestar finds two cats from the Tribe of Rushing Water, he welcomes them kindly and asks them to come and stay as long as they need to. He listens to the cats' story, and says it would be fine for Stormfur and Brook to go.
When Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight ask to go, he answers yes also, because those two cats know the Tribe better than any other cat, and the Tribe deserves help after what they did for the cats when they were journeying to the Lake. He also allows Jaypaw, Hollypaw, and Lionpaw to accompany the cats to the mountains.

Eclipse

Firestar is seen padding down from the highledge, along with Sandstorm. He gives Poppypaw and Honeypaw their warrior names, Poppyfrost and Honeyfern. He is also seen when he pulls Jaypaw out of the lake when he's trying to get his stick out of the water, then Firestar swims in to retrieve it himself. Firestar has some trouble with WindClan crossing the border. He tries to send some cats, but they are turned down by Ashfoot. Some cats want to fight, but he says no blood will be shed unless there has to be. When WindClan attack, Firestar fights against them. The ThunderClan leader directs his Clan into three patrols, himself leading one, to fight the three groups of WindClan. On his patrol, he finds the fox hole where WindClan was sneaking onto ThunderClan territory. He tells his warriors to cave in the hole, which started the fight by his patrol. At the end of the book, he gives two of his grandchildren and Cinderpaw their warrior names, hereby naming them Hollyleaf, Lionblaze, and Cinderheart.

Long Shadows

When Lionblaze is caught fighting with Ashfur for battle training, Firestar is angry about this and yells at them, telling Lionblaze that he is a warrior now, and doesn't need any more training, and that their fighting was much more violent than a regular practice session. He later becomes ill when greencough has spread around the camp. The catmint in ThunderClan territory dries out, so he leads the other cats that had caught the sickness go into the old Twoleg nest. Firestar loses a life from the sickness; this is thought to have left him with five lives left. When catmint is found, they all recover and those who can go back to camp. Millie and Briarkit are the last to recover from the greencough, but everyone returns to camp and gets back to normal. It is later revealed that Ashfur was the one that helped Hawkfrost try to kill Firestar, since he was the father of Squirrelflight.

Sunrise

Firestar is worried that Sol might not be Ashfur's killer and starts to wonder if he was right to send the patrol to the sun-drown place. Later, he asks Leafpool if she can try to speak with Ashfur in StarClan and ask him who his killer was, but he is disappointed when she tells him that she can only speak to him if Ashfur comes to speak with her, and it isn't her choice about which StarClan cat to speak to. When Hollyleaf tells the Clans about their true parents, he is very surprised and shocked, but takes control over the Clan, saying that they need to stay strong, despite all that has happened.

In the Omen of the Stars Arc

The Fourth Apprentice

In one of Jayfeather's prospects in the early chapters, Firestar loses a life when a fox attacked him. Jayfeather fears that the ThunderClan leader has lost his last life, but is relieved when he opens his eyes.
At the Gathering, Firestar reacts diplomatically to Leopardstar's claims that all the fish in the lake belong to RiverClan, saying that she wouldn't be able to do that, because she herself declared that the borders ended two tail-lengths from the shore. On the way home, he declares that ThunderClan will not attack any RiverClan cats patrolling the lake.
When Rainstorm is brought into camp, he, (though reluctantly) rejects Thornclaw's idea about keeping the RiverClan warrior as prisoner for extra fresh-kill, despite knowing how much food they did need. He then allows Rainstorm to stay in camp to rest before he is taken back across the lake by a patrol.
Later, Lionblaze convinces Firestar to send a patrol upstream to see if something is blocking the water, working off of Dovepaw's keen senses. He tells Firestar and everyone else that she had a dream from StarClan. Firestar agrees, and at the next Gathering proposes the idea to the other Clan leaders and gets them to agree with him. The next day, he announces to his Clan that Lionblaze and Dovepaw will go to represent ThunderClan.
He proudly welcomes the cats when they return, and briefly mourns the death of Rippletail when Lionblaze and Dovepaw report to him, but then is happy that they found the water.

Fading Echoes

Firestar apparently is now experimenting with many new training methods, such as asking Lionblaze and Cinderheart to teach Dovepaw and Ivypaw about climbing trees and hopping between them, as well as having apprentices practice hunting as pairs, and warriors practicing battle together in teams.
When Mistystar is on her way back from the Moonpool after receiving her nine lives, she stops to visit ThunderClan, and Firestar welcomes her as the new leader, as he is proud of Bluestar's daughter becoming leader.
After Dovepaw tries, along with Ivypaw, to check on Sedgewhisker in WindClan, and is brought back to camp, Firestar lectures both of them about keeping to their own Clan's business, and then takes Dovepaw, Lionblaze and Jayfeather aside. He reveals to them that he knows that they are the Three of the prophecy, but that he doesn't know anything more about the prophecy than they do, to their disappointment. He soon meets with the Three every so often, and asks them to report anything strange they see to him.
When ShadowClan scent is found on ThunderClan's side of the border, Firestar insists that they shouldn't make too much trouble over it, but says that he will mention it at the Gathering. When the Gathering comes, Blackstar says Firestar is falsely accusing ShadowClan, and that ThunderClan had been straying on ShadowClan's side of the border. He also declares that ThunderClan thought all the other Clans were indebted to them after the journey to find the water, when it had been an effort from all four Clans. Firestar and the rest of ThunderClan were angered by this, and tension escalates until the Gathering ends.
When Jayfeather is in StarClan with Yellowfang, he sees five of Firestar's lost lives. Yellowfang says that the spirits can not speak or hear now, but they will be able to once Firestar loses his final life.
When Ivypaw approaches Firestar telling him that she has had a dream that ShadowClan will try to take more of ThunderClan's territory after Firestar gave them the Clearing, he is skeptical at first. She is persistent, and eventually persuades him to fight ShadowClan over the piece of land. Firestar brings his Clan to battle, and they fight fiercely. At one point, Firestar is fighting Russetfur, and although Lionblaze pulls her off of him and accidentally kills her, he is badly injured and loses a life: leaving only three left.

Night Whispers

Firestar is first seen been dragged away at the end of the battle between ThunderClan and ShadowClan, a trail of blood behind him. He is seen numerous times but does not usually have a major part in any of the times he appears. Later, Lionblaze talks to Firestar about chasing after the fox by himself-Firestar reluctantly agrees, but also states that he must take Dovepaw with him, in case he needs help, or for necessary self-defense. He later challenges Blackstar at a Gathering about his forcing ThunderClan to give him catmint by imprisoning Ivypaw just for crossing the border. With ShadowClan not giving any answers, ThunderClan are forced to fend for themselves and give away the catmint. Firestar does not seem too entertained by this.

Sign of the Moon

He tries out a new assessment technique, pairing a warrior with a mentor, then assessing how the apprentice works hunting with a partner instead of hunting alone. After hearing of Icecloud's accident, he makes an announcement on the Highledge. Firestar addresses the Clan by assuring them that Icecloud will be okay, and that a barrier must be made around the hole. He also states that he will take a look at the hole for himself. Then, he asks for a report on the assessment of the apprentices. He then gives Dovepaw and Ivypaw their warrior names, naming them Dovewing and Ivypool.
Later, at the Gathering, he is described in Dovewing's perspective to be well muscled and sleek furred. Then Jayfeather comes to him to tell him about going to the Tribe. He declines and then is persuaded into it. He lets Dovewing go, but not Lionblaze, saying if there was a battle Lionblaze would be their best shot. Also he says to take Squirrelflight and Foxleap.
Later, Lionblaze mentions that it was Firestar's idea to go training in the nighttime, because Firestar wanted his Clan to have training in different ways.

The Forgotten Warrior

Firestar first appears as he is conversing with Brambleclaw, Thornclaw, and Brightheart. He comments to Brambleclaw about the current peace between the Clans.
After a fight almost breaks out between ThunderClan and WindClan patrols, Sorreltail frantically informs Firestar of the situation. Firestar calms the Clan and assures Birchfall and Ivypool, two of the cats who were involved, that they have not broken the warrior code.
Not long after the incident with WindClan, Firestar decides that it is time for Cherrykit and Molekit to become apprentices, as there has been a shortage. When Molekit tries to object, saying that Firestar only wants him to do the "nasty jobs," the Clan leader only remains amused.
Molepaw and Cherrypaw claim that a mysterious cat rescued them from a fox. Firestar ensures them that he will ask the other warriors if they have seen anything suspicious.
At the Gathering, Onestar accuses Firestar of conspiring an attack on WindClan. Firestar furiously objects, asking whether or not Onestar or any of his warriors can identify the cats they supposedly saw on the border. Eventually, he wins the argument.
Brambleclaw and Lionblaze discuss Onestar's outburst with Firestar. Lionblaze points out that WindClan might be right, reminding them of the cat Cherrypaw and Molepaw claimed to have seen. Firestar agrees and allows him to track down the intruder.
When Sol returns, Firestar curtly allows him to stay the night. At first, the ThunderClan leader disapproved of Sol's sudden presence, but he feels to required to let him stay once Poppyfrost and Berrynose thank Sol for saving their kits. It is clear that Firestar does not trust him.
Brambleclaw claims that Sol is going to betray the Clan, though Firestar tries to calm him down, telling him they can't exile Sol from ThunderClan without proof of his wrongdoings or he will only cause trouble in other Clans.
Hollyleaf returns, and Firestar welcomes her back into the Clan. Dovewing urgently informs him of their escape from the tunnels after hearing WindClan and Sol plotting an attack on ThunderClan.
Later, when Hollyleaf admits to killing Ashfur, Firestar refuses to punish her, even when the Clan disagrees. He says that although she should have spoken up sooner, living outside ThunderClan and her guilt of keeping the secret is enough punishment. When he finds out Cinderheart is Cinderpelt he is, like most of the Clan, shocked. Also, Cinderheart decides to be a medicine cat, and he accepts it but is shown to be disappointed, as Firestar likely wanted his former apprentice Cinderpelt to finally follow the path as a warrior.
Firestar calls Dovewing in for a meeting. He asks her to cast her senses toward WindClan and figure out what is going on. When the reply is vague, Firestar seems somewhat puzzled. He tells Dovewing that Sol still has a score to settle with the Clans.

The Last Hope

After Dawnpelt's outburst at a previous Gathering, Firestar temporarily bans Jayfeather from future Gatherings- just as the other Clans asked of him. He and the other leaders discuss the strange scents that have appeared inside each Clan's territory. The scents were mentioned to be 'not from the Clans'.
Firestar follows Jayfeather out of ThunderClan camp, noticing that the medicine cat seems troubled. When Jayfeather scornfully makes a point that Leafpool broke both the warrior code and the medicine cat code, he is puzzled at Firestar's obvious surprise. Firestar honestly admits that he doesn't think about it, then tries to convince Jayfeather that it was meant to happen.
Firestar appears briefly several times, such as when he is confronted by Blackstar after several cats supposedly crossed their border, and when he argues with Lionblaze about his destiny.
As a continuation of the Fire will save the Clan prophecy, Firestar discovers that he is the fourth cat from the Tribe of Endless Hunting's prophecy in a dream when Jayfeather appears. He vows to StarClan and Jayfeather that he will unite the four Clans.
Firestar meets with the other Clan leaders and their medicine cats to discuss the prophecy, informing them about Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Dovewing's powers and about the Dark Forest cats' plan to overtake and destroy the Clans and warrior code. Once the leaders have heard everything he has to say, they agree to join the alliance to fight for the warrior code and their Clans.
Despite Sandstorm's protests, Firestar insists on fighting in the final battle. He lines up with several other ThunderClan warriors, then scares away a couple of Dark Forest cats, and later guards the nursery. He then appears again at the end of the battle, fighting Tigerstar and successfully winning the fight. Although Firestar kills him, lightning strikes a tree and it catches fire, and smoke billows over him and he dies from all of the wounds he received during the battle. His spirit then leaves with Bluestar when she introduces the Three to the cats that gave Firestar his nine lives, sweeping his gaze over the Clan for the last time.

In the Stand-Alone Manga

The Rise of Scourge

Although not mentioned by name, he is seen on a tree stump announcing Tigerstar's treachery.

In the Ravenpaw's Path Arc

Shattered Peace

Firestar is seen once and briefly in the beginning of the book as Firepaw. He is seen with Ravenpaw and Graypaw while they are taking him to Barley's farm. He is not seen after that. It is also mentioned by Spottedleaf that Firestar would be able to help Ravenpaw and Barley in getting their farm back.

A Clan in Need

Firestar is first seen when Ravenpaw and Barley come to ThunderClan, asking for a battle patrol to come back with them and help get their barn back. When Ravenpaw asks, Firestar dodges the question, instead making an attempt to make Ravenpaw and Barley more comfortable staying in ThunderClan. When a patrol is attacked, Firestar is forced to admit the trouble that they are having from the BloodClan rogues' living in theTwolegplace and is also forced to admit that ThunderClan couldn't spare a battle patrol at the time, but that after the problem is solved, he'll send a patrol to help Ravenpaw and Barley.
When Ravenpaw and Barley return with Barley's sister, Violet, Firestar prepares to lead ThunderClan to attack BloodClan, he also tells his warriors to show no mercy, which is something he rarely would say. Once BloodClan is defeated and disbanded, Firestar informs Barley and Ravenpaw that ThunderClan will send a battle patrol and he would lead it himself.

The Heart of a Warrior

In this book, Firestar leads a patrol of ThunderClan cats to defeat the rogues who have taken over Barley and Ravenpaw's barn. At the barn, he gives out orders to set up a camp and hunt. After exploring the barn, Firestar tells the cats his plan to attack them. Later, at night, he leads the cats to the barn. When Snapper finds them, Firestar orders the patrol to attack. After the farmer yells at them to go, Firestar tells the ThunderClan patrol to meet up at the cowshed- their camp. Once they come up with another plan, Firestar and the patrol go to attack the rogues again. But when more rogues come, Firestar tells the cats to retreat and regroup. Firestar loses a life during the battle. After winning the fight, Firestar says goodbye and leaves.

In the The Lost Warrior Arc

The Lost Warrior

Graystripe thinks about his first encounter with Firestar, and comments that he knew that Firestar was a real warrior at heart. He also has a vision of Firestar and other ThunderClan cats calling to him while he travels to search for his Clan.

Warrior's Refuge

Although he is not seen, when Millie scares off the dogs, Graystripe says, "I wouldn't be more surprised if Firestar floated out of the sky and licked me on the nose."

Warrior's Return

Firestar is the first cat to recognize Graystripe and Millie at the Gathering. He and Graystripe are extremely happy to see each other. The book ends just as Graystripe is going to introduce Millie to Firestar.

In the SkyClan and the Stranger Arc

The Rescue

He does not appear, but Leafstar wonders why he didn't tell her about parenting kits and Echosong says it's probably because he's a tom and he didn't have that kind of problem. Leafstar names one of her kits Firekit in honor of him.

In the Field Guide Arc

Secrets of the Clans

Firestar introduces the reader to ThunderClan and describes how he became a leader. He said that he would lay down all of his nine lives for his Clan, just like his Clanmates would give their lives up for him. Firestar says that there is no Clan in the forest truer or braver than ThunderClan. He describes his Clan as the Clan of heroes, compassion, and destiny.
When Sandstorm shows the reader around the old ThunderClan camp, she tells the reader that Firestar asked her to show them around. She shows the reader Firestar's den and peeks around in it. Sandstorm thinks he must've left to go on a patrol, and she tells the reader that he sleeps beyond the lichen in his den. She says Firestar was a pudgy kittypet when she first met him, and that no one thought he would ever become leader. When Sandstorm talks to Leafpaw about Squirrelpaw, she tells her that she'll have a word with Firestar about letting her come to the Gathering.
When Squirrelflight shows the readers around ThunderClan's new camp, she jumps onto the Highledge and tells the readers that Firestar makes his announcements from there. When she accidentally calls a meeting, Squirrelflight brings the reader to hide in Firestar's den. She tells the reader that Firestar sleeps in a bed of ferns and moss, and accidentally messes it up, and asks the reader if they think he'll notice.
Firepaw is listed as one of Bluestar's apprentices.
Firestar is listed as one of ThunderClan's significant leaders. He is described as brave, intelligent, loyal - a natural leader. It is said that he has an unusually strong connection with StarClan. It also says he broughtWindClan back after being exiled by ShadowClan, and uncovered Tigerstar's treachery. It states that he saved the clan from a terrible fire in the camp, and discovered Tigerstar's plan with the dog pack. Finally, it says that Firestar led the clans in battle against BloodClan, and kept the clans together as they found their new home.
Firestar is mentioned to have prophetic dreams, even when he was a kittypet.

Cats of the Clans

Firestar is said to have given his Clan little chance to forget Firestar's kittypet origins, by bringing Cloudtail to the clan and Daisy to the nursery. Rock explains to the kits how Firestar's kittypet origins do not make him less of a warrior, and he wonders what Bluestar was thinking when she brought him into the forest.
Rock shows sympathy for Firestar, saying that he is hardly able to close his eyes without "some farsighted dream filling his mind," though admits that Firestar has handled this well. He wonders whether it took more than a Clanborn cat to discover Tigerstar's treachery, or bring WindClan back home when they were chased away by ShadowClan. He also says Sandstorm has forgiven Firestar for his kittypet roots. Rock wishes him nothing but peace, and a long life. Rock says, "Who knows how every one of Firestar's nine lives will end."
When Rock talks about Bluestar, Firestar is mentioned, if Bluestar took him over as her own kit, since she lost hers. He also said that Bluestar saw Firestar as a savior the moment the sun hit his flame-colored pelt. He says that Spottedleaf had said to Bluestar that Fire would save the Clan, so Firestar must have seemed like a gift from StarClan.
When talking about Graystripe, Rock says Graystripe was the first cat to befriend Firestar, when he came into the forest. He also says that they both share the same foolish generosity. Rock says that Sandstorm won Firestar's heart after Spottedleaf died, and if it wasn't for her, Firestar might not have fought BloodClan at all. On Sandstorm's page, Rock says that Firestar had determination to save the forest from Scourge. Sandstorm made Firestar believe he was doing the right thing to fight the cats from Twolegplace. He says Firestar trusted her because she loved him above all, and would never sacrifice his life for the Clan. Rock says Sandstorm knows Firestar better than he realizes, better even than Spottedleaf and that Sandstorm isn't just his shadow either. Her courage had matched his on the journey to rebuild SkyClan, and matched Firestar blow for blow in the battle against the rats. He says he hopes Firestar appreciates her journey as much as she deserves.
On Squirrelflight's page, Rock says that The Great Journey proved that she had the courage of her father, Firestar. When Rock talks about Cloudtail, he says that Cloudtail went back to his kittypet life, until StarClan and Firestar gave him a second chance by rescuing him.
Rock tells the reader that Firestar has waited a long time for Jaypaw, Hollypaw, and Lionpaw, but in dread, not hope, because he wondered how any cat could posess more power than StarClan. When talking about Tallstar, Rock mentions that Tallstar had no choice to do anything when Firestar and Graystripe risked their lives to bring his Clan home. Also Tallstar trusted Firestar when he said that Bluestar was mistaken, and refused to fight ThunderClan.
It was said on Onestar's page, that Onestar was good friends with Firestar the moment they met on the journey back from the Thunderpath. Firestar believed that they could depend on their friendship forever, and was only too pleased when Tallstar switched his deputy at the last minute. Rock says Onestar knew that the clans would call him Firestar's kittypet, and would roll over and let him tickle his belly whenever it suited the ThunderClan leader. It was a hard lesson for Firestar to not have his old friend, but it was even harder for Onestar because he missed Firestar.
Firestar is mentioned twice on Leopardstar's page. Rock says that since Leopardstar saw Crookedstar'sattitude towards half-Clan cats, she turned her back on Firestar and his Clan of kittypet warriors. He says that thanks to Firestar, she ended up on the winning Clan (LionClan) against the BloodClan cats. On Feathertail'spage, Rock tells the reader that Firestar, Graystripe and Ravenpaw saved Feathertail, Mistyfoot, and Stormfur when TigerClan held them prisoner.
Firestar is mentioned once when Rock talks about Hawkfrost. He says that it was Tigerstar's idea for Hawkfrost to plot with a ThunderClan enemy of Brambleclaw's to lure Firestar into a fox trap. Tigerstar underestimated Brambleclaw's loyalty to the Clan leader, so Brambleclaw killed Hawkfrost and saved Firestar instead. On Barley and Ravenpaw's page, Rock says that Firestar persuaded Ravenpaw to leave the forest and go live with Barley, or else Tigerstar would have killed him.
On Smudge and Princess' page, Rock says that Smudge was Firestar's neighbor when he was a kittypet, and Smudge wondered why Firestar (then Rusty) would've wanted to live with the Clans, but still stayed friends with him. He never forgot his friendship with Firestar, and allowed him to stay outside his Twoleg nest to dream of the SkyClan cats. Princess was Firestar's littermate who lived with different house folk. When she found out Firestar was the leader of a Clan of forest cats, she gave her first born kit, Cloudtail, to Firestar to bring to the Clan. Rock says Princess was a good friend of Firestar's and he says she still sits on her fence and looks out into the woods, wondering where he is and if he's safe.
When Rock talked about Cloudstar and Skywatcher, Firestar is mentioned a few times. Rock says that if kittypets like Firestar can catch mice and thrushes, surely forest-born cats can pick up those skills? Cloudstar said to Birdflight that he would wait for her forever, but they didn't meet again until Firestar and Sandstorm rebuilt their Clan. Also, Rock said that when Firestar and Sandstorm arrived at the gorge, Skywatcher was the last descendant of SkyClan.
On LeafdappleEchosong and Sharpclaw's page, Rock says that Firestar invited Leafdapple (when she was a rogue) into the new SkyClan because she could leap high into trees, showing her SkyClan ancestry. Rock told the reader that Echosong had a dream of Firestar and Sandstorm before they found the gorge, and knew that these cats needed her help.
On Scourge and Bone's page, Rock says that Scourge killed Tigerstar and Firestar had to watch helplessly as Tigerstar lost all nine of his lives. In revenge, Firestar killed Scourge, losing one of his lives in the process.
He also hints that he knows how Firestar will lose each of his nine lives, but refuses to tell the kits.

Code of the Clans

Firestar is mentioned in "Welcome to the Warrior Code" when Leafpool tells the reader that Firestar told her that they would be visiting that day.
Firestar is featured as a young apprentice in Who Goes There? Whitestorm Teaches Border Tactics. He is still tormented by Sandpaw and Dustpaw, by Dustpaw trying to push him into brambles and Sandpaw preparing to put a fire ant in his pelt, but Whitestorm caught them every time. Whitestorm makes Firepaw go to the end of the line at first, and Sandpaw thinks he has fleas, to which her mentor denies.
When Whitestorm asks what a patrol might smell besides their own Clan's borders on a border patrol, Firepaw answers, saying the other Clans' scent. Firepaw indicates the rest of his "patrol" when Whitestorm demonstrates to them what happens when other cats cross their border.
In another part of the book, Sandstorm talks about her love for Firestar. She asks if Fireheart was just a kittypet, would he stop Bluestar from fighting with WindClan, would he had risked Bluestar's trust, or would so many of his Clanmates had supported him, even Whitestorm or Goldenflower. Sandstorm says that Dustpelt always told her that Fireheart can never be a true warrior because he wasn't born in ThunderClan. She states that he was a show-off when he first came to the Clan, always catching more prey, being the best in battle-training, or being the most solemn at Gatherings. She and Dustpelt could never figure out why Graystripe was friends with him because he didn't even seem to know what fun was. He always got into trouble, as Sandstorm said, like sneaking Ravenpaw out of camp, she saw him and Graystripe sneaking out of camp with Ravenpaw, then Fireheart came up with the excuse that Ravenpaw was killed. He always had annoyed Tigerclaw, she said, but now it looks like he was right, as Tigerclaw was the biggest enemy of ThunderClan.
She says Fireheart didn't just accept the warrior code; he thinks about it and figures out how it's supposed to work. Dustpelt told her that Fireheart doesn't belong in ThunderClan because the warrior code says to reject kittypets, but she said that they have to reject that life, not the cats. Sandstorm says Fireheart would argue with any cat, in or out of ThunderClan, if he thought they were doing the wrong thing, and she said she doesn't want to live in a clan that's always in war. She says Fireheart would stop a battle if it was unnecessary, and that's why Tallstar trusted him to make sure that ThunderClan and WindClan didn't fight. She told the reader that maybe a kittypet can know us better than we know ourselves, and maybe it takes an outsider to look into the truth, like Fireheart did with Tigerclaw. She wonders if he'll ever see the truth in her heart, however much Fireheart breaks the warrior code, she'll always love him more than any other cat. Finally, she asks that if he knew, would he love her back?

Battles of the Clans

Brambleclaw mentions to the reader that Firestar has started holding training sessions in the trees, so ThunderClan cats can learn to move among the trees and come down on the enemy from above. Buzzardstaralso mentions how his former leader, Cloudstar, summoned Firestar to rebuild the old SkyClan, and Sparrowpaw excitedly tells Clovertail how Firestar related the famous sky-drop move to his sister's mentor, Sharpclaw.
He is also fleetingly mentioned in Tigerstar's tales of battles in the old forest; when he fetched back WindClan with Graystripe, when he arranged a chain of cats to keep the dog pack away from the camp, and when Tigerstar admits that Firestar showed great courage with BloodClan, and states that he'll need every whisker of it when they meet again.
The rogue, Nightwhisper, attempts to kill Firestar, who was then Fireheart, when Tigerclaw led his rogues on the ThunderClan camp. Fireheart fights back and gets away with Brackenfur's help.
Later, Graystripe relates a battle with the foxes, and mentions how Firestar and Sandstorm were away somewhere on a special mission.

In the Short Stories and Plays

After Sunset: The Right Choice?

Brightheart watches Firestar while he sleeps after being caught in a fox trap. His neck is bruised, and he is not able to eat or speak.

Beyond the Code: Brightspirit's Mercy

Firestar appears at the first Gathering. He is reluctant to reveal that ThunderClan has plenty of prey during leaf-bare whilst the rest of the Clans are starving, in case they try to steal prey from ThunderClan's territory. When he doesn't talk much, Blackstar asks if he is too scared to admit that his Clan is going hungry, when it is really the opposite.

The Elders' Concern

When the elders - Halftail, Patchpelt, Dappletail, and Smallear - talk about the late appointment of Firestar (then Fireheart) as the new deputy. Patchpelt, Dappletail, and Smallear believe it is a sign that ThunderClan is breaking up, since the naming ceremony is late and Fireheart is a former kittypet. Patchpelt assures the elders that Fireheart isn't the rightful deputy, and Dappletail and Smallear agree. Halftail watches in dismay as they give up faith in Bluestar and Fireheart.

Ultimate Leader Election: Firestar

Firestar first finds two injured RiverClan warriors, Pouncetail and Otterheart, on his territory, coming from the ShadowClan border. He takes them back to his camp to be nursed by Leafpool.
Later, he calls a special Gathering before the full moon to discuss the troubles among the Clans: scarce prey, fighting along the borders, and the like. When the Clans decide they need to unite for a short time to survive, after the casting of stones as suggested by Jayfeather, he is elected as the leader for the united Clans for that time.

In the Novellas

Hollyleaf's Story

Firestar does not formally appear in Hollyleaf's Story, but is listed in the allegiances.
He is mentioned by Hollyleaf, when Fallen Leaves asks if she remembers what happens when her and her siblings, Lionblaze and Jayfeather, went to rescue the missing WindClan kits. Hollyleaf remembers while her, her littermates and two other WindClan cats, Heathertail and Breezepelt, were looking for the WindClan kits, he and Onestar, WindClan's leader, were about to wage war on one another.
Firestar is also mentioned very briefly multiple other times throughout the book, when Hollyleaf is recalling her time in ThunderClan.

Trivia

  • He may be based on a cat Kate knew.[35]
  • The Erins believed that after the first arc, Firestar's story was pretty much over, so they started the next arc from a fresh viewpoint.[35]
  • Firestar's love relationship with Spottedleaf was never shown that often when she was alive because he was only a new apprentice at the time. There probably wouldn't have been more relationship if she lived because medicine cats can't have mates.[35]
  • Firestar's mother, Nutmeg, probably does not know about him becoming a wild cat.[36]
  • He has never had feelings for Cinderpelt.[37]
  • It was confirmed he's not related to the ThunderClan founder, Thunder.[38]
  • In an Erin Hunter Chat, it is revealed that Scourge and Firestar share the same father, Jake.[39]
  • In the same chat, it is also revealed that he loses a life helping Ravenpaw and Barley.[39]
  • He was mistakenly called Firepaw despite already having received his warrior name.[27]
  • In the beginning of "The Darkest Hour", he is mistakenly called Firestar before receiving his leader name.[40]
  • He is mistakenly called Fireheart after receiving his leader name.[41]
  • He has been mistakenly depicted with amber eyes on several occasions.[42][43]
  • He has been mistakenly described as golden.[44]
  • He has been mistakenly called Firestorm.[45]
  • Tigerstar was mistakenly called Firestar once.[46]
  • He is mentioned to have seven lives, however at the time he only had five.[47]
  • Leafstar's kit, Firekit, is named after him.[48]
  • Fireheart was said to be the deputy after Lionheart died in The Elders' Concerneven though Tigerclaw became deputy after Lionheart.[49]
  • Kate stated that Firestar was not killed by the burning tree, but instead died of his wounds from the battle. Dovewing only imagined she saw him get up and walk away, and the lightning striking the tree snapped her back into reality.[50]

Sorreltail gives birth to her, although unnamed, along with three other kits, during the badger attack. Cinderpelt, theThunderClan medicine cat, sacrifices herself to keep the badger from killing Sorreltail and the kits.

Sunset Edit

Cinderkit is named in honor of Cinderpelt. Leafpool, who had been Cinderpelt's apprentice, says she thought it was a wonderful name. Cinderkit is said to look exactly like Cinderpelt, with the same gray coat and blue eyes. WhenSquirrelflight sees Cinderkit for the first time, she lets out a squeak of alarm because of the resemblance. Cinderkit's two sisters are named Honeykit and Poppykit, and her brother is named Molekit.
Cinderkit does not appear very often, except when she is seen padding out of the nursery followed by Brightheart, who carries her back inside.
It was revealed to Leafpool by Spottedleaf that Cinderkit is a reincarnation of Cinderpelt. As Spottedleaf shows Cinderkit to Leafpool, Leafpool looks into Cinderkit's blue eyes and watches her yawn and then go to sleep.

In the Power of Three Arc Edit

The Sight Edit

She has been made an apprentice, Cinderpaw, and her mentor is Cloudtail. She is one of Hollypaw's closest friends.
When Hollypaw has her first battle training session in the mossy hollow, Cinderpaw has already started her training session. Cloudtail sees how well Hollypaw is performing, he suggests that she should try training with Cinderpaw.
When she and Hollypaw are training together, Cinderpaw gets some moss stuck behind her ear, and she flicks her paw while grooming. Leafpool seems shocked after seeing this, and tells Hollypaw that Cinderpelt used to flick her paw exactly like that. Hollypaw senses a strange feeling coming from Leafpool and wonders why she feels strange about the paw flick.
When the Gathering patrol returns to camp with Graystripe and MillieFirestar asks Cinderpaw why she isn't asleep and she tells him that she doesn't want to sleep until she hears about the Gathering. Cinderpaw wants to help get Graystripe and Millie settle and runs off, crashing into Brackenfur. Brackenfur tells Cinderpaw how much she seems like his sister, Cinderpelt who was killed by a badger in two earlier books.
Longtail is seen complaining about Mousefur's wheezing. Jaypaw discovers that Mousefur has the disease greencough and reports it to Leafpool. Leafpool sends Cloudtail, Jaypaw, and Cinderpaw to go to theAbandoned Twoleg Nest to gather some catmint. It turns out that all the catmint is killed by the leaf-bare frost, and they only find a couple of short stocks. They head back to camp and give Mousefur the catmint that they had found.

Dark River Edit

Cinderpaw follows Hollypaw out of camp one night to look for Lionpaw. She tells Hollypaw that Lionpaw may be doing something he will live to regret, and would only cause pain. It is possible this was specifically referring to Leafpool's forbidden affair with a WindClan warrior, which Cinderpelt would have remembered. They find Lionpaw by the lake, playing with a WindClan apprentice named Heatherpaw. When Lionpaw sees Cinderpaw, he asks Hollypaw if she had brought all of ThunderClan with her. After quarreling with his sister, Lionpaw storms back to camp.
During an assessment with Mousepaw and Hollypaw, He was about to fall when Cinderpaw saves him. However, she fell instead and broke her hind leg. Furthermore, Cinderpaw tells Hollypaw she is afraid of badgers and hopes she will never have to meet one again, despite never seeing one before this point.
While she is recovering in Leafpool's den, Jaypaw enters her dreams. Cinderpaw is walking around the oldThunderClan camp from the forest and is telling Jaypaw about it. She explains to him that she used to sleep in the apprentice den, and then moved to Yellowfang's den. Her voice then suddenly ages and appears much older and wiser. She tells Jaypaw to tell Leafpool not to worry, that she will recover this time, and that she is proud of her and has learned more than she could ever have taught her. Jaypaw goes through series of Cinderpelt's memories, such as getting hit on the Thunderpath, The Great Journey, and getting killed by badgers. Jaypaw then realizes that Cinderpaw is actually Cinderpelt.
When Cinderpaw wakes up, she vaguely recalls Jaypaw being in a dream with her in a forest (the old ThunderClan camp), but Jaypaw reassures her that it was just a dream. Jaypaw tells Leafpool that Cinderpaw is actually Cinderpelt and Leafpool tells him that Cinderpaw cannot know this. Cinderpaw, despite being confined to the medicine cat den, is constantly asking Hollypaw and Jaypaw to play catch with her, much to Leafpool's despair. She knows that Cinderpelt can't recover and wants to make sure Cinderpaw does. Later, Jaypaw intentionally gives Cinderpaw the wrong herbs to see if she will know the difference. This angers Leafpool, and she scolds Jaypaw for it, making him defend himself.

Outcast Edit

Cinderpaw continues to train with Cloudtail, who shows concern about her injured leg, fearing that it is not completely healed. She does not like this concern, because she feels that it's healed, though pain can strike at it sometimes. Hollypaw tells Cinderpaw her plan about concentrating on one part of training at a time so she can be a better warrior. Cinderpaw says that it is mouse-brained, but then apologizes, yet advising her friend not to do it.
Lionpaw is seen training with Poppypaw, Honeypaw, and Cinderpaw, while Berrynose looks on.
Hollypaw and Lionpaw go with their mentors to watch Cloudtail and Thornclaw train their apprentices, Cinderpaw and Poppypaw. As Cinderpaw and Poppypaw demonstrate an advanced battle move, Lionpaw asks Ashfur if he can try it, too.

EclipseEdit

Cinderpaw has her assessment to finally become a warrior. While leaping for a squirrel, her injured leg buckles and starts hurting again. This time, Cinderpaw is very discouraged because her sisters, Honeypaw and Poppypaw, get to become warriors before her, becoming Honeyfern and Poppyfrost. Cinderpaw is angry, due to the fact that she wants to sit vigil with her sisters, not on her own. She stays in Leafpool's den for a while, not wanting to move her leg. When Jaypaw comes up with the idea of swimming, she says it might help, so she tries it. The swimming helps with her pain, enough for her to walk easier, because she could move the muscle in her leg without having to put weight on it. Before Millie gives birth, Cinderpaw and Hollypaw talk about her and the future kits. Hollypaw asks Cinderpaw if she knows if Millie had names in mind for them. Cinderpaw said that she hadn't because Leafpool didn't want her to, because sometimes it was best to see a kit first before naming them. Hollypaw jokes that she must have been a prickly kit.
She gossips with Hollypaw that she has been seeing Whitewing and Birchfall starting to share tongues together.
When WindClan attacks, she stays back in the medicine cat den, but says she will attack if needed. At the end of the battle, Cinderpaw gains her warrior name, Cinderheart, in honor of those who have been lost, along with Hollypaw and Lionpaw, who become Hollyleaf and Lionblaze. Firestar said 'In honor of those who have been lost,' because Cinderheart was named after Cinderpelt. He does not know that she is Cinderpelt though. It appears that when Cinderheart is getting her warrior name, Cinderpelt's spirit is watching her, glad she was finally getting to become a warrior. Cinderheart is happy that she's finally getting her warrior name after her long wait.

Long ShadowsEdit

Cinderheart is mentioned only briefly throughout this book. Near the beginning, Hollyleaf joins her on a border patrol led by a ThunderClan warrior, Ashfur. While they are on it, Cinderheart confesses to Hollyleaf that she does not like going this way because of the recent battle in the previous book. When the patrol findsTawnypelt and her three kits, TigerpawFlamepaw, and Dawnpaw, Cinderheart is amused when the three apprentices chant Hollyleaf’s name, and jokes with her friend that she has three new apprentices.
Much later in the book, Cinderheart is seen coming into camp with a hunting patrol, and her weariness, caused by the growing number of sick cats, is sensed by Jaypaw.
Later, when Firestar suggests that all the sick cats shelter in the abandoned Twoleg nest, Cinderheart is one of the cats to agree with him, willing to try it. The last time she is mentioned in the book is when she is seen working on the Twoleg nest, stuffing gaps with twigs to keep out the cold, along with Brackenfur.

SunriseEdit

Cinderheart expresses disbelief when Purdy sticks up for Sol, saying that he was seen near the WindClan border. Later, when her sister Honeyfern is bitten by a snake saving Briarkit, she runs to her sister. She is horrified and grief-stricken when she dies. Leafpool stares at her desperately, as if expecting help from Cinderpelt in her, while Honeyfern is dying.
After the Gathering in which Hollyleaf announces her real parents, Cinderheart pads up to Hollyleaf and questions Hollyleaf about what she had just done. Hollyleaf claims that what she had done was the right thing, but Cinderheart disagrees, saying that she had only caused more pain. She is shown to be more like Cinderpelt during this moment.

In the Omen of the Stars ArcEdit

The Fourth ApprenticeEdit

Cinderheart receives her first apprentice, Ivypaw. Dovepaw and her mentor, Lionblaze, go with Cinderheart and Ivypaw to fetch water from the lake. While she, Ivypaw, Lionblaze, and Dovepaw retrieve the water, Ivypaw starts sniffing at a dead fish, making Rainstorm, a RiverClan warrior, think that she was stealing prey. He almost attacks her, but he gets stuck in the mud. Cinderheart scolds him for scaring such a young apprentice.
Cinderheart stays with Ivypaw and Dovepaw while Lionblaze and the others take Rainstorm back to the ThunderClan camp for him to get looked after. When Ivypaw is upset that they aren't going on the patrol to take Rainstorm home, Cinderheart tells her that they will go to the training clearing to practice battle moves.
Cinderheart is later seen expressing concern for Poppyfrost, who is pregnant with Berrynose's kits.
At a Gathering, Cinderheart sympathizes with Lionblaze after she catches him trying to ignore Tigerheart. She tells him there was nothing wrong with having friends in other Clans, even if they weren't kin. Later on during the Gathering, she comments about how Mistyfoot was trying to change Leopardstar's mind.
Cinderheart later goes to Jayfeather because she's concerned about Poppyfrost. She tells him that she was still upset about Honeyfern's death. Jayfeather sighs, and tells her that there is no cure for a cat that was just sad. Soon afterward, Cinderheart bursts out how much she misses Hollyleaf, and Jayfeather unhappily agrees with her.
Cinderheart helps Jayfeather tend to the scratches on his flank when he returns home with Poppyfrost.

Fading EchoesEdit

Brambleclaw assigns Cinderheart to patrol with him, Dovepaw, Ivypaw, and Lionblaze.
Cinderheart and Lionblaze are seen teaching Dovepaw and Ivypaw how to hop from tree to tree as a battle strategy. Cinderheart tells the two apprentices that Longtail swore that in the old territory, he made it from the Great Sycamore to the camp without touching the forest floor. Dovepaw asks how far it was. Cinderheart tells her that it was about as far from where they were to the hollow, annoying Lionblaze, because she knew this even though she had never seen the old territory.
In the middle of the night, she and Lionblaze go for a walk due to Lionblaze having trouble sleeping, and she expresses her concern for Dovepaw and Ivypaw's worsening relationship. Lionblaze, who doesn't seem to care, appears to annoy her, but it wears off.
Cinderheart teases Lionblaze by asking him to climb trees with her, but then she tells him she remembered he didn't like to climb trees. The two race each other to the lake and Cinderheart dares the golden-furred warrior to get his paws wet. Lionblaze replies that he wouldn't.
Cinderheart goes into the water and starts to swim, apparently still remembering the moves Jayfeather had taught her. Lionblaze teases her about being a RiverClan cat, when Cinderheart jumps up to her defense, saying that she is a ThunderClan cat, through and through. Lionblaze then says that he is glad that she is, showing some affection for her. Misunderstanding him, Cinderheart says that ThunderClan was the best Clan to be in.
The two go back to camp. In the morning, Lionblaze expects Cinderheart to be friendly because of their walk the night before, but she only acknowledges him hurriedly before she leaves, possibly because she was angry with Lionblaze for being indifferent about Dovepaw and Ivypaw's tense relationship.

Night WhispersEdit

Cinderheart follows Lionblaze out of camp and goes for a walk with him when he can't sleep. When an owl startles them, and they race to the abandoned Twoleg nest, she shows concern for Lionblaze, asking him if he was alright. She joins him on an early patrol.
Cinderheart then takes Ivypaw and Dovepaw out for training with Berrynose, in which Dovepaw doesn't pay attention, then goes hunting alone with Ivypaw.
Later, Lionblaze is daydreaming about the night before where the two took another moonlight walk to discuss Ivypaw's and Dovepaw's training. Lionblaze asks Cinderheart if they are more than friends, and Cinderheart teasingly asks him if he hadn't already guessed yet. When they take out their apprentices, Lionblaze looks at Sorreltail and Brackenfur together, moving as one, and pictures him and Cinderheart like that one day and their kits running around at his feet, and, guessing his thoughts, Cinderheart brushes his cheek and states that she would like that too.
Later, when Lionblaze goes off to drive a fox off the territory, Cinderheart sees him covered in blood. She frantically runs back to camp, thinking that the blood was his own. She is frightened by the amount of blood, and panics, causing other cats to think that Lionblaze is near death. She waits for him until he is done getting treated.
Lionblaze then leads her to a spot behind a bush near the medicine den and tells her that she doesn't need to worry about him ever getting hurt because he is part of a prophecy. Cinderheart is at first calm about this, and looks like she understands, but later loses control. She claims that she couldn't be Lionblaze's mate if he was part of this prophecy. She runs back to the warriors den with a wail.
She is then seen talking to Leafpool and whispering something in her ear, and Lionblaze senses with dread that she might be telling her about the prophecy, but rethinks it and says he still trusts her.
She then goes on a hunting patrol with Lionblaze, Dovepaw, and Leafpool near the WindClan border, and observes Lionblaze and Breezepelt fighting over a thrush. When Leafpool breaks it up and tells them to head back home, she whispers, "You could have killed him" to Lionblaze and he asks why she was so concerned over a WindClan warrior. He gets frustrated over this and asks Cinderheart to stop treating him like a two-headed fox. Cinderheart retorts and says that she doesn't know how to handle him having his power.

Sign of the MoonEdit

Cinderheart gives Ivypaw her warrior assessment. Firestar is experimenting with new strategies, one of them being assessing an apprentice with two warriors instead of just their mentor. Cinderheart receives Millie to help her.
During the warriors' ceremony, when Firestar calls on Cinderheart to tell him how her apprentice did, Cinderheart replies that she is excellent at battling, but her hunting could use a bit more work, as a vole was right in her presence but it took her longer to catch it. Cinderheart says it was a messy catch. Then, she calls on Millie to give her report. Millie also gives a good report of Ivypaw. Ivypaw then becomes Ivypool, and Lionblaze's apprentice, Dovepaw, becomes Dovewing.
While hunting with Lionblaze, she talks about the prophecy and appears thrilled and in awe that he's part of it. This annoys Lionblaze, thinking that she feels no loss of not being mates anymore, but he later realizes that her mew is tinged with sadness. When she killed a bird, she was acting strange, sadly saying that she never had a mate or kits. Lionblaze tries to comfort her, but Cinderheart turns on him claiming that he does not understand and flees in the trees, leaving Lionblaze stunned. It is more likely that it had been Cinderpelt speaking instead of her. Leafpool mentions her while talking to Lionblaze, saying that Cinderheart loved him, and that she thinks she still does.
When out in the forest with Lionblaze, RosepetalToadstep and Briarlight are attacked by a dog, and Lionblaze saves her with some help from Toadstep. Toadstep is so busy showing off in admiration of Lionblaze that he is nearly killed by the dog. Cinderheart comments warmly to Lionblaze that he was a hero.

The Forgotten WarriorEdit

Cinderheart is excited to see her friend Hollyleaf again, and is the first one to see her when she enters camp after being away for so long.
Cinderheart learns of her past life as Cinderpelt when Jayfeather visits her in a dream after being told to do so by Yellowfang. She feels all the memories, feelings, pains coming back to her, and even knowledge. She is confused, and wonders who she is. Jayfeather reassures her that she is Cinderheart, and tells her that she should honor StarClan for letting her live the life she was destined for.
She is on a patrol with Lionblaze, Hazeltail, and Foxleap. Lionblaze notices she is distracted, and sneaks up behind her, and tells her there is a WindClan patrol ahead to see if she's alert. She then becomes angry with him, and the patrol gets back at camp they see Mousewhisker and Cherrypaw curled on the ground in pain. It becomes clear to the Clan that poison themselves with water hemlock. She manages to save their lives while Jayfeather is checking on his marigold plants outside of camp. She is instructing Leafpool how to do things while Lionblaze wonders how she know so much about herbs. Once the two are safe, Cinderheart's past identity becomes known to the rest of ThunderClan, and she can't decide whether to be a medicine cat or warrior. She snaps at Leafpool for keeping her past life a secret from her, and runs out of camp. Lionblaze follows her, and encourages her that she is Cinderheart, and she always has been. She replies that she wasn't always Cinderheart, and that she walked this path before: loving some cat she cannot have.
Eventually, Cinderheart decides moves into the medicine cat's den and acts as ThunderClan's second medicine cat, although she is unhappy in this position. She spends lots of time with Hollyleaf and cats whisper about the both of them having secrets to hide. Often, Cinderheart feels unhappy and confused about who she is and who she believes she is.
Later, Cinderheart asks Jayfeather where her destiny lies. Jayfeather replies that StarClan gave her a second chance so she could have a mate, kits, and live the life of a warrior that Cinderpelt was denied because of her injury. Jayfeather then says that Lionblaze would make her happy and she responds by thanking him. She later joins the warriors in the battle with WindClan, abandoning her post as medicine cat.

The Last HopeEdit

Lionblaze is still upset about not being able to be with Cinderheart, and he fights with a ShadowClan patrol, and forces himself to be defeated by Ratscar, so that he could show Cinderheart that he can choose his own destiny by getting hurt, regardless of his power.
Later, Lionblaze speaks to Cinderheart about being able to choose your own destiny. Cinderheart tries to argue, but he states that she could be whoever she wants to be, and that she has her own life too. Cinderheart says that she chooses the life of a warrior, to be with Lionblaze. When she says that, Cinderpelt's spirit seperates from Cinderheart, leaving her with her own spirit. Cinderpelt whispers thank you to Cinderheart, and she tells Lionblaze that Cinderpelt is set free. He asks her if she will fight with him in the final battle, and she replies by saying always, and the two get back together.
She participates in the battle against The Dark Forest, and her best friend Hollyleaf is killed by losing too much blood, after saving Ivypool from Hawkfrost and having a brutal fight with him, managing to have Hawkfrost run away in the end. Cinderheart is angered at this, and fights with all of her strength, stating that the Dark Forest cats are fox-hearts.

In the NovellasEdit

Hollyleaf's StoryEdit

When Hollyleaf is given poppy seeds, she feels just like she did when she was back in ThunderClan, sharing a nest with Cinderheart.
Cinderheart is seen when Brambleclaw sends Lionblaze and her, with their apprentices to find what caused the noise at the top of the hollow.

TriviaEdit

  • Cinderheart has WindClan blood because her great-great-grandfather, Windflight, was half WindClan.[15]
  • She has SkyClan blood, because her grandmother, Willowpelt, is Spottedleaf's sister, and Spottedleaf is a descendant of Spottedpelt and Gorseclaw.[16]
  • She has been described as a dark gray she-cat, identical to Cinderpelt, but this was later changed to her current description.[2]
  • Cinderheart might have a crush on Firestar.[17]
  • When Cinderheart goes to StarClan, she will either go as Cinderheart, or as two separate cats, Cinderheart and Cinderpelt.[18]
  • Kate has stated that Cinderheart does have kits with Lionblaze after the events of The Last Hope.[19]
